"Everybody's doing a brand new dance now..." Oh the fun memories this song brings back. This song was all the rage, and everybody Was doing the Loco-Motion!
She was Carole King's babysitter. Songs about dance crazes were very popular. The Twist, Mashed Potato, The Pony, The Hully Gully, The Peppermint Twist, The Stroll, The Popeye, and so many others.
The ladies singing in the back are Darlene Love and The Blossoms. The Blossoms were the house backup singers on this tv show: "Shindig". Darlene Love is known for recording "Christmas ( Baby Please Come Home ) ". She performed this song on The David Letterman Show for years every Christmas. Now she performs it on "The View".
Eva recorded this in 1962. Carole King is actually one of her backup singers on the studio recording. Carole later recorded this herself (1980?), so she did a cover of her own song. :)
Grew up hearing the Grand Funk Railroad version but boy do I love this. I can hear it over and over and over again. It just feels so good. And this particular recording was a little before I was born I think. But the Grand Funk Railroad one came out when I was in grade school. But I do love how this older version has the stand up bass on it as opposed to the electric bass. It's just so dynamic
Holy Moly!!! 😮😮😮 I grew up with this song , LOCO MOTION , constantly played on the blooming radio, but not this version of LITTLE EVA, which I BELIEVE , she is the rightful owner or the ORIGINAL singer for this song, and all this time from my childhood I thought, KYLIE MINOGUE who is a Australian singer, who did this LOCO MOTION song, which I had thought this song was hers😮😮
Hey, thanks again for reacting to this great old song. You got to realize that back in the 50's and 60's life was nothing like it is today. Kids that were mostly teenagers would listen to these kind of pop songs and things were very low keyed and fun and they were hearing these songs for the first time. This was a very popular song during the 60's. My how times have changed.
During this time period there were lots of dance songs. Such as "The twist" the follow up song lets twist again like we did last summer, Elvis "Do the clam" from one of elvis movies✌️❤️
Teeny bopper dance music, that's what a fair bit of "rock" was before '65. This particular song is from '62, and Carole King (who you might know as a singer songwriter in the 70s) has partial credit for it. As for Little Eva, she kept at it with a variation called "Old Smokey Locomotion" and "Let's Turkey Trot," but we don't need to go there. "The Twist" by Chubby Checker is a top song of this genre.
Rock and roll pretty much didn't get serious until Bob Dylan dropped "Like A Rolling Stone" in 1965. For a few more classic early sixties dance songs, check out Chubby Checker "The Twist", Sam Cooke "Twistin' the Night Away", and Dee Dee Sharp "Mashed Potato Time" when you can.
Actually, all things considered, in the early 60's the girl groups were about among the best thing you could hear on the radio. Not a great period as far as RnR goes. Luckily a British Invasion was on the way. All genres would benefit.
The background dancers aren't doing the loco-motion. Those hand motions just look weird. Little Eva comes closest to the movements plus she's describing some of movements -- "move your hips ... jump up ... jump back" -- something the background dancers are not doing. There's much more soul to it and hips should be moving. I think Eva toned down for the TV show.
Just a fun song that was played at dances all through the 60s! Nothing serious, just get up and dance! There are a couple remakes by Grand Funk, in the 70s and Kylie Minogue, in the 80s! The Grand Funk version is a little more "rock."

Was covered by Grand Fuck Railroad.
Also Kylie Minogue a Aussie in the late 80s and it did peak in the US at #3 about 1988 and on top in Australia. So the song had a few covers....
Very well.
Grand Funk 's version made it into every roller skating rink during the 70's.
Yes, that's the version I danced to!
Funk* lol
Written by Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffin.

A huge hit at the time
My older sister taught me how to do the locomotion in our livingroom when I was 4. It was a lot of fun. Reminiscing down memory lane..❤❤❤❤❤
First big Jamaican in UK.
Fantastic ❤️👍🏽👍☘️

"Do The Mash Potato"
Every week we had a new dance.
We girls had slumber parties and woke up to American Bandstand and learned the newest dance.
Another pioneer-trail blazer of the ear. Love her.
Oh yeah baby - do the locomotion! It's perfectly fine to be entertained and laugh at some of this old stuff - it's a hoot!

This is Goffin/King's contribution to teenage dance hits. Lots of fun.

The Brill Music replaced Tin Pan Alley and people like Carol King, Neil Diamond and so many started there

Similar era, you gotta hear Fontella Bass do "Rescue Me." Grand Funk Railroad covered The LocoMotion in 1974. Different. Not better. But different.
Haven’t heard this in years

Loved the British Invasion, but many of the early 60's girl groups were also fantastic, some of the smoothest vocals & R&B out there!
@@SK-lk3iu Especially when a young Phil Spector was producing the music.
please do kylie minogue's version from the start of her music career in 87
You should listen to (The name game) & ( the clapping song) BY SHIRLEY ELLIS both are just fun older songs.

rock is only entertaining

The song took off, the dance didn't.
So catchy
