What amazes me when rewatching speeches such as this is that back then, as a young adult, when racism was, truthfully, acceptable to so many of us, is that I never heard his words. Watching this now, I am so amazed by him and his words. It takes a long time to outgrow all the ignorances taught to us in our childhood. It is a never-ending battle, but we should never give up the fight. I love this speech!

Jesse came to my school a few years after this and I had to really struggle not to cry during his speech, his anaphora "they work everyday" and "I understand" is so moving... I was cheering my laptop when he roared "No, NO NO, they're not lazy and someone must defend them because it's right and because they cant speak for themselves." Arguably the most caring and progressive content of any politicians speech, give him credit!

This (and Cuomo's speech in 84) is how you give a convention speech. It builds and builds to a crescendo. From the Church. No need to shout until the end. Andrew Cuomo's speech tonight had great content, but you don't shout all the time. Build it up. Climax. Has me in tears every time (and I'm white by the way).

JESSE JACKSON - 1988 DNC Speech!
"I understand. You see me on TV, but you don't know the me that makes me, me. They wonder, "Why does Jesse run?" because they see me running for the White House. They don't see the house I'm running from.
I have a story. I wasn't always on television. Writers were not always outside my door. When I was born late one afternoon, October 8th, in Greenville, South Carolina, no writers asked my mother her name. Nobody chose to write down our ad
dress. My mama was not supposed to make it, and I was not supposed to make it. You see, I was born of a teen-age mother, who was born of a teen-age mother.
I understand. I know abandonment, and people being mean to you, and saying you're nothing and nobody and can never be anything.
I understand. Jesse Jackson is my third name. I'm adopted. When I had no name, my grandmother gave me her name. My name was Jesse Burns 'til I was 12. So I wouldn't have a blank space, she gave me a name to hold me over. I understand when nobody knows your name. I understand when you have no name.
I understand. I wasn't born in the hospital. Mama didn't have insurance. I was born in the bed at [the] house. I really do understand. Born in a three-room house, bathroom in the backyard, slop jar by the bed, no hot and cold running water. I understand. Wallpaper used for decoration? No. For a windbreaker. I understand. I'm a working person's person. That's why I understand you whether you're Black or White. I understand work. I was not born with a silver spoon in my mouth. I had a shovel programmed for my hand.
My mother, a working woman. So many of the days she went to work early, with runs in her stockings. She knew better, but she wore runs in her stockings so that my brother and I could have matching socks and not be laughed at at school. I understand.
At 3 o'clock on Thanksgiving Day, we couldn't eat turkey because momma was preparing somebody else's turkey at 3 o'clock. We had to play football to entertain ourselves. And then around 6 o'clock she would get off the Alta Vista bus and we would bring up the leftovers and eat our turkey -- leftovers, the carcass, the cranberries -- around 8 o'clock at night. I really do understand.
Every one of these funny labels they put on you, those of you who are watching this broadcast tonight in the projects, on the corners, I understand. Call you outcast, low down, you can't make it, you're nothing, you're from nobody, subclass, underclass; when you see Jesse Jackson, when my name goes in nomination, your name goes in nomination.
I was born in the slum, but the slum was not born in me. And it wasn't born in you, and you can make it.
Wherever you are tonight, you can make it. Hold your head high; stick your chest out. You can make it. It gets dark sometimes, but the morning comes. Don't you surrender!
Suffering breeds character, character breeds faith. In the end faith will not disappoint.
You must not surrender! You may or may not get there but just know that you're qualified! And you hold on, and hold out! We must never surrender!! America will get better and better."

Imagine you helped beat the Nazis and when you came home the black GIs exited the boat on a segregated ramp and road in segregated trains and your German-American fellow Americans could vote and go downtown and get a job.
Draw on your experience as a businessman, imagine the government systematically discriminated against you in every aspect of your business from where you could buy or rent a shop to discriminatory loan practices to unfair building code enforcement to inadequate garbage pick-up and policing etc

Well +Jeff L as a white guy who is not wholly oblivious to the ongoing history of race and racism in America I wish white folks like you would both learn something about this ongoing history and develop their emotional maturity so you could empathize.
Do you understand what this means?
It means learn about the countless awful things systematically done to black folks through slavery and Southern style Apartheid and the how the remnants of this rank racism combines with more nuanced contemporary racism to produce higher unemployment rates, inferior education, poorer health care, unfair outcomes with police and courts, unfair housing patterns.
And it means spend some time imagining yourself into a black mans shoes who for example saw his grandparents treated like shit and heard family stories about how much worse it was for his great-grandparents, and who sees he has the odds against him in every facet of life AND knows that folks like you want to ignore these legitimate concerns and ludicrously chastize him not to ever foreground racism but always to submerge these concerns that are central to his life and instead only proudly talk about being an American as if Americans are a homogeneous group, as if blacks are treated fairly today or ever were in the past.

this is a bad-ass speech that rocks the shame of america in the 80's...remeber the contra trial with oliver north, the drug trade, and the high employment. plus, a lot of racial practices with a darken "o" on the application. keep hope alive...obama needs to study this...

I'm getting mixed signals on his drug policy opinion here...does anyone know what exactly it was then and if it has changed since? His "no first use" bit sounds a tad too "zero tolerance" for my liking.

Jesse's favorite book is "The Art of the Drive-By Shooting", co-written by south central L.A.'s very own: Rufus "Zigaboo" Zimbabwe and Leroy "I'm A Bad Man" Brown.
