When the Boxster first came out I took one for a test drive. While it wasn’t particularly fast, it was the most balanced, best handling sports car I’d ever driven! And then my brain immediately flipped into pondering the best way to put more go in that motor.

Many people prefer the Cayman over the 911 for road racing as it handles better due to engine placement. BTW - Comparing the Boxster from the 90's with a 2020's Cayman/Boxster is ridiculous.

    987.1 Boxster S owner here.
1st as an avid attender of PCA official meet-ups. I'm typically out numbered 20:1 on 911 to Boxster ratios. There isn't any sighing going on by the 911 owners. Secondly the same engine issues detailed for the Boxster existed for the 996 and 997 Porsches, so there wasn't any additional stigma to the Boxster due to those issues.
Finally, part of this drama stems from the EU banning cars that don't meet some cybersecurity standard and as such Porsche is killing the line sooner (as detailed by the Smokin Tire review of the Macan EV)
Finally, The 1999 and 2000 996 shares 86% of it's parts from the doors forward with the Boxster ('97-'04)., so there is that.

I'm not one to use terms like triggered, but dang Tyler, you've done it. I'm a guy who owned a 981 Cayman S, a Macan GTS and a 981 GT3. My 981 Cayman S had the same 3.4L engine as 991 911 Carrera. The only Porsches that I recall people objecting to were the 914, which was originally a VW. The 924 and even the 928 which was actually going to replace the 911 until one person at Porsche convinced them otherwise. BTW, I like all the models I just mentioned.
I loved the way the 981 Cayman S handled but at $87k when new, it was expensive. It was a PDK car and I added Soul Performance Street headers paired with the Porsche Sport Exhaust and it sounded glorious. In launch mode, that screaming flat 6 would get anyone's attention.
I've also owned a Lotus Europa, a Lotus Esprit Turbo SE and an Esprit Turb S4 S. We were invited to a Ferrari club drive once and those guys definitely seemed annoyed that we were there. We also did burnouts when leaving the parking area too just as a courtesy.

Absurd, and majorly misinformed video Hoovie. As someone that has owned two previous 911's. (996, and a 997 S manual), and now owns a 981 Cayman S manual, I don't miss my 911's at all. The Cayman is a much more engaging, better balanced, and better sized vehicle to drive. 991's and 992's are too large, and have become more of a rich man's toy to flex. They are less enthusiast oriented. Soon, I will be adding a Cayman GT4 to my stable, and it's not that I can't afford a 991, or a 992, I certainly can, but for what I want, the GT4 is the better drivers car.

Being a lifelong Porschephile and having had/have 911s and Boxsters, I think Porsche is making a grave mistake by abandoning the cheaper car concept; the Boxster, when introduced in '97, was very instrumental in pulling Porsche back from the brink of bankruptcy. Picturing the guys pulling up to the Porsche meet in their "real Porsche" to find a bunch of Boxters reminds me of going to Austin Healey meets with my dad when I was a kid. He had/has a 1967 3000 and the club was initially full of other big Healeys, along with a few Bug Eye Sprites. I vividly remember the first meet we showed up to and saw a pack of Jensens... My dad refused to call them Healeys. Now that I'm older and understand what turds they are I get it, but at the time I didn't understand the snobbery towards them. In reality, I don't have much love for the goofy little Sprites either!

I have had three Cayman's now. Two 987.2 manuals and currently a 981 PDK. I like the Boxster. But generally prefer a MX5 or S2000 for my convertible fix. I personally think the MX5s and S2000 in general look better. The Cayman has been my introduction to Porsche ownership. Which has made me fall in love with the brand and now want to buy a Macan as a daily etc. Same applies with the Hondas and Mazdas. While there is a tonne of money and demand for EVs and SUVs in China. I think as interest rates increase. And people cant stretch their budget as far for luxury cars. I think having more accessible Porsche sports cars should still be a priority to continue to encourage people into the brand.
Motorsport and sports cars are key to Porsche's success and brand identity. Hopefully they continue to have a cheaper ICE or Hybrid Cayman on offer.

Sad that you make these types of comments with zero experience! 😢 The Boxster/Cayman twins were some of the best vehicles that I ever tested while at Motor Trend magazine. Mid-engine has better balance than rear-engine which is likely why the twins ran circles around the 911 through the slalom. Porsche even knew the mid-engine layout was superior which is why they never gave it 911 power until now. SMDH...some of your comments are very bad assumptions!!

Yes, the Porsche Boxster originally did save Porsche people say it was the Cayenne that saved Porsche. They are only half right what really saved Porsche and kept the lights on for them was the Boxster to produce the Cayenne without the Porsche Boxster, we wouldn’t have the Cayenne making Porsche money and we wouldn’t have Porsche as a company which includes the 911 I am the proud owner of an arena Read 1999 Porsche 986 Boxster with a five speed manual. It was my first car that I learned how to drive manual in and my first Porsche. I have no plans on selling it but restoring it, and now hearing this news, go by another one because I love them anyway, but it’s only going to make them more valuable, especially while the first generations are still very cheap for a nice one but just like the Mazda Miata they’re not going to remain cheap for long, especially now with the news that Porsche is going to make the Boxster and Cayman an EV Will they ever rise into 356 or 550 spider prices not anytime soon because they made too many of them, but probably when you and I are along since dead because the Porsche Boxster is basically the next 550 spider as much as the Porsche purists Will never admit that my dad beat one of them as he owned a bunch of 911s he likes the Boxster don’t get me wrong but in his eyes, it’s still a boxster until you drive one which I recommend April to go not even buy one, but just to drive one and experience one or the base model first or second generation they are truly fantastic automobiles The reason why the Boxster has so much hate is because the people who hate it. They never owned one. They won’t hate it if they go out and drive one because they truly are that fantastic of a driving experience especially for the money funny enough I wanted a Mazda Miata before to learn how to drive standard because those are also a fun driving experience but I did learn that we have the Mazda Miata to think for the Porsche Boxsters existence because even all the way back in the late 1980s Porsche was toying around with the idea but that project really did not get jumpstarted until the MX five Miata from Mazda released in the US it came out in 1989 first in Japan and then 1990 in the US and then in 93 Porsche took their idea of a two seat roadster to Geneva as a concept car and then in 96 started production for the UK market and in 97 for the US market with the 986.1 you have the 986.2 which I’m sure is just even more of a blast to drive but instead of pushing the haters away at least for me I would recommend to them go drive one buy one rent one borrow one from a friend, but drive one because they are truly fantastic drive for the money and a wonderful car and a looker at that definitely one of my favorite automobiles I’ve ever driven

Very disappointed in Hoovie. He should know that Porsche #1 was a mid engine as the good doctor intended. The engine was flipped to the rear to enable a backseat for the poorer post WW II Germans. Thus there is nothing more Porsche than the Boxster which is the rightful heir to Porsche #1. Regardless the epitome of Porsche #1 was the Carrera GT.
Very disappointed in Hoovie's lack of knowledge.

The Taycan doesn't need any more range than it has. People who own that car have other cars they use for road trips. If you ever did need to DC fast charge it, its charging curve is quite good and you would get your limited range back quickly.

I’ve known many Boxster owners that go buy a 911, cause people tell them it is the better car, but after a bit they sell the 911 and go back to the Boxster or Cayman. Mid engine is such a better platform.

Dude it totally does make sense, all the “Porsche guys” don’t like Boxsters anyway (some have come around finally) so the Boxster will be a kick ass electric car for the same people who bought Boxsters. What’s the problem

If you are not going to take your car to the track than an enjoyment of a sportscar is handling, rowing the gears and engine noise. Boxsters and Caymans were known for the wonderful sound with that iconic flat six engine. I cannot see their electric versions offering the same enjoyment with their "Dyson Vacuum' electric sound as the substitute for the classic "flat six". The best they can do is to engineer in the fake sound as Hyundai has done with the Ionic 5 N. Still, I think it is a gamble on Porsche's part .

I always wanted a boxster, but now I can afford it I bought a 4 year old, low millage Jaguar F-type. The only reason is the outdated interior on the boxster. It looks so old, I can't stand it

If Porsche can deliver a $60k electric roadster (especially given delays with the Tesla Roadster), I think they will do amazing with it. If it creeps up into the high $70s or low $80s, I think it’s dead in the water.

6 year old me knows that EVs won't work. I can remember playing with my RC cars and for like 10-20 minutes of playtime you had to charge for an hour. I had to get and swap out multiple batteries to have any real fun. The current EV infrastructure doesn't allow you to switch out batteries unless you live in China.

A cheaper electric sports car sounds fun. I never drove too far in my toy cars so I don't see range as an issue. I'd also like Porsche to keep the Cayman as a gas car.

I go over and over it again and I just cannot see how Porsche thinks that dies in the wool Porschefiles are going to go for an electric sportscar with an electric motor noise. I can see it in a luxury car because quietness is one strong characteristic of luxury. Perhaps Porsche is figuring that rich Porsche owners are going to start dying off and newer owners will not remember the sound of that fabulous flat six engine note. I think the used Porsche market for Boxster and Caymans is going to explode.

I'm looking forward to an a/c motor powered Porsche. Lowest center of gravity, instant torque without waiting for things to rev and spool up, that torque remains peaked and constant all the way through it's 15,000rpm range, instant trail braking with regen, precision traction control when desired thats far faster to modulate, and zero drivetrain maintenance. It could instantly be the autocross beast, with nurburgring lap records coming as battery outputs mature. If people miss the noise, they can pipe in all the fake stuff like BMW does. It's exciting to see the performance advantages ahead for the Cayman and Boxster.

This one could be a coin flip, but to give Porsche the benefit of the doubt, this way they won’t have to detune the Boxster to keep it from outperforming the 911, and in the price bracket a smaller, more nimble, convertible Taycan will be able to beat Corvettes off the light, as well as not having to look over their shoulder for a Kia EV running up it’s ass. Also, I would rather have a reliable, fast, fun, 2 seater when having to worry about range, and save the ICE engines for long cargo hauling.

  • @pathoyer5402

This could be a result of Europe’s EV requirements when it comes to EV vs. ICE sales. Each year the percentage of the number of EV sold increases and in 2035 all new vehicles must be zero emissions.

As you might be able to tell from my username, I've owned a few Porsches over the years (and even turned a wrench on them professionally for a while). The worst thing about Porsches is the snotty owners. There's two types of Porsche "enthusiasts", the arrogant ones that will look down on Boxsters, 912s, 914s and 944s, etc. And Porsche guys that love them all ... and those last guys tend to also do their own work whereas the snobs never get their hands dirty. I know who's opinion I respect and who can go f themselves.
