Another interesting fact is no one has ever died in the Airbus A340 accidents or incidents
Emirates flight 407 was due to pilot error, they miscalculated their takeoff data with an MTOW that was 100 tonnes below the real weight. They also extended the flaps 10° to little and only applied FLX thrust when they should have used TO/GA
The reason that this aircraft is so underpowered comes to this: for a long time, aircraft that needed to fly really long distances over the ocean or over really desolate areas needed to have at least three or four engines so if one failed, they could make it to another airport safely. Airbus decided to slap some underpowered engines on the a340 early versions, but the later versions have some more powerful engines.
I flew the a340-300 abt 6 times and it was my first plane. Due to the small engines its verry quietand the slow climb is also relaxing. Its the sleepy bus but the comfortable bus. And when an engine dies, you could continue the flight.
I remember when Airfrance had operations to Bogotá Colombia with the A340-300, OMG that airplane used all the 3800mts of runway to take off and had so much performance issues to gain altitude. Iberia used the 340-600 and still suffered but not as much as the Airfrance 340.

@@DivisonLol It is a bit of a race car really, and a shame Boeing didn't pursue a New Midsize Aeroplane to replace it. As a result the A321 XLR is a serious competitor. Boeing needs an airliner that sits between the 737 and 777, or should look into upgrading the 757 again.

I cant help but feel bad for the a340 lineup as a whole. Airbus screwed up the first models, and the better -500/-600 models got a bad reputation from the previous models, even if they are great planes.
The A340 of the Flugbereitschaft is not a government plane; it's purely Luftwaffe but is USED to carry VIP's and politicians. But still not government plane.
Being the 330 and the 340 build at the same time I just wonder why the just didn't fit the RR trent 700 engines to the 340... I understand that for structural limitations of the wings maybe they need to perform some modifications but comeon, the 320 engines? 😅
I think it was a situation where they had already poured too much development resources into it and IAE didn’t come through with their SuperFan as Airbus had thought they would so they were just kinda forced to launch with what they had. Even if it wasn’t a very good plane lol
IAE was in the process of designing a SuperFan variant of the V2500 called the V2500SF for Airbus for this model of the A340. It would’ve been a more powerful, geared turbofan version of the V2500. But IAE cancelled the development last minute and Airbus was stuck with CFM being the sole supplier.
