Dragon Age: Inquisition definitely holds a special place in my heart. I appreciate the time and dedication you put into your content, your insight is always great to hear. It's fairly evident a lot of work goes into making a demo "demo-able" when cutting it from a development build. Is this usually accounted for when estimating timelines for dev effort, or is it often forgotten?

    • @MarkDarrah

      errr.
Often demo tax isn't factored in.

Inquisition was my introduction into gaming. While the game isn't perfect, even so many years later it's still my favourite. There's a big chance that if it was any other game - i might have never picked up this hobby.
So from the bottom of my heart - bless all of you for this gift. I consistently replay dragon age series every year.

I really do feel bad whenever I kill dragons in DAI, the sound design just makes them sound so sad and scared. Plus, sometimes the dragons lived in very remote areas and didn't seem to be doing harm to people, so for those I really had trouble finding a reason why I'd want to kill them.

Fascinating video Mark. I do have to say, you guys kinda oversold the Mage Templar war, in the game it's just some fighting NPCs who both attack you on sight in the Hinterlands and then there's that early story quest in Redcliffe that resolves it. And then it's done lol.

Re 'designer hugs' - I have to say I really love how interesting and alive all the areas feel in this game. Whether it was stumbling across an odd skeleton with a clear love of cheese or seeing a pack of wolves chase down a halla, I always felt like I was discovering new things. The areas felt rich and full. A highlight that sticks in my memory was finding a haunted mansion in the Emerald Graves. It was not on the map nor part of a quest log, I just found it during exploration and was rewarded with a brilliant atmospheric piece of environmental story telling. Its a shame Mass Effect Andromeda didn't get the chance to build their environments in the same way (no judgement to the dev team, they did great with what they were allowed). But I felt more like an explorer as my Inquisitor than my Ryder. Sometimes I log into DA:I just to wanderer around the beautiful areas. Truly wonderful :)

I thought mounts in Inquisition was a little bit of a tease really. I felt that since we had them I expected to be able to do mounted combat with them too. But, fortunately, that wasn't something the AI did either. I ended up rarely actually using mounts in my playthrough's after all that. I think I had to actually get off my mount in order to actually do anything, and I guess I was more 'afraid' of the concept of missing something as a consequence of faster movement. I think the desert map is the one area where I actually used it.
I really liked the Fade Rifts and their mechanic. I liked how you could even 'A' them even in the midst of combat and that tears off a chunk of the demon health and I think stuns them, but I think you can only do that once. I think the only disappointing thing about it though is that new Demon subtypes were added despite I think the first two games saying that these are the types, etc, etc - Fear, Rage, Pride and Desire (and I always, always thought of them along the terms of the Chaos Gods of Games Workshop's Warhammer series). Now we had Terror demons - (I think; it has been a while so their actual names do escape me atm) etc, etc. Although the different demons were good for diversifying combat encounter designs.
As to the actual combat design itself, I have always been slightly disappointed when a game gives me say 20 abilities (for arguments sake), but I can only map say 8 to buttons. I realize that this is a conceit of a controller, and I don't think it's a bad idea to be able to assign your favourite skills to these buttons, but with the introduction of the tactics system, I always felt like the AI could eventually play the characters better than I could. I think Mass Effect 3 had a great system (from memory). You had the radial menu, but then you had the arrows to extend the radial which of course, eventually gave you the ability to choose what you want. You could also target lock something and then angle your shots to hit them from behind cover. Fantastic for Pull effects etc. I think Inquisition could have benefited from this system as well.

Just as an observation, we did get Hunger demons as far back as DA Awakening, so it's not like the new types were some retcon to add diversity in DAI. I think it'd be quite restrictive to try and fit the DA demons into only a handful of boxes when they are originated from human emotion.

Watching this demo again, one thing I really wish Dreadwolf implements is a better AI system overall, but specially for allies. I can't tell how many times the game "forced" me to take control of my ranged companions because they were intentionally walking straight into enemies faces.
The tac cam really helped with keeping that sort of thing from happening, but if BioWare decides to not have a Tac Cam for DA:D, we are really going to need some sort of enhanced AIs.

I know you guys have probably already thought of this, but I’d suggest a way to make the dragons less sympathetic is by demonstrating they are dangerous threats to the local people. For example, set up a scenario where the dragon is burning local villages in the area. You could show this either directly, with the dragon attacking, or show the aftermath and have a poor survivor tell the tale of the evil dragon. Because in Inquisition, it often feels like you are just hurting dragons minding their own business.

Here’s something I’ve been thinking about playing Origins again, (I understand it’s probably too late if they haven’t done this)and I wish they’d fix, Bioware are basically punishing players for not picking rogues as starter classes, the amount of locked chests you see up until getting Leliana, both in Highever and Ostagar, Your mother, Daveth, both could of been given the lockpick skill, climbing the tower, a rogue should of been given if you have the dog, a rogue and mage should of been given if you don’t have the dog. I for definitely used the tactical camera, I’d use it all the time to pull out archer or mages from the focus of the fight, for some reason I prefer the human noble warrior in Origins but it maybe DA2 that pulled me into using a mage and thus my Inquisitor was a mage

I was very active in the Dragon Age community from the moment Dragon Age was first announced back in 2004 or so. And Inquisition's dialogue system was a very important moment for BioWare, because it was (for me) the first time the voiced protagonist had actually worked.
As a long-time player of CRPGs, I have firm ideas about how I like to play, and for me the central part of a roleplaying game is my development of my character. I decide what he wants and why, and I decide what he does. And while BioWare's silent protagonist CRPGs were exceptionally good at allowing this, I found the systems used in Mass Effect and Dragon Age 2 incredibly jarring, as this character of whom I was ostensibly in control would repeatedly say things I hadn't seen coming. How can I be the one determining Hawke's or Shepard's mental state if she keeps surprising me?
As I saw it, Inquisition really was a make-or-break moment for BioWare. If the conversation system disrupted my roleplaying, I was probably done playing new games (I did not anticipate the later renaissance of silent protagonist games like Pathfinder: Kingmaker), but Inquisition's writers somehow managed to thread that needle, and I applaud them for it.
My point being, I think it was appropriate to focus so much on the dialogue in the demo.

    • @SylviusTheMad
      @SylviusTheMad 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Though, for my money, the best new feature in Inquisition was that Total War-style tactical camera. I played every combat with the tactical camera (with the exception of when I was cheesing the dragons at extreme range).
I don't think enough players even know how the tac cam worked, though. I remember complaints about features being absent from the game (like point-and-click interaction with objects at range), but those features were in the game when the tac cam was active.
