    Wikipedia:
    Rebel Moon - Part One: A Child of Fire, or simply Rebel Moon, is a 2023 American epic space opera film directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he co-wrote with Kurt Johnstad and Shay Hatten. Its ensemble cast features Sofia Boutella, Djimon Hounsou, Ed Skrein, Michiel Huisman, Doona Bae, Ray Fisher, Charlie Hunnam, and Anthony Hopkins. The film is set in a fictional galaxy ruled by the imperialistic Motherworld, whose military, the Imperium, threatens a farming colony on the moon of Veldt. Kora, a former Imperium soldier, ventures on a quest to recruit warriors from across the galaxy to make a stand against the Imperium before they return to Veldt.
    Following a limited theatrical release on December 15, 2023, Rebel Moon was released by Netflix on December 22. It received generally negative reviews from critics. An R-rated director's cut, titled Rebel Moon - Chapter One: Chalice of Blood is set for release in mid-2024,[3][4] and a sequel, Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver, released on April 19, 2024.

    5:07 are they? Just because it's longer doesn't mean it's good. It'll still lead to the same conclusion. If Zack Snyder can't tell a cohesive story in or around the 2 hour mark then he's a terrible dictator/writer.

    • @omniviewer2115
      @omniviewer2115 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      And where is it written that a movie must only ever be two hours? None of the Lord of the Rings adaptations clock in at that length, yet nobody is claiming that Peter Jackson should have been able to adapt each book within a two-hour runtime.
      This just strikes me as a strange argument to make. Not all stories can be told in the same amount of space. Sure, there's an accepted average depending on the format, but the length alone does not determine the quality. Some movies need only a few minutes to get to the end, and some need a few hours. Having a studio shave away content from a very long film just to fit an arbitrary idea of "feature length" is hardly the fault of the director/writer.
      Let me put it this way: Edgar Allan Poe wrote mostly short stories and poems, with only one written work being long enough to count as a novel. Is this what we judge his quality as an author by?

    • @JulioLenin88
      @JulioLenin88 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@omniviewer2115What he meant was that if you need a 4 hour cut, but still released the film at 2 hours long (can't blame the studio. He does that with everyone), then you don't know how to tell a story.
      Especially if you can easily point out what you can easily cut without compromising the plot ad visuals

    • @omniviewer2115
      @omniviewer2115 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@JulioLenin88 You can't blame the studio....when it was the studio that demanded the cuts for something like BvS so they could get a safe PG-13 rating? You do know that a a very similar thing happened with the 2003 Daredevil movie, right? It's not unheard of. Daredevil is another example of a movie that had a significant chunk of content cut from it which led to a bland theatrical release, but which has a vastly superior director's cut. Don't even get me started on the multiple cuts of Blade Runner or Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
      If this were only a thing that happened to Snyder, there might actually be a case, but it happens all the time to multiple filmmakers in Hollywood.
      But that's also clearly not what the initial comment says. It says, quote: "If Zack Snyder can't tell a cohesive story in or around the 2 hour mark then he's a terrible dictator/writer." That reads as though there is a specific runtime that should be aimed for, and Snyder's penchant for making movies that run longer is the problem. That logic, of course, is ridiculous.
      Snyder makes long movies that lean into R-ratings. That's his thing. Now, there's always discussion to be had about if the material itself, but the runtime is immaterial.
      Again, the Lord of the Rings movies all run over three hours in their theatrical forms. They also each have extended cuts that fans agree are vastly superior, especially The Two Towers. Peter Jackson could not tell these stories "in or around the 2 hour mark", and then even longer cuts with vital material were released. Does this fact alone mean Peter Jackson failed to adapt the books? Or do we base our assessments of these movies on the content itself, regardless of how long they are?

    The problem with Zack Snyder is that he isn’t a great writer. I would even say he’s terrible. But that’s ok because writing convincing and meaningful dialogue can be difficult depending on what story you’re trying to tell. I’m an aspiring filmmaker and writer. I have ideas but I don’t think I can write at 2 hour long script. Maybe a 10 or 20 minute script if I have the inspiration and understanding of story I’m trying to tell. I have a film on my channel that is based on SCP-1504 or Joe Shmoe. If you’re interested please turn down your brightness just enough so background doesn’t take you out of the story. It’s a mistake on my part because I couldn’t find a suitable location so I had to darken the background as much as possible but didn’t intend on devices with light mode. Also stick around to the end credits for an Easter egg.

    Rebel moon is a pretentious action movie that has its action dragged down by long backstories and flashbacks that looks more interesting than what we’re watching and exposition that takes away from the movie. If I didn’t listen to the opening scene of child of fire then I’d be more interested with Noble’s lines talking about slain kings and the explanation later would be more interesting. The character writing is just badly done in a lot of places with characters going into NPC mode when you could learn more about them like how does Titus’ revenge quest bode with those in it for the money and cause respectively? We don’t ever really see that play out or where the film let it’s actors show you, Kora’s first few scenes are an example of it where she says what happened and about something making her different when she was doing enough to show that anyway. It can’t seem to let you wonder and that’s half the fun of these stories because it gives you something to dig into afterwards.
    It honestly needed more work in terms of figuring out what it wanted to be. The original concept is in tact as a sci-fi seven samurai but it doesn’t seem to work for launching a franchise because it only really works with lower level antagonists like bandits or a low level figure in a larger organisation doing something personal or who’s desperate. For it to have a logical satisfying conclusion, there needs to be an easy explanation to why the heroes being dead or leaving doesn’t leave them open to another attack, which isn’t really possible when you’ve just killed Horatio Nelson whilst sinking HMS victory in one go. I will also say that the required ensemble cast doesn’t look to be Snyder’s strength and the fact we rarely an exploration of character differences show this. You can argue that this could be rectified with a director’s cut but the characters are built too similarly with the same brand of devastation pushing them towards being happy to fight the evil empire. I’d have preferred a movie just following Kora’s backstory, it sounds like a much more interesting story about identities being replaced, indoctrination and the impact of loss on a person eventually culminating in a great betrayal that sets her on a different path and if they had the backbone then she could be responsible for the damage done to the other rebels rather than just adopted by a guy who killed her old family to be be able to.
    Hope that’s all readable. I’ve been thinking on these movies for a bit. Honestly disappointed because the idea sounded cool and I’m always interested in new franchises but it seems Snyder failed to understand why A new Hope works so well, if drops you in with a short brief and gets you swept up from there.

    Most would agree it worked for 300, a loosely historic mythological epic (which I think is where his style works best).

    Zach is a director that intrigues me so much.
    I love two of his films (zsjl and watchmen (not seen 300)) but the rest just conflict me, I'm an artist so his visuals are sublime (when not too muted), but it's really good how he can articulate every choice he makes.
    Mini unimportant dc rant:
    But man I just hate some of his choices, like I'm with alan moore on his superman take that superman being a godlike figure goes against him, because god's make rules for others while superman is the opposite, all the jesus stuff I think it makes superman feel less original and like his JEWISH creators just made jesus into a superhero. And puts it forward he's told or expected to do good as opposed to he naturally wants to. And how the black suit is his definitive look? huh, I feel that doesn't match his arc at all, if anything going brighter was something Joss did better. And batman killing I just don't like.
    actual point:
    I need to ask, are you a good director if you can't get across your ideas in less than 3-4 hours? he requires an extra version to every film remotely decent or good. His ideas feel too simple, like his profound biblical ideas.... are in everything, they aren't even original or unique. Hell, rebel moon is sold as "the new star wars".... here's a note, star wars already exists. Kingsman is like "the new bond" but it isn't just that, everything about rebel moon down to it's love of a blank sandy planet feels like the sequels copying every original trilogy foot note or planet except this isn't even star wars.
    I don't think zach is a good writer, I see a lot of myself in his work and his ideologies as an artist, however... all of it is visual. His writing is quite shallow and very flawed, his good elements come from the visuals and it assisting the story.
    what's the best scene in zsjl? well subjective, but the contenders are the speed of force, cyborg discovering his powers, the league standing together. Yeah they're all visual storytelling that stand alone. ZSJL to me (from a lover of it) I think are saved by these moments.
    I think he can succeed working with a writer, he reminds me exactly of bruce timm, with a paul dine, dwayne mcduffie etc. he's amazing as an art director (or was his work is so bland now). But alone or with more control you get the killing joke 2016 and his own weird head canons becoming official fan fiction like batman fucking batgirl, or in zack's case; batman murdering.

    When I keep seeing advertisements and lead ups to Rebel Moon Part 1 release, I constantly heard Zack Snyder's Star Wars. Zack Snyder's current directing style is definitely R rated as of late. Star Wars is PG13. Also hearing there is a planned part 3 and 4 of Rebel Moon too makes it sound like Netflix is trying to see which way the franchise should be but it's stupid that they just release 1 version straight to streaming. I feel it would have been better to release both versions of each film at once.
    Even though I did enjoy both personally, I just releasing these downgraded Rebel Moon versions does feel it ruined all potential in the franchise ever continuing than maybe both PG13 and R versions.

    The movies are visually stunning. But in terms of plot and characters it feels like a hodge podge of ideas other movies and shows have alredy done before in less time, but with nothing new or interesting to actually distinguish it.
    I'm not asking for a new franchise to reinvent the wheel, but if the audience is consuming your work and thinking about other works of fiction, that have many of the same elements, that they could be enjoying instead, that's when you've failed as a writer in my opinion.

    The extended cuts or whatever will pump some blood into the heart of this but it feels like it's on support, i can't stress enough how fucking dumb it was to have this already compromised in it's debut. I dont care if it was Zack or Netflix, you both doomed this thing to instant joke status and it's gonna be impossible to not shake those steps.
    My only hope and this wont ever happen is that Snyder get's off his high horse and never writes again and let Gail Simone do all the writing. Cause just cause his cuts are longer doesn't guarantee quality, exception being Watchmen cause the blueprint was already laid out.

  • @LilMissThor
    @LilMissThor 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think Zack Snyder did a great job with Justice League and DCEU would have been better off is they'd leaned into it rather than constantly wanting their cake and eat it too. They wanted dark brooding Supermans and Batmans to be as beloved and marketable as the bright, colorful and heartfelt Supermans and Batmans of yesteryear. And that's just not how things work. You can't go for a darker Superman story about alienation and loneliness that comes with superpowers, and then flip the script and act like he was a lovable smiling hero of the people. Nobody bought it. Committing to Snyder's vision would have at least created a more coherent and enjoyable DCEU that might still be ongoing and viewed in a more favorable light.
    I do disagree with Watchmen though -- they were never meant to be cool. Nor were they meant to be assholes. And that's why Zack never "got it" imho. They were just meant to be *human* -- and as messy and complicated and fallible as any other person put into positions of power and forced to make decisions with no good answer. Moore's deconstruction of superheroes was never "what if heroes were assholes who killed and said fuck", it was "what if superheroes behaved like real people like you and me" rather than the romanticized and/or idealized superheroes of yore.

    Well.. Snyder didn't write Watchmen. He just directed it and put on his flare. The dialogue was just copied from the comics and put to screen.
    Honestly, I watched the director's cut twice and the theatrical cut three times. They both suck, if you sit down to think about the plot.
    Plus, with the Rebel Moon stuff, that's both Snyder and Netflix jerking him off for a director's cut when it isn't necessary. Why not just release the actual movie? 🤷🏽‍♂️
    Well I know, to recreate the hype of the Snyder Cut. Seems like he's going to continue to do that's for the rest of his movies from here on out. It's funny how when he's left to his own devices, people complain. When he's adapting an already established property with competent writers, everyone edges him tondeath.
    I just can't understand why people actually think he's a great director.

It being longer doesn’t always mean it will be good except lord of the rings of course but still if Zack has to always do director’s cut to make it better is just lazy to me because that means to me is that you can’t write a good movie if it isn’t long enough. I will never understand the logic of those behind Netflix. They banged the drum for tiger king during 2020. Yet, pull the plug on dark crysta:age of Resistance the day after it wins a emmy. They are then bold when telling stories like the Jeffery Dahmer series. Yet they get cold feet over a r rated sci-fi series. It's almost as if they overreact a thousand times over when they get criticized.
