What Your Query Rejection Means: A Collaboration with Katlyn Duncan

  • Today I break down the stigma around query letter rejections. Too often I hear writers saying they can't query because they fear the rejection letters will break them down and I'm here to tell you, you'll be okay. There's a lot to be learned from even a form rejection and fears to be put aside. Let's get going.

    It's so good to have this information out there for anyone that is either getting ready to query or just wanting to write but scared to get to this part. Great video!

      Thanks, Amber! I am hoping it encourages people to dive in and give it a try.

    I consider rejections as a victory. Anyone who has truly gotten to this point (written a book, edited it to death, and had the courage to send their child into the world) is a minority of people who are “going to write a book. Guys do the work and go for it. You never know what can happen. Dune (one of the most successful science fiction books of all time) was rejected and finally published by and editor at a car repair book company, Chilton, who could see what it was). Best of luck to all in our writing endeavors.

      I agree. I see so many people stop before the query stage, but for me, it's another milestone accomplishment in my writing career. With three books published, I'm still nervous querying the next one, but I'm so excited for it, too. It's important to remember it's not personal if you get a rejection and that all authors experience it. Thanks for the watch and thoughtful comment.

    Love these "writing life" videos. I've been on the receiving end of rejections too and that first one stings, but agree it's part of the business and there's a lot of factors at play. And YES I totally want someone who is so excited for my work to represent me ⭐️

      I'm so glad that you found value in the video. It's a "subjective" industry and when the fit is right, I'll be ready.

    I see each rejection as one step closer to the long awaited "yes."

    Thank you for sharing you letters with all of us. I'm not at the phase of querying yet, but definitely nervous about it, as I know it's tough out there, but worth a shot. Keep persevering beautiful.

      You are oh so welcome. It's for sure a process that takes some getting used to, but it's not all bad. And honestly, when you realize how not personal a lot of the passes are, it's a lot easier to take. Good luck when you do get to that phase. I know you'll crush it.

    This was such a good idea to put this together! I received endless rejections for 3 manuscripts over 13 years before I signed with an agent (just last month!)
    I made a spreadsheet to track responses and graying out names for rejections became very matter-of-fact "ah that's a no, okay then!" time to move on. The only rejections that really hurt were full manuscript rejections.
    omg I also got an assistant response once, and it was an agent I was really excited about. I tried not to have "Dream agents" but there was one, just one, I really really had hopes for and liked, and I didn't even get an answer from them, just their assistant.
    Best of luck to you in querying! - Rebecca

      Congratulations, Rebecca! I'm getting my second novel ready to query right now. I expect a lot more rejections, but I'm ready for them. Hopefully, this video helps other new authors recognize it's not so scary to query.

    Thank u for doing this video, definitely glad it hasn’t put u off.
    Hopes for my book 😊 if I ever decide to try the traditional route when the time comes, and anyone else who follows this path.
    We have stories to tell and someone’s gonna wanna hear them 😊

      That was my hope for this video, that it would reassure those about to take on the querying process and or encourage them to just go for it. :) You absolutely have a story to tell and I, for one, can't wait to read it.

    Thanks for sharing your rejection letters, Julie. I am nowhere near querying, but it sure sounds like the first "not interested" letter was the hardest and then got "easier" as you got more. The assistant letter would have pissed me off, too. :(

    • @PagesandPens
      @PagesandPens  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Truly, they're not that bad. The first one is a little "ouch" just because you're not a magical butterfly they love on the first go, but that's okay. I'm glad it shed a light on how harmless they are and how truly subjective the industry is.

    I remember getting the first example you mentioned, but weirdly, it didn't bum me out. I was excited to get my first rejection, and just kept going.

    • @PagesandPens
      @PagesandPens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I was excited to start the process, and none of the rejections broke me or made me want to stop trying. I love the entirety of the process, even the challenging parts. I wouldn't give this up for anything.

    I would not want to work with that last agency. They sound overwhelmed (or lack time management skills lol).

    • @PagesandPens
      @PagesandPens  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree. It frustrated me to be brushed off like that but it was telling of the way they work and I know that wouldn't vibe with me as an agency. So, I still learned something. :)
