Ukraine passed a law in 2015 which criminalised criticsim of WWII Nazi organisations the OUN (Organisation of Ukrainian Nationals) and UPA (Ukrainian Insurgent Association) awarding them status of National Hero- See 'The Nation - Feb. 19, 2019 'NeoNazis & Hard Right Are on the March Again in Ukraine' . These two organisations had colluded with German Nazis to murder 80,000 Ukrainian Jews in WWII. (See also articles from the Simon Weisenthal Centre, Jerusalem Post and Times of Israel on Ukrainian government's support of Nazi groups. ) Not only is Azov officially incorporated into Ukraine's army, C14, the Youth Wing of the Svoboda Party has official capacity to undertake patrols with Ukrainian police. C14 has attacked LGBT bars and events and committed progroms on Ukraine's Roma, a particularly bad incident being the arson and attacks on a Kiev Roma camp in 2014. In December 2021 Zelensky awarded Right Sector member Dmytro Kotsyubaylo a national award. "By rights Dmytro Kotsyubaylo, nom de guerre Da Vinci, should be basking in glory. Last month the 26-year-old captain became the first living recipient serving in the ultra-nationalist Right Sector volunteer battalion to be awarded the title Hero of Ukraine by the country’s president." Times of London - 15 Jan. 2022. Not only this, Zelensky appointed the far-right Serhiy Sternenko as head of Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) in Odessa. Sternenko had overseen the appalling massacre of civilians at the Odessa Trade Union building in 2014. He was head of NeoNazi Right Sector at the time. The Donbass citizens formed militias following Azov's violent entry into Mariupol in 2014, shooting protesters, killing several. (See James Mates contemperaneous ITV footage). The Kiev government had downgraded the use of the Russian language at education facilities and closed Russian language television stations. Russian could not be used by those working with the public, if it was used the business owner was subject to fines. Many towns in the Donbass region have populations which speak only Russian. Alarmed at this and the very significant presence of NeoNazi groups Azov, Right Sector, Pravy Sector, Svoboda Party, C14 & more on the Maidan (often violently attacking Ukrainian Birkut police) Donbass citizens protested. Their fear of the NeoNazis stems from the fact that Donbass hosts a large ethnic Russian or Russian speaking population who, under the doctrine of these Nazi groups are deemed 'Untermenschen'. Please see Deutsche Welde, Euro News & other videos of NeoNazi violence on Maidan. In June 2014 after protests in Donbass, Kiev began its 8 year bombing campaign in which 1000s of civilians have been killed. Reporting from Donbass for the last 8 years have been Graham Philips, Anne-Laure Bonnel, George Eliason, Christelle Neant and more - all assiduously ignored by mainstream media. I contend that your piece attempts to apologise and even whitewash the presence and appalling crimes of the myriad of NeoNazi groups openly and blazeningly brandishing their symbols, their doctrine and worst of all their behaviour in Ukraine. Ukrainians who do not subscribe to their ideology will suffer should it not be exposed for what it is.
Zelensky was with with Azov Commander Denys Prokopenko who was freed from Turkey today (July 10, 2023). Along with 4 other Commanders of the group. This is directly from the New York Times. It seems the Azov Battalion sits just fine with Zelensky.

On the other, he could have called out Nazis for being Nazis, at the risk of being accused of a Putin supporter. Instead, he did the brave thing that historians ought to do. Felton told us the facts in their historical context and trusted his viewers to make their own conclusions. Bravo Dr. Felton.
He was a little soft on the matter. Bringing Azov into the official military did nothing to soften them (just as giving Nazis in Germany more power failed). Furthermore there are greater numbers than he reported. There is the little matter of Stepan Bandera supporters too. In short, in supporting Ukraine we are not helping freedom and democracy.
@@iainmrodgers9991 I agree with you, supporting Ukraine is not a matter of supporting freedom nor democracy and not merely because of the Azov Battalion but also the fashion in which the Ukrainian government has functions prior and since the current conflict since 2014. As a historian, he’s not required to avoid those sorts of judgements but there is no reason they ought to be his primary concern. That's why Ukraine (along with US) has been voting against UN resolution to condemn the use of Nazis symbols since many years ago, and every time after that. Last time Ukraine voted against this UN resolution was in 2021. Ukraine and US were the only two countries voted against this UN resolution. 130 voted for, and 51 abstained. US voted against this based on the ground of freedom of expression. Not sure what "reason" Ukraine came up with.
Ukraine banned the use and propaganda of Soviet and German national-socialist regime symbolic in 2015. I'd leave a proof link on official UA gov website but YT will remove it.
Freedom of expression? What a load of bullshit! Why would we want people to have the ability to express views from a nation we waged war against! It's treason!
It has gotten to the point where a lot of Azov members, when captured, are told to take off all their clothing to see if they have any Neo-Nazi tattoos. Because the majority of them do.
Why did you ignore that many present day German and French organizations use that ”Wolfangel” symbol ? As far as swastikas, Some members may have nazi beliefs, just as many or more use it to appear edgy and more Badass than the other guys. Just because our ’ol pal Hitler’s nazis hijacked symbols for evil purposes does not make the symbol evil for anybody else to use decades later.
Well, except for when he called the Euromaidan putsch a revolution It was the US-backed Neo-Nazi military coup in Kiev in 2014 that was orchestrated by Obama, Brandon, Victoria Nuland and those Neo-Nazis have been killing ethnic Russians, committing war crimes, and have been shelling Lugansk and Donetsk for the past 8 years killing 15k civilians.
"They claim it's just a combination of letters for Ukraine" really bold to say this about a logo that features a Black Sun, which was exclusively used by the SS.
You can find "black sun" and a lot of other controversial symbols tattooed on many russian nationalists. Those symbols been long adopted by slavic nationalists.
It's interesting how ancient symbols get recycled over the centuries. Hitler and the nazis took several symbols from the pagan past. The nazis lasted in power for maybe 15 years, and those symbols are still reviled to this day.
They didn't "take symbols" they used them because the majority of them were Vedic Pagans and anti-christian. Like many Nazi symbols, 'die Wolfsangel' has more than meaning. The actual heraldic device, also known as 'crampon', lacks the vertical bar. When the bar is added it is no longer 'die Wolfsangel' but a combination of runes H and I, a runic stave of the first two letters of the name 'HI tler'. It was used as the crest of the division SS 'Das Reich' which committed many atrocities, including the burning alive of over 600 inhabitants of the village Oradour-sur-Glane. This is the tradition dear to heart of the batallion 'Azov'. Not to forget that over 54 000 Ukrainian men volunteered to the SS in 1943.

Here someone wrote in the comments that Kolomoisky sponsors Azov. Kolomoisky is a Ukrainian semi-criminal oligarch. This information does not contradict the information that he can sponsor the Azov. A few years ago, he had personal power ambitions in Ukraine. But Victoria Nuland flew and talked to him. After that, he went into the shadows. And it is also possible that after that he became more active in sponsoring the Azov. After all, such radical formations are always used by US foreign policy to implement coups in third countries and suppress dissenters. Such a coup was in Ukraine in 2014. After that, the influence of radical nationalist groups increased in the life of this country. And this is the main reason why Crimea, Donbass and Sevastopol hastened to separate from Ukraine. Russia and the former republics of the USSR were very sympathetic to Donbass, because they also hate neo-Nazis. And also because since 2014, Donbass has been shelled by Ukraine. These are rockets, shells, mines and rockets with cluster warheads which scattered antipersonal mines (previous year over Donetsk - main city of Donbas territory). MSM is silent about this. In a begining (2014) it was even air dropped bombs. But Donbas people installed anti-air defense system (I think, with help of Russia). In answer, a Ukrainian air traffic controller brought a Malaysian Airlines passenger Boeing to the scene of this air defense. It was a mean and cruel revenge.
Anyone who looks up Maidan events/casualties in 2014 will see that pro-Russian government/police committed a massacre of 100+ pro-EU Ukrainian patriots in Kyiv, and then fled to Russia. Only a Russian Zombie would call this a “coup”. There is no point in your translation of BS stories from Russian Zombie TV. Russian terrorists led by FSB agent Girkin invaded Ukraine and opened fire on 04.12.2014 to imitate a “civil war” in Donbass. Then Azov was created in May, as a response to Russian invasion in Crimea and Donbass. Real neo-Nazis are the hordes of Russian sadists that invaded Ukraine according to Nazi cookbook, and already killed 500,000 people.
And of the funding of the Azov by Kolomoisky. And the Azov youth training camps, reminiscent of the Hitler youth. Also you failed to mention the incorporation of Azovs into the SBU. Also the NATO training and funding of the Azovs and subsequent training by Canadians. Your number of 900 is far too low. The right sector is also a neo-n,a,z,i organisation. You also need to explain the lineage of the Bandera movement from ww2 and how it is still the same organisation in Ukraine.
In short, Bandera was the leader of Ukrainian nationalist movement that worked closely with German Nationalists, so NSDAP. His army, UPA, did several slaughters on Polish people in the regions of Ukrainian majority. Akcja Wisła was an military operation done after WW2 that achieved it's goal of destroying UPA and partially moving Ukrainian people back within the borders of the Ukrainian SSR

Odd that such a usually thorough and detailed researcher would stumble right past, without noticing, the voluminous documentation, some of it by the BBC in addition to numerous western sources, detailing the ideological alignments intertwined with the usage of the symbolism, and expressed by Azov members, repeatedly.
He said many of them do share similar right winged/neo nazi beliefs in this very video so I hope your not referring to Mark Felton. Two things can be true at the same time regarding there being white nationalists with nazi ideologies as well as the fact that Putin used them as a catalyst in order to try to give some legitimacy or a facade of pure intentions to what was a blatant land grab of conquest. If you think there aren’t many neo nazis(even in prominent positions) in Russia you would be shocked.

Unless most of the ducks members joined beacuse it was an effective military unit not because of the founders ideology, and because those joining the duck were unaware of the meaning of the symbols the duck used (the wolffsangle is almost identical to a symbold on a coat of arms used by the Bielik house in 1601).
I wonder how much of this is “the enemy of my enemy” phenomenon…. Stalin starved several million Ukrainians before WW2. Seems logical some Ukrainians might harbor a deep hatred for the Soviet Union. Even going so far as to adopt the symbolism of their sworn enemy’s enemy.
nato has been supporting nassi groups since the end of ww2 to destabilizr/fight the soviet union/russia, stephan bandera's group in ukraine is one example.
they are just holding the nato flag because some of them may have been sent by them or to use it as a symbol of alliance between western countries, you mention 3 different things but in reality 2 of them are the exact same so you are exaggerating it.
00:34 The _wolfsangel_ ("wolf angler" or "wolf fisher") is a German heraldic device composed of three elements. It represents a wolf trap consisting of a barbed or sharp-bladed "z-shaped" piece of steel ( _Wolfshaken_ , or "Wolf's Hook") that was embedded in a lump of meat and hooked to an iron or steel chain ( _kette_ ). It was suspended from nearby tree limbs by a cresent- or fan-shaped blade ( _Wolfsanker_ , "Wolf's Anchor") with an eyelet in its base to secure the chain. A wolf would leap up and swallow the lump of meat and get it stuck in its gullet. The barbs or blades would keep the steel bit stuck in its throat until it died. The three elements of the _wolfsangel_ (hook, chain and anchor) are used as heraldic charges, but there are no examples of the complete item as a charge. The IRL Frankenstein family had a _wolfsanker_ as its coat of arms. The SA and SS unit insignia was a vertical or horizontal _wolfshaken_ . It was a popular symbol for foresters or _Jaeger_ units.
Just to add... the swastika is a near universal symbol in use for millennia before the short-lived Nazi regime. It is among the Vinca symbols, one of the earliest forms of writing, dating to 7,000 BCE. It can be found worldwide: on Buddhist temples in China, Hindu temples in India, Navajo pottery predating European contact, in medieval weight standards of the Ashanti in Africa, and even still adorns Greco-Roman temples all around the Mediterranean. In Poland and Ukraine, it was a common heraldic symbol for noble families. So it should not be surprising that they're comfortable with using it. People ought remember that Ukraine was devastated by the Nazis, so the idea that Ukrainians would embrace the symbol for its Nazi ties is odd to say the least. The Black Sun is far more esoteric, and many people incorrectly credit Heinrich Himmler with its creation. However, the Black Sun is an essential part of ancient alchemical teachings about the material body in death as part of the transition of humans to the afterlife. There are many designs representing the Black Sun, but Himmler chose one based on Zierschrieben jewelry commonly found in ancient Alemannian graves. It's unlikely that Himmler even understood its meaning, since it was typically only found in the graves of women. Frankly, we're all being a little childish about imbuing mere symbols with the power of fear such that we abandon all critical thought upon merely seeing one.

Media coverage of the conflict is inaccurate and unreliable you have to wait until the war is over to actually realize what happened because both sides will try to say things that aren't true and even then...
The exact numbers are set between 10-20 % of the Azov battalion. I wouldn`t call them nazis as it is very unlikely that the majority of them would be in the same mindset. There are also Russians, Belorusians and Chechens in the Azov battalion, helping Ukrainians since 2014 (and disagreeing with Pootin`s foreign and domestic politics). It was the same with the Nazi Germany, where people think all the Germans were Nazis, but the real truth was far from that.
The Ukrainians murdered the Poles not only in Wolyn (Volynya) in 1943. Koliivshchyna was a major haidamaka rebellion (the ancestors of the Ukrainians) that broke out in the Right-bank Ukraine in June 1768. The uprising was accompanied by violence against the members and supporters of the Bar Confederation, Poles, Jews and Roman Catholics and especially Uniate clergymen, culminating in the massacre of Uman. The number of victims is estimated from 100,000 to 200,000,
>1768 Nigga, bring some bible stories next time. Since the dawn of history men murdered each other, get over it. Nobody is clean. And you even glide over the fact that it was a mere response to the polish policies in the region, not even mentioning soviet provocation.
What is the true relation between Poles and Ukraineans? I know Poland are taking the refugees in, but given the past of Ukraine nationalists genociding Poles, I guess there would be tension. What seems to be common for the two is the hate towards Russians.

So then my dear George pray tell how it is you can tell? while you are at it please take the time to explain this. Werwolf (pronounced [ˈveːɐ̯vɔlf], German for "werewolf") was a Nazi plan which began development in 1944,[2] to create a resistance force which would operate behind enemy lines as the Allies advanced through Germany, in parallel with the Wehrmacht fighting in front of the lines. It is widely misconstrued as having been intended to be a guerrilla force to harass Allied forces after the defeat of Germany, but this misconception was created by Joseph Goebbels through propaganda disseminated through his "Radio Werwolf", which was not actually connected in any way with the military unit. It is strange how Mark Felton chose to over look this don't you think?
@George Rockwell was a saint Can you write anything intelligent or is that your limit? For example Dietrich Bonhoeffer argued that stupid people are more dangerous than evil ones. This is because while we can protest against or fight evil people, against stupid ones we are defenseless - reasons fall on deaf ears. Bonhoeffer’s famous text, which we slightly edited for this video, serves any free society as a warning of what can happen when certain people gain too much power. Also the first time I've seen that photo (3:42) described as "purportedly" the Azov Battalion, and I suppose the other myriad pictures of Azov fighters with Swastikas and SS bolts are all also conveniently "purported." I don't know why the historical link to the obvious neo-Nazi SNA is always ignored, if not for political reasons. This isn't to vindicate Putin's "de-Nazification" claim. Russia too has a big neo-Nazi problem. The Russian Imperial Legion, a revival of the anti-Semitic Black Hundreds, which today embraces Neo-Nazism, has participated heavily on the Russian side of the conflict. And though secretive, the Wagner mercenary group is also likely a neo-Nazi outfit, as it's alleged founder was a Nazi skinhead who apparently named the group in honor of Richard Wagner (A favorite of Hitler and the Nazis) . It is at least known that the "Rusich" unit of Wagner is openly neo-Nazi. The reality is that neo-Nazism is a symptom of the whole post-Soviet region and era, where ultranationalist sentiment has become influential, whether Russian, Ukrainian, etc.
Konstanty Gebert resigned last week from Poland's Gazeta Wyborcza, a left of center newspaper, for refusing to tone down his description of Azov as neo-Nazi and replace it, after editors insisted, with "far right."

The Donbass citizens formed militias following Azov's violent entry into Mariupol in 2014, shooting protesters, killing several. (See James Mates contemperaneous ITV footage). The Kiev government had downgraded the use of the Russian language at education facilities and closed Russian language television stations. Alarmed at this and the very significant presence of NeoNazi groups Azov, Right Sector, Pravy Sector, Svoboda Party, C14 & more on the Maidan (often violently attacking Ukrainian Birkut police) Donbass citizens protested. Felton told us the facts in their historical context and trusted his viewers to make their own conclusions. Bravo Dr. Felton.
He was a little soft on the matter.
Bringing Azov into the official military did nothing to soften them (just as giving Nazis in Germany more power failed).

Like many Nazi symbols, 'die Wolfsangel' has more than meaning. The actual heraldic device, also known as 'crampon', lacks the vertical bar. It was used as the crest of the division SS 'Das Reich' which committed many atrocities, including the burning alive of over 600 inhabitants of the village Oradour-sur-Glane.
Thanks for the info!

The Ukrainians murdered the Poles not only in Wolyn (Volynya) in 1943.

The uprising was accompanied by violence against the members and supporters of the Bar Confederation, Poles, Jews and Roman Catholics and especially Uniate clergymen, culminating in the massacre of Uman. All moot when the real fascists are shooting civilians in the back of the head and throwing them in mass graves. Or deporting people to Russia against their will. When the war is over, the Ukrainians can deal with their right wing issue, until then, they have more important things to worry about.
Kraken, Aidar, PRaviy SEktor...
I've been waiting for this one!
Edit: I feel like maybe this video deserves a part two, where you could maybe explore some of the other badges worn by the Ukranian military.
For example, I've seen some wearing the Svoboda party-logo or the flag of the Ukranian Insurgent Army, a black and red badge.
I'm sure there are a few others I've forgotten here.
People focus on the Azov Battallion, as though they are the only right wing extremists in Ukraine. They are not, far from it. Even if their number was not so great, it is their influence which is important. The Nazis in Germany weren't so big to start off with, but their violence and political will brought them to power. It should never be allowed to happen again.
We should get a video on the Wagner group too ;)
@@LesykZ - absolutely! nobody is saying they aren't bad - we're saying that two things can be bad at the same time and one of those things is Nazis

There's no mistaking the nazi salute, no matter what convoluted explanation is provided, that salute can never be mistaken for anything other than what it is. Can you talk about the SS Galicia and how the people of that region still dress up as SS and honor those SS troops.
I'm from Galychyna, dumbfuckistan, no one dresses as SS troops or honors them, except for a bunch of retarded dickheads, just as every country has those.

Imagine yourself in their position? Not from your perspective, where you have access to all the information of past 100 years, and the war atrocities. But a perspective of someone living there in late 30s, oppressed and being made into minority on your own land (where your ancestors lived); warld war is breaking out the WHOLE PLANET is being changed; from the east the communist/russians are pushing, a force considered to be enemies of your people; from the west nazis/germans are pushing (and doing that quicker), an unknown powerful force that will fight communist.
You are expected to choose a side.

No that guy didn't create Azov Regiment. He financed a bunch of voluntary groups, most notably Dnipro-1 batallion. Arsén Avákov is the mind behind Azov and many other powerful groups and entities in the Ukranian state.

Buffalo shooter had same symbolic as Azov. And it is undeniably white supremacist. Mark, any comments?
Many of the Azov Battalion members sport nazi tattoos also. Thanks Mark!
I've seen photo's of barracks overrun by pro-Russian forces in Mariupol and they literally had a portrait of Hitler hanging on the wall, German NSDAP flags as well as war flags and one guy even made a detailed engraving of the eagle with swastika into a large peace of wood.
Seems legit man
But they’re “not Nazis”. 🤣🤣🤣
Just symbols of peace if you ask the Ukraine supporters, nothing to worry about.
I've seen corpses of russian soldiers with swastika tattoos, they are not better
Ya, because Russia would have no reason to lie about that after the atrocities they've committed...
Such a valuable research! Thanks!

Symbols change their meaning over time... a symbol only means what society believes it represents.
@@ogzombieblunt4626 indeed, we all know what swastika means. it certainly isn't about old tribal freedoms.
@@mamutakada Does it have to stay that way? How many hundreds or thousands of years need to pass before the swastika (or any other symbols used by the SS or NSDAP) becomes just another arbitrary symbol again? I personally find it very unreasonable how Europeans aren't capable of letting go of certain talking points, stigmas and certain histories even after almost a century has passed. Enough wallowing in moral outrage and self-pity, it's almost like ww2 hasn't ceased to this day due to the charged, primitive emotional reactions attached to that minuscule span of time in history. Enough is enough, that's what i think and the adult reaction would be to let go.
So this another "enemy of my enemy is my friend" situation? Yeah that totally worked out well for the West with the Mujahideen in the 80s and the Soviets in the 40s, what could possibly go wrong?
There will be massive blowback from pumping so many arms into the hands of Ukrainians, many are already being smuggled and sold on dark web
Russia has Mariupol completely surrounded: seems like this is a situation that will resolve itself while tying up a very disproportionate number of Russian troops. All's well that ends well.
Lmao Zelensky should be concerned given the past behavior of the US propping up leaders and using them as pawns only to go attack them a decade or so later.
Mujahideen? Soviets? Both of them were used as means to an end. America didn't help the Soviets, it's the Soviets who helped America getting it's only victory in history. Mujahideen were defending their homes, they didn't need US help. They were winning just like the Soviets in WW2, Americans love to get credited for victories that they have no merit.

Unbiased? Felton mentions nothing about the Bandera, Tryzub and other symbols and there were 3 times as many as 900 Azov's in Mariupol alone. The whole presentation was white wash.

Okay that's Azov Battalion. right. What's about other Batalions with same thematic? There was 30+ of them at some point and... let's just say Azov not worst of them.
