    Last week I had the absolute delight of spending a week in Chamonix on Trails & Roots Camp Chamonix, a trail running camp (and my first ever training camp!). I didn't quote know what to expect, so I thought I'd film & share a little bit about what goes on - this is only one day of course, but gives a good indication of what we got up to each day :)
    If you like the look of Trails & Roots, definitely check out their other camps! They have them around the world and they look EPIC. If you do enquire about any of them, please mention my name - I get a little kickback if you sign up (at no extra cost to you) and it helps me see the impact of my posts & videos!

    About the shoes... I feel you!!!! After I changed to barefoot shoes for my daily life, I ran into the same issue as you did with running shoes. Most conventional running shoes have a very narrow toebox and apart from that being a painful issue, I also just don't feel like restricting my feet from the way they are supposed to move any more😀 I also even injured myself with HOKAs before, as I just "slid" of the squishy high soles and broke my ankle. Anyway, as Barefoot Shoes were too much for me to handle for running, I tried Altra Escalante shoes, which i loved, but the material just wore off much to quickly for me! And I think the quality doesn't meet the prize (for me).
    Since a year I'm madly in love now, with my running shoes from Topo Athletic! 3 Models, you might like to look into, are : Ultrafly 4 (5mm heal drop), Magnifly 4 (no heal drop) and Fli-Lyte 4 (3 mm heal drop). I personally chose the Ultrafly 4, which I know, has a bit more of a heal drop, but way less than most running shoes. It has a wide toe box and at the same time sits very snug at my ankles, which I love! It's like the perfect combination of freedom for my toes but also snug fit on the rest of the foot, so that I'm still connected to the ground.
    For my Thru Hike in a very hilly coastline region this year, I bought the topo Athletic MT-4, which has a lot of grip, 3 mm heal drop and is extremely light (about 240 g in my size).

    That looks like an incredible trip/ investment in running!! Also a great way for single runners to have a fun safe vacation in a beautiful place with a like minded group. I can't wait to see more mountains and food. That chef is not only very talented, but seems like a total sweetheart of a human! I'm have to check out if there are any affordable running camps a reasonable distance from me for next year.

    re wide shoes try Topo Athletic, the problem with a lot if wide fit shoes (including hoka wide fit) is that they are wider in the mid foot but still have a tapered toe box. Topo have a foot shaped toe box.
    I have wide feet and I do wear Speedgoat 5 wide fit, and they are ok, just press on my little toe which i can tape up, but Topo fit better and grip better so i wear them more often.

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes I've heard this too! Only problem is that the width of the toe box is only one tiny fraction of what needs to be right in a trail shoe. I love everything else about the hokas and have struggled with lots of other trainers before because of grip, stack height, arch height etc etc. But I'll take a look!

    • @trailsandbeers
      @trailsandbeers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FloraBeverley Me too, I wear the SG5 as my regular shoe as well as for running.
      Topo are the only other shoes I found that work for my feet.
      I used to use Inov-8 trail ultra for a long time but they reduced the width last year and are also not really cushioned enough for the longer distances I'm doing now.

  • @johngriffin7255
    @johngriffin7255 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If you run lots of muddy trails, choice is so limited, Inov8 mainly, and they are narrow, even the 4/5 width. Lugs on Hoka and Altra don't cut it. I have to cut a little slit where my little toes go, but I wear waterproof socks (shout out for Otters). Tell to make WIDER shoes with 8mm lugs, they'll sell well.

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes Inov8 all the way for British winters! I have 2 pairs that I love, but agree they could do with more width.

    Great video and thank you for sharing. I have been using Hoka's for 8 years now. They saved my knee and lower back issues. I have a wide foot, which was tough when I first started with Hoka's. But now since they've come out with wider versions, it's even better. I would suggest giving the Speedgoats a try before knocking them. They are the only trail shoe I use for 50K plus trail races in all types of terrain. I use the Challenger ATR's for shorter trail races and less rocky training runs. But to each their own, we all have our preferences. I ran a 50K trail race with the Speedgoats (before the wider versions), literally right out of the box. The course was steep and rocky, no blisters, foot issues or pain. Thank you for sharing your knowledge 👍

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว

      I tried the 'normal' width speedgoats and could barely fit my feet in them 💀 but think I will try the wide versions .5 size up & see how I get on! People seem to love them 😍

    Such a cool concept, like summer camp for adults! :) And those views & food!! I run in the Hoka Speedgoat 5's at the moment, and my problem with them is the toe box being narrow. I, like many women, have a more triangular-shaped foot with a wide ball of the foot and narrow heel, and I can't run in wide shoes to solve the problem (they are FAR too wide everywhere), but regular shoes are too narrow in the toe box, especially when my feet swell while running. I have yet to find a shoe that solves this problem (I road run in Brooks, and while it's less of an issue on the roads since you don't need so much lateral movement, it's still an issue), but I have heard good things about Altra...

    • @FloraBeverley
      @FloraBeverley  ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting! Do you have the 'wide' speedgoats or the normal ones? I found that they do them in 2 widths and I don't think the wide ones are as wide as properly wide shoes. And the mafates are wider than the normal speedgoats.
      Altras sound good except for the zero drop! 🫣

    • @aylaamon3267
      @aylaamon3267 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FloraBeverley I have the normal ones. My heel felt too loose in the wides. You're right, though, they aren't as wide as (e.g.) a Brooks in wide! I haven't tried the Altras yet, but they're on my list!

    • @FloraBeverley

      Yes, to an extent. Everyone had the option to join or leave the runs halfway through (perks of ski lifts!) If they don't feel up to the whole thing. And we did split the group once for different paces.
      But either way there's lots of stopping, chilling and waiting. Keeps it easy pace for us all!
