    As a Welsh speaker it's really nice to see Benjamin Zephaniah challenge the idea that English is the only language in the UK. "Britishness" is too often viewed as some ubiquitous Englishness. The idea that the monarchy for example is something special is also a joke. The English monarchy spent centuries oppressing the Welsh and now we have to put up with Charles swanning around claiming he's the Prince of Wales.

    11:56 that is why I don't think we should promote a British identity: it makes people act like that, where if the Queen is insulted, you suddenly should be ashamed to call yourself British. "That's our Queen!"
    This is the danger of nationalism, it can start off looking pretty good because it unifies people until someone steps out of the national identity, then they are 'not British' and suddenly seen as the enemy. Then we can restrict their freedoms because they are no longer one of us. A perfect example of the 'us and them' dynamic.
    I don't think people should be encouraged to live separately, I think people should be encouraged to live together without needing to unify under one identity. It may be idealistic, but if you're going to encourage something, surely that is preferable to national pride.
    National pride is a dangerous thing, just look at history.

      Howard D. Thompson Cousin-marriage leads to genetic defects and mental instability. In some parts of the world it's also a common practice. Maybe you want to live alongside those people because you're a "citizen of the world" but I sure don't.

    • @Mr-pz5cb
      @Mr-pz5cb 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      accidentalprotégé haha what? Of all the examples of people not to live alongside you went for people who marry their cousins?! Bad example.
      But as for people you don't want to live alongside, you don't have to. I'm not even sure I would encourage everyone to live alongside, mainly because it simply wouldn't work, but there's a middle ground between living alongside everyone and living as a proud British person. Live in countries, call that country Britain, but why do we have to be proud of it? I don't understand that. I understand why people are proud but not why they should be.

    • @humanrays
      @humanrays 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Howard D. Thompson Because even if it isn't "logical" to be proud of the place you're born in, it's still better than the alternative. Japan hasn't had 1400 of their children raped by foreigners.

    • @Mr-pz5cb
      @Mr-pz5cb 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      accidentalprotégé once again strange example, what does that have to do with anything? Border controls and being proud of your country are two separate issues, they may have links but they are not the same. I could say "tighten the borders" (which I wouldn't but anyway) and I wouldn't have to be proud of my country.

    • @humanrays
      @humanrays 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not talking about border control. The Japanese ~are~ proud of their country. Some Japanese schoolteachers were even sacked for saying that pupils didn't have to sing the national anthem.

    Promoting cultural identity is often vague. Sometimes the best way to promote a culture is to actually satire it; The Simpson's is a perfect example of how far American culture can reach a wide audience by satire.

    in which year did the British Government legislate for Britain to be a multicultural community? Which cultures of the world are equal to the legislated British cultures of English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish in Britain today. Peoples of the world rejected their Nationality of birth and culture to adopt one of the 4 legislated cultures of Britain to integrate into the united legislated British identity as an equality for all..

    Seriously, maybe you have to be an outsider to see the absurdity of this dialogue. I'm a Kiwi, I've lived in Australia for 12 years and have Australian citizenship but my friends and family still consider me a Kiwi. That's because if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck chances are it's a duck. I know what a British identity is - just the same as people assume my husband is going to drink a lot of beer when we travel because he's Australian - bit stereotypical but we are totally proud of our origins. If these people don't know what a British person is then chances are they are not British and just have personal insecurities about their own identities. They need to look inwards instead of telling others what they are!! Viva la Mary Poppins!!

    Didn't even need a apology off the man who said "Sunshine" just any white person saying "Sorry" (Like the host) would release the endorphin he needs to settle down. So accustom these people have become to get in high places, through nothing more than being apologized to, that they just don't care where the apology comes from, as long as they are white and are saying "Sorry" they feel content. I have been called sunshine many times, but only real racist will find race issues in that word...do you know (In British culture) the word sunshine is used when you piss someone off be what they say or what actions they do. The old man used it in the right context, but Ben tried to turn it into race. Oh how they love apology.

    • @Gobbygiblet
      @Gobbygiblet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      it wasn't about race, he was mad because it is patronising and insulting when used in a certain context. If Benjamin took it in a racist way, he would've said so.

    • @BunWackettBuzzard
      @BunWackettBuzzard 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gobbygiblet Then he would of just left it alone instead of getting upset about it and pleading to everyone about his offence. This guy is pathetic. Soon calmed down when he got an apology from the host, any apology would do for him, must of release endorphin's or something.

    • @Gobbygiblet
      @Gobbygiblet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      BunWackettBuzzard Think about it though, he was deemed by that ignorant old fool "less British" because he didn't agree with having a monarchy. I don't believe in having a monarchy either, so according to that man I'd be classified as "less British" as well! I can understand why Benjamin would be upset in this instance, I can't speak for other things he may or may not of said and done, but in this case I think his anger and upset is justified.

    • @BunWackettBuzzard
      @BunWackettBuzzard 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gobbygiblet
      He said nothing of being "Less British" This Ben, seems to think British culture started post 1950, when really it is over 1000 year in the making. Also This Ben talks about "Look at the bowler hat, that was considered British at one time" as if it was making a point...OK Ben, look at the dreadlocks, they used to be considered Jamaican at one...wait, oh, you wear them...so, you can keep your ancestors culture, but refuse to accept the native people of Britain has their's. The man is an imbecile who knows nothing of this Island.

    • @Gobbygiblet
      @Gobbygiblet 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      BunWackettBuzzard I've just rewatched this video and the old man did say he was "less British" for not believing in the Monarchy. So shame on that guy.
      Dreadlocks didn't originate from Jamaica, it came from various areas in Africa, Tibetan Ngagpas wore them, Hindu Sadhus commonly dreadlocked their hair, Sufi Rafaees, Malangs and Fakirs in Pakistan also dread their hair, Even Spartan Warriors from ancient Greece Dreadlocked their hair.
      Yes he keeps his ancestors traditions, there is nothing wrong with that at all. Hell, if you wanted to wear a Bowler hat and a suit I'd be fine with it, (though you'll probably be mocked by the public for it, though if it's "British Culture" your trying to protect you shouldn't let it bother you, after all it is your "Culture" right?)
      Out of curiosity, what "British traditions" are you not aloud to celebrate? Because I'm pretty sure your aloud to celebrate anything as long as it's not harming anyone. Not trying to be rude or patronising, I'm genuinely curious that's all.

    i would point out that the Celts did not embrace the Romans, the britions did not embrace German tribes, and the saxons did not embrace vikings.., they lived along side one another in some cases for some time but the lesson from this is that when push comes to shove, groups do not get on...I would argue that any country deliberately trying to influx Islam is anti-European and is knowingly taking part in what can only result in future negatives for people and politics, are they allowed to vote?

  • @mr.coolmug3181
    @mr.coolmug3181 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yes, the Celts and Silures and Picts, came here (or were already here) in a very different time, for very different reasons, with very different global circumstances. No one who lived in Britain at the time that the Romans were landing, would say that having Roman culture pushed on them was a good thing. No one Briton during the middle part of the first millenium, would say they enjoyed the arrival of Saxon hordes. Yes they have become a part of our identity over time, but it certainly wasn't what we wanted, and it would be idiotic to want more of it. Also, one can hardly compare immigrants of similar genetic identity coming here to, those who are of a very different, and non-related genetic, and cultural, and religious identity, coming here. One also cannot compare the numbers, they are literally incomparable, the levels of immigration we have now, to the levels of the past. So this is a total fallacy that somehow we are and have always been multicultural.

    • @jasonchatto
      @jasonchatto 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +MrCool Mug What Benjamin Zephaniah does is uses the classic left wing deception of pretending Britain has always been multicultural.
      He makes the false equation of using Celts and Picts who are white north western European tribes, with almost identical cultures and ways of life of the existing Brits, that slowly over many centuries, fully integrated into British society, without segregation or parallel cultures in enormous groups forming. The Romans invaded and conquered. They also consisted of western Europeans who introduced hundreds of advancements to the British way of life. Nobody complained.
      Now Benji is saying this equates to the last 50 years of unprecedented immigration from far away cultures and races that are almost alien to standard British values that has resulted in parallel cultures that exist along side each other. 27% of babies born in UK last year are from women born in another country. What is happening now is industrial social suicide.
      He also uses the bowler hat analogy. WTF A fkn hat is nothing more than a fashion Item. He is using the false equation of a choice of wearing a hat that has gone out of fashion as London moving from 95% White London accent Brits to less than 50% in the space of just a few generations.
      And they clap at his brilliantly deceptive answers.
      My question is. Does he know how wrong he is?
      The Romans brought us so many good things I would need a week to type them.
      Muslims have brought us some good things, like few new additions to the British menu. And some bad, like
      A totalitarian political religion of supremacist anti liberal values. A huge backward step in the liberation of Women and homosexuals, Intolerance to western values and lifestyle, Massive Ghettos of non English speakers that are not interested in integration, Their own law courts that operate outside national law with insane patriarchal systems of justice, An inherent loyalty to Islam over the State, Honor killings, Rape and pedophilia culture, forced marriages, massive rates of 2nd level incest causing a birth defect epidemic, and a small matter of huge and real threat to national security.
      To me, multiculturalism is immigration from many cultures all living spaced out among the host country, who are the majority. People who integrate and learn the language and adopt many of the host nations customs and lifestyle choices. This surely should of been the reason to chose Britain in the first place. Of course you can have freedom of religion, sexuality and wear what you want.
      What we have now are people who detest our culture and lifestyle, who are coming here because of how easy life is here compared to other nations.

    • @mr.coolmug3181
      @mr.coolmug3181 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jason Chatto
      Yes whites integrate with eachother to a large degree, but even in Britain today we have separate nations, calling for their own parliaments. If we are STILL trying to integrate with whites who are our neighbours, how can you EVER expect us to integrate with blacks or muslims?! Madness.

    • @jasonchatto
      @jasonchatto 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrCool Mug Sorry you have completely gone off on a tangent. You are conflating regional power struggles, inside the same Race, Religion and cultural group, who share basic values, with an industrial scale invasion of other Races, religion and culture. This is a totally false equation.
      Using facts I have just explained how dishonest and misleading Benjamin's argument is. Intentional or not.
      You are expecting us to integrate with those who have come here? Do you not think the reasonable thing is for immigrants to at least try adopt the host culture to a level?

    I understand a person's need to belong but a culture is not built in three or four generations, if not, in many hundreds of years. If they are totally "Britisized" fine, one can fully identify with the British culture. But they need to acknowledge it's not the same culture of their ancestors, their food, religion background, rituals and habits, costumes, art and symbols. Nothing racist about that. A French person would fall in the same definition, even though much closer to begin with. Trying to stun a culture for multiculturalism is actually denying the host culture. And if it is that, then is certainly nothing British about it, rather its anihilation.

  • @JoeNumberwang
    @JoeNumberwang 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Sorry, that isn't right. Benjamin says later something along the lines of "How can you have on your show someone who calls a BLACK person sunshine" - he took it as a racist remark. Probably thought it meant "Oh, sunburnt, black skin" I dunno. He was overly sensitive or just not very knowledgeable about simple English phrases.

  • @anynameyouwant
    @anynameyouwant 10 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    Zephaniah is a consummate wordsmith . He should know better. The phrase 'sunshine' is NOT racist. Get off your high horse, Benny. It seems to me that it's alright for any culture that rocks up on British shores to celebrate their culture, but the minute anyone dares to celebrate authentic, traditional British culture (or even English culture) they are jumped on by Zephaniah, Campbell and the lefty BBC saps as racist, jingoistic, xenophobes. Talk about double standards.

    I do admire what many Europeans have done in history,but I feel no loyalty to any country that I do not live in or was not born in.

    Come on, I dare you, define Britishness.
    While I wait, I'll add that you should probably think about your ancestors: look far enough, and you'll find that they came from elsewhere around Europe, migrated from around the world, bringing with them their own baggage of culture. And though there are always cases of people refusing to integrate, the vast majority happily try and learn: it is human desire to fit in. Now, if it is easy to fit in is another question: integration programs are scarce, and funding is always being reduced.
    But here's the thing: don't expect people to leave behind their traditions. We all have some happiness linking us to old memories, and actions, beliefs, food, will always be a way to bring those back.
    The culture of these small Isles of Britain has constantly changed over time; why stop at any one point? And more still, what rationale for choosing a specific point? ("You're Christian? How dare you, out of this country, where we pagans are the REAL brits.").
    As a side note, remember that while being one of the main colonising forces in history may have given you plenty of wealth, you also forced your culture (the one you had at the time) onto all your colonies (not to mention plundered theirs.). So if you're still wondering why the UK has such an attraction to foreigners around the world, you might want to go back and criticise your royalty for imposing said culture.
    Diversity is what unites us.
    Right. I'll go back to eating my British chicken tikka masala and curry. Very British.

    • @eonic11
      @eonic11 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Lampião weil According to my coworker of Indian descent, curry was introduced to India by the British Raj who modified Thai recipes : curry is Not Indian ! "Diversity is what unites us." Sure; I'm delighted to be one of a people who include blondes, brunettes and redheads as well as green-, blue-eyed, grey-eyed and brown-eyed members which no non-White peoples have. Also which produced the most beautiful women in the world. I don't need to wonder about the attraction the UK has for others . As a commenter on the old BNP website explained,
      "Me no daft
      Me no clown
      Me get dosh off Gordon Brown.
      Half I send to Pakistan
      Half I give to Taliban
      Family save to get a flighty
      Come to live in dear old Blighty
      Get a job? Not bloody likely!
      Go on dole and rip off Whitey."

    • @DantonPBWeil
      @DantonPBWeil 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +eonic11
      Your argument is in itself largely inconsistent. Let me break it down:
      1) "Curry is not Indian, it's Thai". Well, I'm glad you agree it ain't British. Secondly, that's not entirely true. At all. Curry comes from the tamil work kuri (Being of tamil descent, I can attest to this.). It is native of the entire Indus Valley [1]. However, in no way am I saying that curry doesn't exist anywhere else! The intermingling of cultures has led to curry being all over the world, so I'm glad that happened.
      2) Please note the irony in saying you have a coworker of Indian descent, and then going on to generalise by quoting: "Get a job? Not bloody likely!". Have a little respect for people doing honest work, regardless of where they come from.
      3) I'm surprised to hear you think "no non-Whites people" accept "blondes, brunettes and redheads as well as green-, blue-eyed, grey-eyed and brown-eyed members". I come from Malaysia, a multicultural society, by far and large (68%) muslim, where people of every creed are accepted. And that's only one example to negate your argument. Have you seen Egypt? South Africa? Brazil? Just because it's less common in some places doesn't mean it's not accepted.
      As for the UK having the most beautiful women in the world, you might want to open your horizons and explore a bit mate. Lots of gorgeously smart and beautiful people out there.
      4) Finally, quoting the BNP website speaks volumes. Dividing people into "White" and "non-White" is such a binary way of looking at things, and that by far does not encapsulate the world, in a way only such an ultra-nationalist party could do.
      As a side note, the BNP is no longer registered in the electoral commission (as of January 2016), because it failed to pay its on registration fee [2], on fraud and corruption claims. So much for issues of only foreigners stealing money.
      Also, do you honestly believe that idiotic song was written by someone of foreign descent?
      So yeah. Try again.

    Of course we should promote our already exisiting UNITED British identity. As the essence of Britishness is unity and co-operation between the four home nations how could a British identity not be a united one?
    Britishness is greater than each of its four parts alone. It is also a very distinct identity because the British, although now spread around the world, inhabited a clearly defined area with a remarkably stable history, when compared to the chaos of their European neighbours.

Studied this area (Suffragettes and Suffragists in the early 20th century) and historians "generally" agree that the Suffragettes who employed violent tactics (arson, vandalism...) did not secure the vote for women in england but actually furthered the prejudice against them. The Suffragists who were peaceful however, who knuckled won and helped the home front effort in WW1, working within the law, did get the vote.

    Defining Political Correctness based on your own present culture is wrong. Right and wrong should be defined through historical experience and enhancement of altruism, not by carping something as "British" or "American" values. Better to study the mistakes of the past and build a culture that can adapt to new changes.

    The fact is these idiots have absolutely no idea of Britains cultural dimensions or even basic critical incidents that have occurred. In this regard none of the people who have spoken are in a position to argue what is and is not British, especially in the modern context.

    When my family moved to Britain in the 50s we were always conscious not to call ourselves British as this was felt dishonest by “stealing” the ethnic identity of the true British. I was brought up in a generation that believed that you were born British you do not become British. Same is true ,of-course, for all ethnicities. So we always described ourselves as British citizens which were fine.

  • @janmesseddon1067

    British-ness is an amalgamation of English, Welsh, Scottish and Northern Irish. No person born in Great Britain should call themselves British, when they were born in one of the four countries that make up the United Country of Britain. People born in England are English and their culture is English. People born in Wales are Welsh and their culture is Welsh and the same for people born in Scotland and Northern Ireland. All people in Britain should be proud of the country of their birth in Britain or the country culture they have adopted to live in in Britain. To integrate their equal values with the religion of their choice. People of the world did not emigrate to Britain to be foreigners! Allow the people of the world to identify themselves with the culture of one of the 4 Government legislated cultures of Britain in birth or adoption for a future of belonging to the amalgamated Country of Britain, to work and prosper together for our ever!

The word Black as a negative has always been used in language to depict the creatures of the night, evil and witches etc, and has nothing to do with Brown skinned people.

You seem to think that the values constitutive of this (non-existent) British identity of yours is an a priori truth; but British values are historical, as it were - that is, there is no fixed British identity.
