Thanks for posting this - we are looking to replace our boat for something a little larger. We currently run a single Volvo D4 210 but are keen to explore boats fitted with twin D3's. I understand the D3's are basically a marinised car engine so I had the feeling they may not survive as well as the sea going D4. You video sort of proves these motors are up to the job. Ta.

Thanks. They're up to 3200 hours now. Will post another video around the 3500 hour mark.

Im late to this thread but would love to hear when you did the timing belt/idler/tensioner change on the engines?

I did the timing belt at about 2500 hours. I’m up to 4300 hours and I’m about to do it again. The old one looked like brand new when I removed it.

How have the drives held up?

Hi Casey. The drives have now done 4500 hours. I had them re-conditioned once but that was not long after the prop hit a piece of wood. We found that if you use speedy sleeves where the seals rub on the shafts it stops any wear on the actual shafts. With the speedy sleeves you don't need to replace the shafts saving thousands.

Hi guys, we are just thinking about buying this engine to replace the older one on our business boat. What about the maintenance costs in these 4 years? I mean ordinary and extraordinary maintenance.
    Thanks a lot

I service the engines every 200 hours. Oil in engine and gearbox, fuel and oil filters, etc.
The gearboxes were overhauled at about 1700 hours. I used to get water into the gearbox every second service. Mainly due to fishing line and barnacles growing on the shaft seals. Ever since the service this hasn’t been a problem. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
I also replaced the water intake pump because I got some salt water on it cos I didn’t do up the water separator cap properly.
Both of the trim senders have been replaced. Barnacles grown around the trim sender cable, then when your turning the barnacles cut into the cables.
Apart from that I’ve had no other problems.

    Are these 5 cylinder engines?
