They are very big in Japan. You don't play Nippon Budokan as many times as they have if you aren't famous. Outside Japan it's more of a cult following. Casual music fans that have heard of them dub Dir en grey "That weird Japanese band with the crazy guy" (exact words I've heard). You have to ease into Dir en grey. It also helps if you already have a grasp on music in general
I have 20 (yes twenty!) Dir En Grey reactions on my channel - here is the whole playlist th-cam.com/play/PLINxFL_jLfFYe88tCykWjoEGE_cr4oZ51.html so feel free to check these out :) Thanks for watching!
I really enjoyed your reaction. Glad you commented on Shinya's amazing job on the drums here! The song was originally released in 2000 on their second full album of the same name. This is a rerecorded and extended version form 2013. Listening to this I am always amazed by how good the band still sounded with all of the problems they had during the time! Kyo had major vocal problems, Shinya played with several broken ribs for weeks, Toshiya had a dangerous ear infection and the days they weren't playing they spent travelling to the next venue. With how many operations and treatment Kyo had because of his voice during the last 20 years you would think it impossible that his voice just gets better and better, but it does. You should really take a look/lend an ear to his second band Sukekiyo which is even more experimental. Maybe start with "Elisabeth Addict" : th-cam.com/video/XY__SpWjXgI/w-d-xo.html or aftermath (which for me is like a gateway to an undiscovered underwater-world, incredibly, hauntingly beautiful): th-cam.com/video/fCWuPz-znhc/w-d-xo.html Have a great day!
Personalmente creo que dir en grey es una de las mejores bandas de el mundo, soy fan de ellos desde el 2005, me encantan tus videos, saludos desde chile 🇨🇱 👍
They use 4 different guitars in this song, if you didnt realize 😂😂 The drumer have a good classical taste i think, and the bass solo also killing.. Actually im cryin for the first time i hear this version, this is one of their best, and one of the best music i ever hear in my live. And the vocalist, yeah the vocalist, is not human its voice machine and music actor, the best lyricist who can really express his song , and his facial expressions are soo..soooooooo..*speechless T.T) and during this performance he is sick and hospitalized right after the concert. So the next day concerts are canceled. But for my experience listening to them, this concert is one of their best performance. I like this band from 2010 till now, and i think 2013-14 are their golden years.. Again..thankyou for react this :) maybe you should react one of the Magma or Bahaus songs :p
@@JohnG_YT I saw DEG live once in Paris and feeling Kyo's (and the whole band's) presence is something amazing even though it was generally a smaller gig
the singer kyo niimura be a tenor with bout a 5 octave range goin from A1 - E6 they also be awesome live l got to see them live in 2008 and l has all their albums
This, right here. This is how you should to react to dir en grey, as an experience, feeling the changes, the vibe of the instruments, the beauty in Kyo's voice. This is the best video reaction I ever saw in TH-cam. Loved
Macabre is a crazy good song that always evolves, they played a slightly different version in 2017 with another amazing videography. I am happy you enjoyed the many layers of the song :) one thing you pointed out and that I appreciate in Japan: people waited for the music to end until they cheered. Fans from abroad, please be considerate and do not interrupt the band with cheering/screaming/singing especially not during solos... It really ruins the atmosphere for great pieces like macabre..
I am so glad to see someone react as positively as I do. I've been a fan of theirs for 17 years and I am really grateful of your comments. I feel like not everyone can understand how deep, complete and incredible their music is. Thank you.
A fact that you should know is that the vocalist (Kyo) had voice problems because before he smoked, after a while it became more serious, around 2012 - 2013 he had to be hospitalized urgently and now he takes more care of his voice . That is why in some parts it is heard as if forcing the voice. I have always admired him for his ability to play with the voice and have a very good voice range, but his so theatrical attitude is really something to admire, and more live. I recommend that you check some song from your solo band, it's called "Sukekiyo". So I also recommend the song "Elissabeth Addict" to start Very good reaction as always.
He had vocal surgery to remove nodes. Nodes are cause by callouses on the vocal cords from pushing your voice too far/screaming in unhealthy ways. Smoking probably didn't help, but vocal nodes are not caused by smoking.
Kyo actually stopped smoking around 2004 I think. Told band members that this band will be a non-smoking band for better live performance. Members didn't want to stop so they decided to kiss the crap out of Kyo until he gave up and allowed others to smoke lol.
@@gjrloiouyfchicfhhudrgky3470 so either he's back on smoking, either it is only for performance purpose, because he showed up smoking a cigarette while performing one of the new songs.
Great reaction, JohnG! I had so much fun. I'm glad you came back to Dir en grey. I agree with everything you and Rabid Black said on this. I am totally ok with complicated music in general. I think i taught myself how to appreciate it with the time being. But still not everyone would be able to like it.
Please react to Dir en Grey - Dozing Green th-cam.com/video/S4z1uI2Gnnc/w-d-xo.html there you can see the live potential of the clean voices, it's from 2008 - 2010 and you can see the evolution of Kyo vocals. It's a song more commercial, cool riff right there. You're gonna like it, seriously! cheerss
exactly... exactly! it is more than just a live, it's an experience. thank you for reacting, i was already very excited to watch it before the video even started.
If you don't see the lenght of this song you'll have a heart attack, this is so intense and words are so deep and strong If I recommand you a live song of Dir en Grey is "Mazohyst of Decadence", also deep like this but older

Kyo: (scream) "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO"
JohnG:

Yes, why are they not bigger? The music is awesome, but it not easy listening for the average listener. Thanks for your great reaction.
