This was good I’ve never heard anyone mention overtones. I’m yellow, green and orange sometimes orangey peach 😁More of us need to buy those mixers instead of buying two foundations! For example I would need more orange for Fenty foundation. I would suggest to keep these informative videos coming-too many influencers are just not teaching so we are still doing it all wrong. Thanks!
I'm SO GLAD that I ran into this youtube chanel. I feel like most of the times, influencers do have some tecnics or abilities that makes them good at things like make up, but they really not that experienced when it comes to tecnical language that it is required to explain this kinds of aspects to people.
OMG I actually have such similar skin tone to yours! I struggle with the same problems and find that all foundations look either too orange or too pink. I have very strong green undertone and yellow overtone so I look like a mix of warm and cool, it's kinda hard to tell what it exactly is :/
I just discovered Alexandra Anele and her channel literally today and I already really f***ing LOVE her and her personality! She's so beautiful and her make up skills and all of her knowledge on make up and beauty related subjects are so dope!! Plus she seems like she's proly super chill and down to earth. And she's funny a'f too.
I don’t know if this is going to make sense, but I’ve always wanted someone with your skill set that you have to explain (if there is actually a way) how to wear eyeshadows that may not necessarily complement your skin tone. By means of changing the base/undertone of the eyeshadows 🤷🏼♀️ like a perfect example would be how to wear red eyeshadow with different skin tones, since that’s a really hard one to pull off for most people. I know some of the tricks, but I have a feeling you know more LOL 😉
girl i feel you. And i'm pale as fuck too and makeup people seem to think if you're olive you have medium-dark italianesque skin. No. I'm borderline ghost. But a greeny-yellow ghost. Like if a ghost had an old bruise i would be that colour. But ghost shades on makeup are like chalky pink. Because obviously pale people are all one colour. 🤦♀️
This is awesome, I finally understand undertones/overtones after watching multiple videos, yours really broke it down. Your skin tone is actually very common in light skinned Latinas by the way. My mom, niece and niece's mom have it. I don't know if there are any brands that have addressed this but they should, or someday if you have your own line you can make a foundation for this tone, a lot of Latinas will thank you I'm sure. I'm like green and red and yellow in the winter and a whole different color in the spring and then summer, so I have a hard time finding foundation that doesn't make me look grey, and if I ever do find a great one it gets discontinued. So color correcting it is.
Sooo, I just went and layered a tiny bit of green then orange corrector and a little bit of my NARS concealer over it. I have redness and light and dark spots from hyperpigmentation, and that was the first time I've ever seen any of it covered up so well without looking ashy. Thank youuuuuu!
Please do a tutorial on this makeup look it’s stunning! Trying to color match is nearly impossible for me!🤦🏼♀️ I have an olive undertone, yellow over, but I have a lighter complexion than most people with an olive undertone have. Also my skin is very sensitive so Im always having to correct the redness. Most foundations pull pink on me and if my skin is irritated, forget it! I have my HG foundations, but still playing with color correctors. If you have any suggestions please let me know!
Girl, I feel you! My best recommendation would be Revlon Color Stay Foundation in Buff. It's drugstore so it's affordable but it has great coverage. And if you're like me (sounds like you are), if you mix in a bit of the NYX color correcting liquid in Green, the color will be perfect!
Alexandra Anele Yes, I definitely want to give the NYX color correcting liquid a try! I have a feeling it’s going to do wonders for my complexion! I find Nars foundations match me pretty well, and because my skin tends to get redness, I can go a bit more yellow and it will color correct in a sense once it’s blended. I’m also going to pick up the Revlon foundation, it’s been so hard to finding a drugstore option. Thanks!!👍🏻
Me too,. Light skinned but olive with yellow overtones. Most foundations come up too peachy orange for me. But too green is not flattering either. I am going to use the tip of adding green to my foundation.
Just a note for anyone looking in 2020 - the NYX color correcting liquids have been discontinued. but LA girl has yellow, orange blue and white foundation mixing pigments that you can try (target)
This! It would be great if you compiled a list of foundation shades that are your closest matches you’ve found for the fellow olive undertone/yellow overtone folk
I tested your theory. I bought a blue foundation mixer because when my foundation dries, it darkens and appears very orange. I mixed my foundation with the blue foundation mixer and it stopped the foundation from “oxidizing” and not drying down orange. My foundation actually looked like the shade shown in the bottle. I appreciate your tips so much. From a fellow Olive toned girl 💚
Also, the way you do your lower lash-line eyeshadow and concealer changed my make-up routine--my under-eye circles are not super bad, but I do have pretty deep creases and fine lines in that area just below my lower lash-line. Concealers would always crease and look cakey within seconds of applying them. Then I saw one of your videos where you didn't put concealer all the way up to your lower lash-line, and you smoked it out with shadow instead; you mentioned that you let the natural shape and color of your lower eyelid "help" you create that smokey look, and my mind was blown! I have since tried it out, and my eye structure does very much the same thing. So thanks. You're awesome!
Oh yay! I'm so happy to hear this! It really does make such a difference - people always focus on contouring the face but not enough on contouring the eyes. So glad it worked for you girl!
your makeup, clothes, lighting are perfect in this video. It totally shows up what you are talking about with your skin over and undertones. You look gorgeous! More important is the example for us seeing what color you are. I have watched so many of your videos and heard you tell us that you are olive and fair and I am like "sure I see that" but in this video I totally see it. Great job! I have a hard time like most of us and was told when I was young that my colors should be lilac, pink, blues and it is true. Yellow is the worst thing I could ever wear.
I can’t believe I only found out about you just now... really one of the few who understands what they’re talking about. Thank you for the extremely useful video!
You ROCK! So informative. I am one of those people who has an extraordinarily difficult time color matching foundations. I will use this information to try to modify a bunch of "fails." Wish me luck!
OMG finally someone who understands my skin!! I'm exactly the same and feel that they are always a bit too yellow or orange for me. Please talk more about concealers! Love your videos
Love the fact that no matter what skill level your at with makeup, you can guarantee to learn something or pick up a new skill from you. Wish there was more of that!!!
I'm so glad you're making this video I found out I was olive a couple years ago. Crazy that there is still so few olive foundations out there. Mixing and matching it is!
You're eyes are absolutely bewitching, in the best way imaginable. Gratitude to your practical yet technical elucidation of color theorys influence on foundation. You're a work of art!
I recommend 09 and 07 of "Bare" , by bare minerals. Different colors from different bare minerals foundations lines would be mixing butterscotch and birch.
It absolutely made sense since you put in terms that I could understand especially because you used the color wheel. I had just never heard of undertones and overtones. I saw you using the NYX green in another video. Now I just have to figure what color I need to use to get the perfect color foundation. I have invested in so many foundations is ridiculous. I know I am not a cool tone according to my veins I would be a neutral but with yellow undertones. But when I purchase a warm foundation is orange on me. Then I try neutral and then tend to be gray. Thank you for this video.
Alexandra Anele oh it sure was!!! You actually answered more questions than the Dahm girls at Sephora lol!! Thank you for replying!! Would you maybe check out one of my videos and give me feedback?? I love you!! You’re one of my fave artist!!
Yes! Please continue to do these informational videos, bc I love to share videos like this with my friends kids who are teenagers. This makes it so much easier for me to help explain things to them. Ok, I will stop adding comments over and over now 💋
It’s very reassuring to hear that even YOU don’t always get it your colours blended perfectly right every time and have to compensate with other products (as you mentioned, use a slightly pinker concealer if you’ve mixed too olive, or a more reddish bronzer, etc). Gives me hope...l
Alex you are literally changing my life right now! You are SO knowledgable on the matter & express yourself in a very clear and concise way. Thank you so much! Much love from Berlin
IM SO THANKFUL that I found your channel!! You’re absolutely lovely and we have such a similar skin tone that I’m glowing with glee, thank God someone understands the struggle of light olive skin!! Your tips have helped me tremendously, thank you ❤️
I’m super late to this video. TH-cam just recommended you in my feed, and I’m binging all of your older videos. This is hands down the best explanation I have ever found for skin tone. The painting analogy really helped it click for me. Now I know why I have such a hard time finding foundation. I have a very similar struggle to you in that I’m naturally very fair. Like lighter than the lightest shade fair. However, as you’ve pointed out in other videos, makeup companies seem to think fair skinned people HAVE to be cool toned. Thanks to you, I now know my undertone in a true neutral, but my over tone is yellow as hell. In the winter, my skin looks like translucent cream, with no color cast whatsoever. In the summer I’m still Incredibly pale, but I take on a yellow cast, like parchment paper. Almost all foundations are too pink or peach for me. You’ve inspired me though, and I’ve started mixing. I purchased a white mixer and a yellow mixer for closest foundation match, and I just customize the shade to where I need it to be. I use more of the white mixer in winter and more of the yellow and summer, and lo and behold I have a perfect match. Thanks so much!
❤ wow, that's some great complex thorough explanation. thank you :) also, your makeup situation looks striking and beautiful (especially the eye treatment) in this video. :)
I wish someone had told me this trick earlier, could never use a foundation without looking ashy or orange..ish within like half an hour of applying it. Thank-you, thank you so much. You are a life saver and apparently my celebrity twin in terms of skin tone, it's so difficult being pale olive toned. XOXO
I may have teased you on one of your other videos (all in fun). You are without a doubt the most articulate instructors ever! IM A HUGE FAN. LOVE, L0VE, LOVE your videos. Thank you so much for sharing. And, you are so funny! 👍🏼
Why would anyone give this a thumbs down??? I really don’t understand that at all. This was very very informative regardless if someone already understands this concept. She did an awesome job!
I love watching your videos because you are very thorough and very clear--your explanations always totally make sense to me and make me think about makeup in a different way. I also come from an art background, so when you reference color theory and painting layers, I'm like, "Yes! You're speaking my language! Of course that also applies to makeup!"
Thank you so much for this! I just started getting into makeup, and the first time I just tried to take a guess for my color at the drug store, I looked like a banana. Now I finally know I have more of a neutral undertone.
These videos are very helpful and informative. Keep it up! And thanks for filming your makeup look because I sure was about to ask if you were going to be doing a tutorial for it.
I'm super fascinated by how color works in makeup. Would love a video expressing how/why certain lip and eye colors work best on given skin tones..I haven't figured everyone else's out yet or the exact reasons but I know that for me, cool tones are best, given they are more mutable and dark..
I think I understand what you mean by under tones. I think. It definitely did help when you put it in an artistic point of view. :3 And yes, if you can do a part 2, that would be amazing!
I’ve been subscribed to Alex for over a year, watch her videos religiously and today was my first time watching this one.. I’ve been wearing makeup for 15 years, and today was when I realized I had cool undertones so THANK YOU for clarifying that! although I’m a bit disappointed she didn’t discuss the different overtones and how to know which one you are..? think we can get an update on this video, pretty please? 🙏🏽
This video is really helpful for me! I spent lot of money in foundations for my fair olive skin and I never found the right color! I will try the color corrector for the foundation AND my dark circles!
Same here. I am 50 and I still struggle to get the right shade. I have bought so many foundations and ended up not using them. It is the Bain of my existence.
I am EXACTLY the same light neutral/olive undertones ( I'm Italian, we're olive)...In the winter it is a struggle finding a foundation that matches me perfectly. It all makes sense to me because I'm a painter, but knowing color theory doesn't necessarily make a foundation work. Thanks for mentioning the Nyx correctors, I'll make sure to pick a few ones up and start playing with them. ❤️ And yes further videos on foundation application, would be awesome! Just stumbled on your channel, subscribed, love it!
Not me- I'm full blooded Italian, and I have peach undertones.I always thought I was olive, but neutral foundations look grayish on me.Peach toned foundations blend right into my skin, and look much better.
@@brendalucian6219 one of the things I've discovered since (this comment is a couple of years old) is that interestingly enough the peach foundations work for me too because they neutralize the green in my skin tone. I heard someone say that if you're really pink leaning for instance you should try a warmer foundation (yellower) to neutralize the pink... it all makes sense to me and peach is almost on the opposite spectrum of green in a way. Hope this makes sense.
We are the same skin tone, green and yellow lol, so this is VERY helpful!! Thank you for sharing! I can never find any shades or even any makeup artists online with the same shade. Everything looks yellow or too pale on me lol, and I got tired of trying to decipher which 2 foundations I should mix and gave up makeup overall aside from eyeshadow and eyeliner. 🪞💄🖌 I’m 24 now & decided to try makeup again. 😊
Oh my shit! I totally understand your issue with finding a good foundation or concealer. I’m also olive undertone with yellowish over . Usually people think I’m sick lol I’m not tan right now so I’m really yellowy. Gotta learn more about this ! Thank you so much !
Im sorry… im too distracted to finish watching without saying something. Your hair color make up everything right now are just making your gorgeous green eye GLOW! Like fr fr everything you just did rn is so stunning, definitely a head turner❤️🔥
You're so beautiful! I would love to see a detailed eye tutorial on how to elongate the eye from you. I have the same eye shape as you and I always have such a hard time with that because I can't follow the natural shape of my eye because it is so rounded.
I literally clicked on your video because I thought you had a similar skin tone to mine. I have a warm undertone and yellow overtone as well and it´s just immensely hard to match any foundation, I always end up looking too pink/red/orange on my face, I´m definetly gonna try using the color correcting liquids, you saved my life!!!
This was amazing! I have such a hard time trying to even figure out what my undertone is and you breaking it down in the artistic technical way made so much more sense. I can’t believe this video doesn’t have more views! I’m so glad I found your channel.
Thank you so much this has been very helpful to me because I am a brown person with very blue veins very cool undertone and if I go lighter on my foundation I look ashy but all foundations my color makes me look dirty or grayish like definitely something is wrong so I've actually gone mind entire life thinking I just can't wear makeup even though I love makeup you've changed this for me thanks
Your channel showed up on my feed. I know I’m 3 years late to this party, but I can never find a foundation either. I tend to have beige undertones. Not easy to find.
Love that you bring your art background to makeup. Studied a bit of art back in the day and later a bit of personal color analysis. Are you at all familiar with the makeup artist Way Bandy? He did all the big stars "back in the day." Elizabeth Taylor, etc., and applied a lot of color theory and techniques used by portrait artists. Used to have his '80's book, Designing Your Face. I need to source another copy myself. Sadly, we lost him to AIDS.
Yes to part 2 & 3 so on! Glad you filmed that look I was about to beg. I tend to test foundation out on my chest, if it melts in I know it's my colour. That way I don't look like a bobble head. Great tips, yes to natural light, why they don't put in makeup shops I don't know.
😂 Yes! You need to match your overall shade, not just your face or just your arm. Testing it on your chest is a good strategy. My girl knows what she's doing 😉
Nice video, I d like to see more about color wheel and how you choose the combination of colors when you pick eyeshadows for a look. I find it difficult to choose colors that match...
Awesome video. I especially liked seeing Will Kemp's self portrait as you first example. I just lllllooovvveee his work and tutorials. Even for me, a newbie artist dabbling in paints and relying on color theory for art work, find it hard...no, more like almost impossible to match my foundation. Ugh. Excellent content!
I just had this vid pop up on my feed as I was going through your autoplay. IMHO you are absolutely perfectly colored here...hair, makeup, everything. So blessed, both naturally and artistically!
I’m Sicilian/French Mediterranean, and my undertone is green and my overtone is o r a n g e. When I’m pale in the dead of winter, my face has a wash of ash that makes me look sick. But in the summer, my light tan is olive and dark tan is orange. Finding a foundation that actually matches has been impossible, but I’ll definitely try your mixing tip.
OMG! I'm so glad you did this video! I have yellow/ olive skin too- I literally look green next to other people, yet I am still fair with redness in some areas (looks pretty similar to you). I've always had a horrible time finding a foundation match, now I understand why.... and even better, what to do to fix it! Def going to try the NYX color correctors. I look forward to learning more, please keep these coming!
I'm white AF and always thought I had a cool undertone and yes in natural light my veins are super blue, but cool undertoned foundations turn pink af, while specifically golden undertoned foundations work so much better, yellow doesn't work, orange definitely doesn't work. My closest shade is UD Stay Naked in 10WY and that's how I figured out I'm a pale ass warm undertone, but it was still a touch pink, so I added nyx green concealer and it's perfect. Now I use their 30CG and add an assload of white mixer and it's perfect too. I have to use white and green mixers in every "fair" foundation, but thing is, I think because I'm so fair my undertone/overtone is so so so light that it doesn't change my vein coloring like in people with light skin or darker skin. I found out I'm olive when I turned green/grey AF next to another very fair friend with strong pink undertones, so I'm a pale ass warm olive and trying to figure out what colors look good on me.
It makes complete sense. You did a great job! I do the vein trick as well, and even before the vein trick, I always gravitated towards a neutral undertone, but looking at my veins I clearly have some that are very blue, and others that are a bluish green color. Therefore, I am neutral in color, which has always worked best for me anyway. You have the most beautiful skin tone, and greens and burgundy looks fabulous on you. Love your content so much 💋
This video is so timely for me especially since I have a neutral undertone and most foundations pull orange/warm on me. Btw I loveee your IG makeup pics 😍❤
I’m just pale. I’m like one shade “darker” than John Maclean. Every foundation I try is too orange or yellow and dark. I can make it work by blending it into my neck and using bronzer and the shades are still “porcelain” and “ivory” so they’re still pale just not as pale as I am naturally. I bought these NYX pure white drops to mix into foundations to make them lighter! As much as I would love to be tan, I’m finally ready to embrace my natural shade. I think I’m cool toned? My wrist veins are blueish and if anything I get redness/pinkness. I used to think I’d want the OPPOSITE of the tone I was to balance it out, like a color wheel. Thanks so much for this video! *Edit* OMG I wrote this comment before I heard the whole video and you mentioning the color wheel and NYX products to help correct foundations was amazing! I didn’t know you were going to mention those things but I’m so glad you did
I absolutely love this series. I am learning so much. This is so much better than just a tutorial. Please keep these coming. But
Thank you! So glad the series is proving to be helpful!

Thk you sooo much for going over ever thing about foundation under tones ...your make up looks so nice 👍
I'm literally pink, green, yellow, orange and purple. It's great😎
I wish someone had told me this trick earlier, could never use a foundation without looking ashy or orange..ish within like half an hour of applying it.
😂
So glad you did a foundation video. I’ve been struggling!!
I think I understand what you mean by under tones. I think. It definitely did help when you put it in an artistic point of view. :3
And yes, if you can do a part 2, that would be amazing!
Thanks for the NYX color correctors tip. Very helpful.
I never thought about using those nyx color mixers in my actual foundation. I thought of them more as like spot color correcting. Thanks for the tip!
YES PART 2 PLEASE
This is easily the most helpful video on this topic I've come across. And you're too adorable!
You're so beautiful! I would love to see a detailed eye tutorial on how to elongate the eye from you. I have the same eye shape as you and I always have such a hard time with that because I can't follow the natural shape of my eye because it is so rounded.
Love this idea! Adding it to the list!
Yassss girl!!! I love that you are using your artistic skills 💗💁🏼♀️
😘
I literally clicked on your video because I thought you had a similar skin tone to mine. I have a warm undertone and yellow overtone as well and it´s just immensely hard to match any foundation, I always end up looking too pink/red/orange on my face, I´m definetly gonna try using the color correcting liquids, you saved my life!!!
8:36 my phone got a notification at the same time so seeing that face she made cracked me up 😂😂😂
Loving your MATCHING makeup/shirtt!
😂 This olive girl can't get away from green apparently
This was amazing! I have such a hard time trying to even figure out what my undertone is and you breaking it down in the artistic technical way made so much more sense. I can’t believe this video doesn’t have more views! I’m so glad I found your channel.
Thank you so much this has been very helpful to me because I am a brown person with very blue veins very cool undertone and if I go lighter on my foundation I look ashy but all foundations my color makes me look dirty or grayish like definitely something is wrong so I've actually gone mind entire life thinking I just can't wear makeup even though I love makeup you've changed this for me thanks
Me this whole time -😦. It was making sense as to why color correcting with green is useful to reduce the appearance of redness in the face. Thank you🥺
This is why I could never find a foundation. I’m slightly fairer than you with the same tones. I appreciate this video so much.
I've only seen your newer videos and this popped up on my feed. You look SO DIFFERENT with dark hair! This is like revenge Alexandra.
Love this makeup look only 1 minute into the video and i am mesmerised!!
Nice video, I d like to see more about color wheel and how you choose the combination of colors when you pick eyeshadows for a look. I find it difficult to choose colors that match...
It REALLY made sense. Thanks.
Thank you Elle! So glad this technique helped people understand color theory better! Definitely, even in the art world color is tough!
Thank you! It is a lot of information but is very helpful to look at from an artistic point of view
Great video! Can’t wait for the makeup look 😍 And I would love to see an foundation application video!
I look forward to learning more, please keep these coming!
got it!!! in conclusion =get mixing pigment or corrector
You are amazing and beautiful. I love watching every tutorial and now learning from you. Thank you so much
I can't get over how gorgeous you are. Found you while searching for dark circle remedies
OMG....ammazing explanation!!!😍😍
we need more of these videos...pleease
Hey! That ‘difficult fair-olive’ situation.. check out Kett Cosmetics, and Danessa Myricks Vision Cover cream
please make this a series.💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Learning so much thanks for making this video!!
You are absolutely gorgeous, and I learn so much from your videos. Thank you
I’m just pale.
I didn’t know you were going to mention those things but I’m so glad you did
Dood ! This is the help I needed. Thank you so much , totally makes sense and will make my makeup journey so much easier !
