Love the list and happy to have you back! Will be checking out many of these. I know it’s a bit basic, but I was really surprised to not see Magdalena Bay on the list, that one’s my #1 of the year. Some of the catchiest hooks, most beautifully orchestrated instrumentals with gorgeous harmonies, plus these proggy elements throughout that kind of catch you off guard in the best way right when you start to get used to the bright, glittering synth pop. Would love to know your thoughts on it!
I came here to say the same thing! Imaginal Disk is one of the best blends of quality synth pop and otherworldly psychedelic production I have ever heard.
I thought it was a cool record, but it just didn’t hit for me in the same way Mercurial World did. It was tough to do a list this year, there’s just been too many gems
So glad that you're back. I've got into your videos around a year ago, and thought the channel has gone frozen already. You're one of my fav music critic.
YES I almost screamed when I saw your number 1 pick, it's such a great and amazing album that's been flying under the radar of a lot of people and I hope this gives it more listeners. It's as unique as it gets, and yet despite its weirdness it's poignant in how it captures grief and suffering. Vida Blue is something special. And great list overall! A few artists I thought were gonna make your cut where Magdalena Bay, Cindy Lee, Chat Pile, Mount Eerie and Nicolas Jaar, but I really agree with most of your choices and excited to listen to the ones I didn't know before. What a great year of music it's been, glad to have you back even for just one list :)
did not expect the first pick on this list to be that new Bibio thing that just came out, I was almost gonna skip that one thanks to my not thinking the first Phantom Brickworks had enough to it to really merit a sequel, but you convinced me to check it out anyway and it turned out to be a fair bit better than the first! thanks for that always happy to see you upload anytime
So happy to see this popping up in my feed man, you have no idea. I have albums from other aoty lists you did that I listen to regularly. Thank you! EDIT: I would add 2 of my personal favorites: Julia Holter - Something In The Room She Moves Oranssi Pazuzu - Muuntautuja
Great to see another video from you! Somehow completely missed there was a new Thou album this year; now that I live in New Orleans, I feel like they're essential listening. My heart was with the Magdalena Bay, Adrianne Lenker, and Cindy Lee albums this year, surprised to see none of them on your list!
Those are literally my top 3 for the year! Didn't think I'd see them all here but thought one of them would pop up. Happy to see xiu xiu crack the top 10 though!
lived in New Orleans for a long time and loved seeing Thou there. different genres, but take any chance you can to see Slowhole and Julie Odell locally!
Thanks Nic! Oh man I genuinely did enjoy Imagjnal Disk and Diamond Jubilee, but there was lots I had to omit off the list this year - blame all these brilliant artists for releasing too much good stuff
Glad to see you back. My faves which weren't mentioned are Moor Mother, The Body/Dis Fig, Chelsea Wolfe, Sugar Horse, Los Campesinos!, Eros, Keeley Forsyth, Clinic Stars, and Mount Eerie
Welcome back Oliver, 2024 has been a great year for music, here are my favourites. Future Islands- People who aren't there anymore Real Estate- Daniel Jane Weaver- Love in constant spectacle The Decemberists- As it ever was, so it will be again Philip Wilkerson- Whenever now finds you Roman Angelos- Tropical Nites Warriors of the dystotheque- Its a beautiful thing Markus Guentner- Kontrapunkt Nick Cave and the bad seeds- Wild God The Soundcarriers- Through other reflections Julia Holter- Something in the room she moves Ride- Interplay The High Llamas- Hey Panda Public Service Broadcasting- The Last Flight Phosphorescent- Revelator Pye Corner Audio- The Endless Echo
A fantastic list and wonderful to have you back. The Beth Gibbons record has been a highlight for me in particular, such a beautiful and somber album. I’m surprised that Magdalena Bay’s Imaginal Disk isn’t on here though, or Marika Hackman’s Big Sigh. Those have been absolute standouts in a year awash with fantastic releases!
So happy to see Mamaleek taking the top spot here, my favourite active band and my album of the year. Funnily enough, in your last AOTY video, from 2022, I actually recommended their last record "Diner Coffee", another superb album, so I have to say I'm quite pleased to see them top your list this year.
Great to see you back! You've helped me to discover many a new artist via these year-end videos, I am looking forward to checking out some of your top 20. I usually run a year or two behind in checking out new music, but of the albums I've purchased, here are my top 6 (for what it's worth): Thanks! 1. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Wild God 2. Future Islands - People Who Aren't There Anymore 3. Michael Kiwanuka - Small Changes 4. Tindersticks - Soft Tissue 5. The WAEVE - City Lights 6. The Smile - Wall of Eyes
@@RatchetSly Nice! It's great to hear from another fan. Future Islands are such an underrated band. I had the pleasure of seeing them in concert this year and, much like Oliver said about Nick Cave's "Wild God", you form a much deeper appreciation for their works when you see them performed live.
Vida Blue is absolutely phenomenal! I'm glad to see it getting some love, especially from the GOAT. I went back and listened to all their stuff after Vida Blue, and feel in love with Diner Coffee and especially Come and See. Was curious how you felt on the new Jlin album? I remember revisiting Black Origami after it was on your year-end list, and it has become one of my all-time favs, and Akoma is super, super cool as well! Awesome to see a video from you, man!
always a treat to listen to you speaking about music, oliver. i can always count on you to find something i hadn't heard of before, in this case your no. 1 spot. i agree that this year was the gift that kept on giving and the 2016 comparison feels apt. hoping 2025 is also a good year for you and for music!
TH-cam’s best creator is back for his yearly visit. Just wanted to say your Fugazi video last year got me into the band, and their music defined the last year of my life. Great video and I can’t wait to check out some of these I hadn’t heard of.
What a nice surprise, welcome back and thank you for your list. Children of the moon by State Faults is my aoty. I really enjoyed Autechre‘s Lyon set too.
Amazing mix of records I agree are great (Fontaines, Charli, Blood Incantation) and quite a few I haven't heard but I'm gonna check out for sure! Especially happy to see some love for Kelly Moran! Your commentary is always so wonderful and unique in its perspective
saw mamaleek open for chat pile this novemeber and I have been absolutely transfixed by them ever since. their vocals have so much more impact live than they do in the studio, which is definitely saying something. amazing stuff and I hope that vida blues success means more music to come. I've heard whispers of a headlining tour as well, which I will absolutely see if they come near my area
So pleasing to see your top not being trying to be echoing only the most highlighted albums or oppositely, trying to avoid putting mainstream albums on the list, but being a pure personal top, explained with your words and feelings. Your channel as always been a great place to discover, learn, discuss, argue around music in the best way possible. I hope we'll keep you sharing about music. Your work is awesome. Have a great holiday time
I couldn't help but smile genuinely when I saw this video was out. I really appreciate the way you talk about music; I see so much passion in your words. I'm glad you found the time and drive to share another video with the world. Thank you also for the recommendations. Wishing you a great end of the year, and see you next year, perhaps!
That mamaleek record I listened to and didn’t find much in and so didn’t really come back to. After hearing your take and relistening I totally get you, great record
Hey Oliver, just wanted to say Deep Cuts has been a huge inspiration for me. I started my channel a few years ago because of yours so it’s always fantastic to see a new video from you. Hope you have a good holiday
Welcome back Oliver! And thank you! Always love your AOTY lists. I am actually curious about why nothing by The Smile, mostly because it sounded like it was on the tip of your tongue to discuss. So I will just ask directly. Why neither of the 2 albums by The Smile?
Adrianne Lenker, Vampire Weekend, Magdalena Bay, and especially Mount Eerie gotta be on the list for me. But I also just haven't been listening to too much music released this year. I'd only heard 4 of the albums listed here! There's just an infinite amount of stuff from decades past I haven't heard yet.
The beautiful thing to me about this list is it shows that you can be a year into your music career or 50 years into it and still have the capacity to produce beautiful, inventive, exciting new music
Yess!! First time I comment here, but you’re the one who made me discover Really From, which I never got bored of. So I’ll watch this with great interest :).
woah nth gets me excised as finally seeing deep cuts notification, I was waiting for this to catch up, as it has been my worst year listening to music, with the genocide in Gaza
Definitely surprised to see Mamaleek at #1, as I just learned of them this year since they opened for the Have a Nice Life concert in Seattle. Great show all around!
Glad you're back!! loved the list, I loved Quadeca, Geordie Greep, and Cindy Lee this year. I would've guessed the latter two would get a spot, I wonder how you liked Diamond Jubilee

That Naima Bock albums is a great shout! I listened to “Gentle” this year and thought it was a wonderful song. Definitely need to check out the full project it seems.
I spent weeks coming back to your channel in January this year - waiting for your best of 2023 list. Sooooo glad to have you back... streaming all the albums already....😊
deep cuts drops after two years, and on my birthday?!? also really happy to see Mamaleek top your list! (it'll likely be #2 on mine after SUMAC's The Healer). having experienced a lot of grief myself this year, Vida Blue has been a profoundly moving source of companionship and i love it dearly 💕 excited to check out the ones i haven't from your list!
Getting the notification for this video made me so excited, I was just recently telling myself that there probably wouldn't be one for this year either. Excited to have a listen to the ones I haven't heard yet.
I am so happy you're back! Definitely the most awaited aoty list of the year. My list would include: Still House Plants - if I don't make it, I love u (math rock/experimental) Crizin da Z.O. - Acelero (electronic/brazilian funk/deconstructed club) Amaro Freitas - Y'Y (jazz/ambient/afro-brazillian traditional music) samlrc - A Lonely Sinner (post-rock) 9T Antiope - Horror Vacui (avant-folk/electronic)
J from Glass Beach actually uses she/her pronouns. Great list though!!
Good to know, thanks for correcting! Have pinned
She/Her actually!

Yea I want a Chat Pile Cool World review. That album ruled.
Chat Pile's Cool World is without any doubt AOTY for me. A list of 20 albums and it NOT being on there is not comprehensible.

Glad you're back!! loved the list, I loved Quadeca, Geordie Greep, and Cindy Lee this year. I would've guessed the latter two would get a spot, I wonder how you liked Diamond Jubilee

also really happy to see Mamaleek top your list! (it'll likely be #2 on mine after SUMAC's The Healer). having experienced a lot of grief myself this year, Vida Blue has been a profoundly moving source of companionship and i love it dearly 💕
