Niko talking about not taking responsibility. I've been stuck alone in my studio apartment for 3 weeks now (EU). My family are high risk people, so haven't seen them even longer. I haven't seen a human being in weeks, aside from a quick grocery drop by friends meters away from me. There are people here bragging in my chat groups about not respecting the rules. And honestly I have a hard time keeping it together some times. Hearing you guys talk about it this way and about the responsibility does give me a sense of not being in it alone. Thank you! (I have it relatively good with stable income and support. I know this is easy sailing compared to some).
I love Niko's perspectives, he really puts care into thought before forming an opinion and the world could use a lot more of that. Btw I love all you guys and you all do that but Niko particularly sparked my attention in this discussion haha
damn, i fucking love u guys. and Niko is knocking my socks off with how utterly intelligent he is, i mean i know hes smart but holy shit the range of topics he has a grasp on is amazing. also i love how wren asks his questions then just sits there with this face of intrigue just taking it all in for pretty much the whole episode.

Watching in May 2021 and reliving all the emotions I was going through that fateful week... "so like after these two weeks we're good right" oh man, I forget how clueless we all were at the beginning. I was in such denial on that Thursday they locked down LA. The whole day customers kept coming in the shop and updating us, being like yeah man they're gonna shut it down down. And I'd be like "no there's no way, that's overreacting" and at the very end of the day the announcement was made, I didn't even have time to properly say goodbye to my boss, I'm still waiting to go back over a year later... I rode the red line home that evening and I was the only one on the whole train except one homeless man. Felt like the apocalypse

Walmart actually has put in several programs like paid leave and bonuses to help people affected by the virus, I work at Walmart, and this may be the first time I have to give them props for helping associates

During this crisis I've been thinking a lot about your AI government episodes and how such a system would have responded to the early data and what immediate action it would have taken vs how our current governments have handled things
Check Person of Interest if you haven't already. That series had concept of AI managing the government from shadows.
On the subject of HL: Alyx and VR, I would def suggest looking into Windows Mixed Reality headsets. They honestly have some of the best price-performance you're gonna get, especially if you buy used etc., I got my first one on Ebay for $125. Additionally, they use inside out tracking, so no sensors to worry about having to mount on your walls.

At my company, the put in thermal scanners at our doors well before things flared up, and it was literally the exact same way to walk into the building as normal with no inconvenience. we can totally get creative to come up with ways to get through this in a smart way. we got this people, be smart and creative! :)
Just got the Oclulus Quest... using it standalone for Beat Saber (for games with simple graphics this is great), connecting it to the PC for HL Alyx. Love the versatility.
For some reason, I really like this video call style. I hope we don't have to wait another month for another episode!

Niko, Italy’s death ratio is so high not because we can’t handle so many people at the hospital ( we are almost getting there, but not quite yet), but because the age average is so much higher than in other countries. That’s why more people die, the death age average here is 81 years old, which is pretty damn high

Niko brought up an interesting point in regards to tracing people who have been exposed to someone else with COVID-19. As beneficial as that might be for the good of everyone, what scares me is that CDC in my area literally is doing nothing of the sort in regards to a bridge club tournament at a casino that just happened in the area that exposed over 100 individuals to COVID-19. The casino had a list of everyone in the club that was ready to be given to the CDC when they called about the incident. The CDC never called at all and so who knows if anyone in the exposed group is quarantining at all. It's a clusterf*** here

For example New Zealands PM, Jacinda Arden is vocal to her country, and is taking proactive steps to make sure the people come first. Thats a leader i can follow despite things i disagree with her on.
I think governor Andrew Cuomo is a fantastic leader during this time. If he ran for president I would vote for him.
After listening to the Podcast I told my parents about the ironic fact that people rationalize the situation as soon as the number of deaths goes in the 2-digit-thousands.
My father responded to that by telling me a saying: "One death is tragic. 20 are a Horror Story. 1000 are statistics." Thought that was pretty fitting.
I'd be really interested to hear everyone's thoughts, particularly Niko and Jake's, about what we're doing in New Zealand right now - total 4 week shut down, everyone is quarantined aside from people who work in essential areas i.e supermarkets/food supply, law enforcement, journalism, medical, and the government has set up a large fund to help businesses pay their employees 80% of what they normally are paid during the forced lock down. I wonder how that would work in America though, seeing as America is so much bigger than New Zealand (NZ has approx. 4.8 million to California's approx. 40 million) as well as America being separated/governed differently within each state.

It's really interesting to hear how diferent places are reacting to the virus. For example, Everything non esential in Norway has been closed by the goverment, and we are for the first time spending a lot of money from the Oil Fund to help private citysens and buisnises. And on the other hand just a few killometers away, Sweden is continuing buisnes as usual with the intention of getting people sick to build up a mass imunity. And that is really interesting how two nations that are very simmilar react with polar oposits. (sorry for my horible english spelling)

25:00 about the outrage-culture - I somewhat agree, but I would add that at times of less significant threats, less worries about actual survival people might find the time and energy to fight "smaller" issues like white washing in Hollywood or the use of certain words by certain people etc. I would not discourage these discussions, they a necessary and important - and we are often lucky to live in a society where we *can* worry about those things.

It's so interesting how many different ways people can deal with it. Specially considering distinct cultural backgrounds.
To me it is difficult to see any prospect of success dealing with this crisis withought emphatic action from federel goverment. But that's the point. In Brazil, this is the only institution with the money and reach to garantee that the entire population is assisted.
The first attitude around here were taken by the city, than the state, and now after people's pressure... the Union is acting, out of Health Ministery (they've been doing a good job).
Here we are seeing the mismatch between polical and executive classes.
How do you guys see it over there? Or that isn't a problem?
I noticed a strong lean towards individual responsibility aswell institutions out of Goverment.

Is it just me or is this video way quieter than usual
Let me start off by saying this is in no way a post to get likes or attention. I just want people to think. The first part of this video really hurts me honestly. Not because I dont believe it, but because I know it could come to a lot of those extremes. Ive dealt with cancer for 3 years. Im only 21. I have have a lot more life to live I hope. My immune system is gone, and its really not ever going to get better until I can get a bone marrow transplant.
If I can even find a match. My dad is a half match, so hes not guaranteed to work. Finding someone outside of the country with all of this bullshit going on, thats impossible. Thing is is im not even eligible for the transplant yet. Im currently in the hospital for 4 weeks getting treatment and blood transfusions. If the healthcare system collapses im going to die. If it doesnt I still have to ride this out by the skin of my teeth until i can get a transplant. If I do get the transplant then its 6 months to a year for full recovery. Where I'll have to be home and barely see anyone except my parents.
So my chances are very very very low. At least they seem that way. I hate sympathy posts like this but from the first bit I watched I never heard you guys mention cancer patients. Please keep us in your thoughts and prayers. Do not forget us. Some of us have been fighting far to long to be wiped out by this stupid virus. People need to take it seriously.
At the same time, I dont wanna think about dying. Ive already had to think about it for years, but now its even more real. And theres just so much shit and suffering in the world its hard to have any hope with where im at and so many other people like me. Our world is already ending. SO. We need you guys laughter and jokes. I need it. I know you want to keep people educated on this horrible thing. But maybe dont talk about everything that could go wrong. People are depressed and suicidal too. I hate to say it but I just feel like it needs to be in the back of peoples heads who do podcasts. Im all for freedom of speech. But words can be powerful sometimes.
Lets talk about how we can kick this things ass. Lets educate people but with hope and encouragement, not fear. I know its scary. Trust me I know. But we have to hold each other and find the beautiful moments of life during all this. All of this to say...

And I hope these are just things people can keep in mind. Im not shaming anyone. I just want people to know theres so many people suffering in more ways than one.
