This is very helpful information for the area we live in. I’m a Prepper and have a ton of sandbags to fill hopefully later than sometime soon lol. But I’m seriously impressed with the dirt. Very helpful video thanks. 🤘🏻🤘🏻🖤

I actually filled my walls with sand had to use 3/4 obs way more weight than you'd think but I have a homemade safe room now

A mix of pea gravel and sand is a phenomenal upgrade to just sand. Helps break apart bullets and fine sand fills in airgaps. If you are a baller, they make bullet traps/backstops with small ceramic balls.

I have a “range” I made on my property. I don’t have bags but I definitely piled up the dirt at 25, 50 and 100. Cheap effective way to stop bullets. I’ve seen people use all kinds of stuff. Just make a pile of dirt.

Would be cool to take a sieve to your pile one day

Given no one fills sandbags with sand this conclusion is consistent with observation in the field.

This is something I'd been thinking about. Glad I could find thos test you did... also glad I'm not weird for thinking about it lol. Like you said, dirt is everywhere, especially in the desert where I live but sand... not so much unless I hike to a dried up river bed. Thanks for the video!

It could be an interesting to test the sand wet. I remember stories back in the day where guys said once the sand bags got really wet the AK rounds could get through.

Over there all you got is sand, over here, you got a shit ton more to play with too. Just glad to see that dirt stopped it. Also want to know if concrete will. It might be rocks, but as a bag, I don't think it would.

Nice! Pretty sure the 9mm "failure" was an unintentional fluke. I thought you'd try it again tbh. Another thing with using dirt is that if we were to screen it then I think that would negate any possibility of any air pockets too. Thanks for the video 👍🤘🎯

Why the 9mm went thru the bag of dirt? Its because since the 9mm projectile has a low velocity so the bullet dosen't destroy itself so it stays intact the whole way thru but on the otherhand, like a 556 more than likely it would not go thru the bag of dirt because it has so much velocity it would self destruct before it reached the end.

I think its because he hit near the edge, its too thin there.

The 9mm has more than enough energy to break apart . . The sand is more densely packed . Dirt has less mass

@@SacredHeart0520 i think dirt can be more dense if packed while soft and wet.

Very true for both points. It was looser there so it passed through but 9mm is known to penetrant well also. Tx for the feedback yall it'll help in the future

At 2-3000 fps the kinetic energy converts almost entirely to heat in a lead .223./556. If it strikes ANYTHING solid it will liqufy/vaporize particularly steel/stone/glass, thats why it's such a poor penitrator without modification (steel, copper etc). At the very least it will fragment.
The 9mm round at around 900+ fps will not convert entirely to thermal (lower velocity/kinetic energy but higher mass). A 9mm will penetrate multiple layers of drywall, 20 based caliber at high velocity will not.
Even then the .357 mag (.38 cal) was developed as a penetrator to pierce car doors/windows etc. as criminals at the time had Thompsons (.45 cal).
Interesting when you consider Theodore Rosevelt first armed the police in New York with .32 cal handguns. Because of high crowd density they didn't want anything too penetrating!
