The A340-200 and-300 were originally meant to be powered by a new geared turbofan engine, the IAE Superfan, but IAE cancelled production of the engine. So Airbus decided to use whatever engine they could find that would fit , the CFM 56. The -500 and -600 variants received the more powerful RR Trent 500.
They could have used the engines of the 757, but to compete against the Boeing 777 they had to save on costs so they went to the A320 parts bin to get the engines and help reduce maintenance costs with the commonality. The A340 still ended up being too costly despite this measure.
@gteixeira It wasn't matinence costs so much as it was about fuel efficiency. The IAE superfan was supposed to be revolutionary, producing good amounts of thrust with never seen before efficiency. The problem was that IAE couldn't get the technology for the geared turbofan right, and in fact, it wouldn't be developed for another 20+ years by Pratt & Whitney. Airbus' whole marketing idea with the A340 was for it to be an extremely efficient quad jet, so when IAE gave up on the superfan, Airbus needed to find something that matched the fuel efficiency they had been planning for and advertising, the only engine that fit that bill was the CFM-56. It certainly did have the added benefit of commonality with the A320, but the main reason was for fuel efficiency.
They may be underpowered. (200 and 300) But inflight. The endurance of the plane in range makes up for it. It would help if your flaps where set accordingly. Which I am sure the 200/300 has a different flap setting compared to the 500/600.
I'll never forget my first time flying on a 777, walking down the steps at Grantley Adams into a wall of heat, and seeing up close the enormous engines that just flew us there from the UK. Impressive
2 out of 4 of those ge-90s should be the backup engine instead of using all of them, since 2 of those are already enough to make the Boeing triple seven to airborne
Looks like you built a euro-b52. When you gotta get an entire elphant walk of intercontinential bombers in the air before the nukes destroy them on the ground... all that power will come in handy.
I have only been on one A340 in my life (MAN - LAS) a few years ago and I was excited for it which soon changed to concern that we weren't actually going to get off the runway. I thought it had to be broken with how slowly it going moving.

Can do you one better with that. The Trent 97 from the A350-1000 would also suffice in a tri-jet configuration A380. The Trent-97, while less powerful than the GE-9X, its a fair amount more efficient, and is still powerful enough to produce more thrust in a tri-jet configuration on the A380, than it currently is in a quad jet configuration currently. The A380 uses 4 Trent 900s, which produce a combined thrust of 280,000lbs 3 Trent 97s would produce 291,000lbs of thrust, 11,000lbs more, all while being roughly 35% more efficient than the current A380. The A380 in this hypothetical tri-jet configuration would boast significantly improved efficiency, as well better take-off, and landing performance. Unfortunately though, while creating this hypothetical tri-jet A380 has some massive benefits, it'd be more trouble than its worth. The third engine would necessitate a complete redesign of the A380's tail, and due to the complete change of weight an balance due to this third engine, much of the aircrafts internal structure would have to be completely redone to compensate for the aircrafts altered center of mass. It'd likely cost Airbus way more money than they're willing to spend to redesign the A380 in this way, since, even with all of the massive benefits this aircraft would have over its predecessor, it still probably wouldn't sell well enough for it to be worth it.
You didn't even use the most powerful GE90 variant ever produced, the GE90-115b. That one can do 115,000 pounds of thrust. Across four engines it would add an extra 60,000 pound of thrust. (Which is about half of the thrust the plane had with its original engines.)

the a340 was always meant to use the cfm 56, but airbus was open to other engines
@@iamr4mi The Superfan was proposed first, before it was canceled. The CFM56 was an afterthought in the end.
30 years later also known as PW1100 xD

I now want an A320 with the GE90s....
same too but with the 737 and the embraer E175
Cessna 172 with GE90
Piper Cub with GE90
Only one GE90 can to this. (Seriously, 2 GE90 been overpowered to A320, soo can use only 1 GE90 for this plane.)
A true neo

I’ve had a long weekend and our flight got cancelled, i guess there is nothing like watching swiss on a long road trip back home.
Next video: Turning the Cessna 152 into a rocket
that sounds like a great idea

i was working for Lufthansa on the A340-300 and every time we went dpwn Runway 18 in Frankfurt, it felt like forever. We call it plane with 5 APUs
This was originally the main concept for the a340 except it would have 2 engines

interesting , didn't know the a340 is quite underpowered

Fun fact: the 777’s big engines give it a cruising speed of Mach 0.84.
Try it with 2 of those giant engines, it might be a little more realistic.

I like how you put the ad with the "remove befor flight sticker" before you actually took off.

Airbus should make a remake of A340 as a -900 one that has these engies.
So basically, the A350. They have no reason to do that when the A350 exists
finally! a really efficient A340!
Very nice. Do it with 4 Rolls Royce Olympus now.
Next, you should do this to the A380.

New to flight sim, what software are you using to edit the plane engines?
The Remove before Flight keytag actually looks really interesting
swiss could you add ge90’s to the 737 or 757 please

The physics on the X-Works are really poor and its just a reskin for the A330
what game is this

How about putting those GE90/XWB Engines on an A380?
love your vids swiss
Now A340 is OVERPOWERED.
I’m an aerospace tooling engineer and worked several parts of the GE9X engine
You didn't even use the most powerful GE90 variant ever produced, the GE90-115b. That one can do 115,000 pounds of thrust. Across four engines it would add an extra 60,000 pound of thrust. (Which is about half of the thrust the plane had with its original engines.)
Good video swiss!
