My Father has a small ranch below the Superstition Mountains, there in Apache Junction - Such beautiful landscape - He's been retired as an aerospace executive for quite a few years now and loves that area - I visit as often as possible - There once was an awesome restaurant at the mining camp but it burned down several years ago, had great steaks - I've done quite a bit of mountain biking all over the Phoenix, Apache Junction, etc. area...
Maddie, I’m a fairly new subscriber. I’ve been watching TH-cam videos similar to yours for years now and I have to say you are probably one of a very few TH-camrs that seem genuine and real. That’s what I like the most about your videos. My comment has probably nothing to do with this particular video but just my observation of the many I’ve seen prior to this one. Keep it up!
Aww thanks so much! I used to think all social media was really fake and gimmicky before I realized it doesn’t have to be. I really try to be honest and down to earth, so that’s wonderful to hear that you see that in me 💛
Wearing heavy cotton/ cotton canvas is better for traipsing through the desert, it gets stuck less on prickers and doesn't fray and puncture like polyester and nylon. It's longer lasting. But it weighs more. I also find that when you sweat the cotton soaks it up and holds it which actually can help you stay cooler.
Y'know I do these sorta 'curious exploration "ranger talks"' in my head on every little hike...a silent internal monologue, that is similar to your commentary and musings. Such a fun way to engage with your environment!
This brings up some good memories from my trip across the US in 2021. I stay 2 nights at the Lost Dutchman State Park and did a day hike around the mountains (Treasure loop and Prospector View) It's an amazing place
Great video! I just did the same hike a couple weeks ago and I visited my parents. They live in Gold Canyon which is right at the base of the Superstition Mountains. Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing!
I never knew there are black bears in AZ. I enjoy watching these hikes. No nonsense, just getting out there and exploring. Were you using all trails as a map, or to help navigate? Also, did you come across any other hikers out there?
Sometimes I wonder if I was looking at the right website when I saw that about bears. Seems like they wouldn’t have enough shelter or things to eat out here. And glad to hear you like my videos! I used all trails sparingly to save phone battery, just checking where I was when there was a fork in the trail or it didn’t look like I was on a trail at all! And I saw plenty of people at the beginning and end of the loop, but in the middle, I didn’t see another soul for hours and hours
The mountains of the basin and range area of the Southwest can be almost as high as 12.000 feet. Black bears can usually be found above 6000 feet. The last grizzly seen in Arizona was in 1921 near Tucson at 8000 feet in the Rincon Mountains. It was trapped and killed by a hunter. The main reason for securing food in the lower deserts is to keep all the little critters away from your food. Packrats, coyotes and mice will chew right through stuff sacks.

That sounds Awesome Superstition Mountains, I'd try a hike like that! Thanks for taking us along Maddie 💕 I enjoyed your classification of cacti, loved the night time photos 💕🌠
Just a peace of advice, no matter how tired you are from your hike. Always set up camp before rest if you don’t you will be twice as tired. And stack rocks on your tent stakes if they don’t stay in sandy spots.
Interesting, that hasn't happened to me so far! And I know about rocks on tent stakes, just didn't look like it wasn't gonna hold when I was setting up!
Thank you! I used rocks sometimes but it didn’t occur to me this time because the sand seemed really densely packed. Just learning more and more each day!
@@BeerinBeautifulPlaces In the early 1980's I backpacked Yosemite and Sequoia for 6 weeks solo using topography maps, impossible to get lost if you know how to read them. I love your style and subbed, looking forward to your documentary!!!
Oh I LOVE Arizona! We did Flatiron once outside of Phoenix and it was such an adventure! We went the wrong way and I can say that is the hardest hike I have ever done. I think a lot of it was the mental wear and tear of being like are we lost? Did we get off trail? Why am I free climbing a cliff when I am not even a climber? You know the typical things you expect on a hike 😂😉.
I did that for one stake that wouldn’t stay because the sand was too soft, but the one that the wind ripped out was on pretty well packed sand! I didn’t think it would happen at all!
Amazing and exotic landscape for me. I think in Europe, "similar" you can find only in Spain (Canary Islands for example). You are very brave sleeping alone outside there. I' m curious on your documentary too.
Great video Maddie. I've hiked through similar landscapes in Tenerife in the Canary Islands. Amazing landscapes there including Mount Tede volcano if you're ever in Europe.
I don’t remember how much I went into detail about the mouse living in my van in this video, but the peppermint oil didn’t stop him, so I finally caught him with a trap that doesn’t kill them but just keeps them in a box! And some fellow hikers told me they’ve never heard of bears in this area!
Good memories……in 1992 Me and a bunch of my friends use to hike there on certain nights, all my friends were on acid, and me being the only sober person…..I used to hike a head, and draw aliens in the dirt. It used to freak them the hell out 🤣😂🤣
You rock. I tried making money while on the road too, I was unsuccessful. Your content is really good though, I bet you'll make it with the youtube thing.
Please think about carrying protection...no one who lives here in AZ would go out alone into the desert without some sort of protection. Women (and men) go missing all the time in AZ and are never seen again. You have drug dealers, cartels, weirdos and all sort of types out there and you just never know. And law enforcement is not close at hand, nor do they expend huge amounts of resources on finding the lost. We currently have two cases of missing women who will probably never be seen again, only their cars were found. And that's just the tip of the iceberg out of the 1000 people currently lost in Arizona (you can look it up) including Kyron Horman who went missing in the Superstitions in 2021, never seen again. It's a beautiful area but has many dangers, both natural and man-made.
NEVER store your food in your tent. animals will chew thru your tent to get the food. A bear bag is useful for more animals than bears, if you have a tree to hang it in. O/W, a bear can is the best way to go.
Yep, I know it’s definitely not advised! I thought, if mice are going to get into my food wherever it is, I’d at least like the chance to wake up and shoo them off. But it was a one-time situation and I don’t plan to do that again
I just think she needs to carry a Gun,even men do.i live in Illinois but I've been going into those mountains since the late 70,s. And I don't mean over wild life..Just sayin

Yes, pumice is a soft volcanic rock. You know everything, Maddie.
Haha, I just know that from teaching outdoor education a few years back!
Did this exact loop yesterday as an overnight trip also….
Nice! I found it on AllTrails!
Yep, nearly every plant in Arizona has thorns not just cactus.
Peppermint oil (100%) keeps mice away.
As far as bears goes it is better to be safe.

The Superstition Mountains is part of a giant caldera.
Cool! I had to look up what a caldera was, but now that I know, that's awesome!
LOL I remember my first time in the Superstitions
Ive never seen a bear in the Superstitions. I think its a super rare thing to spot one.
Productive you! Thanks for your new contents. Just enjoy your trip.

Millions of years ago the Superstitions was a volcano.
No bears, but there is mountain lions & coyotes. Plus scorpions, snakes etc

Nope, 48 was Wyoming, back in October

A loop I found on All Trails! Dutchman, Boulder Canyon, and Second Waters Trails Loop
👍
I hope I make this one
