I'm Mark Darrah. Let's Talk Games. I worked at BioWare from 1997 to 2021

Listen to someone with over 20 years of experience.
I worked at BioWare for 23 years. All of that directly in game development.
Turns out you can apply a lot of the lessons I learned to your everyday
From 1997 until 2008 I worked as a programmer, focused mostly on gameplay systems
From 2007 until 2021 I was an Executive Producer, leading projects
And yes, those 2 periods do overlap
Games I worked on (That were released):
Baldur's Gate (1998)
Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast (1999)
Baldur's Gate II (2000)
Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal (2001)
Neverwinter Nights (2002)
Jade Empire (2005)
Mass Effect (2007)
Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood (2008)
Dragon Age: Origins (2009)
Dragon Age II (2011)
Dragon Age: Inquisition (2014)
Mass Effect: Andromeda (2017)

Looking forward to whatever you have planned with 2025. Whether that is more videos or games!
Hopefully this year made it obvious what we don't want in games. But since it takes many years to make a game we won't see those changes next year.
Lead times do make change happen in weird ways and often lagging one trend behind
I'm definitely more hopeful for next year than I was for this year. On a personal level, things are looking up again.
Great to hear!
I do hope the industry remembers how to do something other than a live service game. As an old fart I've recently been called entitled, immature, and GamerTM for daring to offer measured, polite criticism, so I don't have a lot of hope that the industry is listening, but at least I got under someone's skin. So here is hoping that everyone has a good New Year, and that the industry makes a pivot back to listening to it's customers.
A lot of the issue is that in live services each “customer” is of different value So you just listen to the 1000$ ones
@@MarkDarrah The difficulty with that model is that if you don't have the small fish that the whales can flex over then the whales loose interest and go elsewhere. I guess there needs to be a happy medium.
Good luck on every endeavor or yours for the upcoming year, thanks for your work Mark !
Happy new year!
I sincerely hope you are right that our long live service nightmare might finally be coming to an end, but my fear is that gaming execs' faith in napkin math is a hope that springs eternal.
You may be right. And it only takes one success to do all these failures
Happy New Year, Mark! Thank you for your continued insights, candor, and all of the hard work you've put in over the years. Definitely seems like so much has coalesced around the same time to resurface complex feelings. Even so, I'm looking forward to whatever you end up cooking up in the new year. Another day, another chance! 🎉
Thank you!!!
Thank you for believing in the gaming industry. Ater countless failed launches and failed games, I hope executives realize that it's them, not the audience, as they have essentially lead the gaming industry to where it is today. I hope in the new year, execs give all game developers room to breathe and allow trust. Also, thank you so much to you and the BioWare team for Veilguard. I know there was an internal battle to ship the game as a single-player game, and I can only imagine how many other internal battles there were, so thank you for fighting. Much love, happy new year, and looking forward to seeing where it takes you Mark! Take care of yoursef.
We'll see what 2025 looks like
First of all i wish u and ur folks A HAPPY NEW YEAR🎉🎉🎉 we will see what comes, like every year....a new game would be great❤ but it have to feels right, so, what feels right, is the path to go😁 wish just the best, what ever cones🎉🎉🎉
Happy new year!!
Thank you for your hard work and happy new year!
Thank you! Happy new year to you too.
I think 2024 has shown us that live service games will simmer down in the future. Too many of these have flopped after massive investment. Veilguard started as live-service, and pivoted to single-player, which was much to its benefit.
The seams are still showing in DAVe.
@@MarkDarrah For sure. Some things were noticeably sacrificed. But I did really like the sheer volume of outfit choices. My guess is there would not have been that many had it started as a single player game. Combat was fast and flashy (using OP builds). With some additional tweaking it could have really shined. Most people lament not having a controllable squad, but I remember ally AI always being an issue on harder difficulties throughout past DA games. Plus, its easier to balance combat with 1 playable character vs 3 or 4.
Or ya know make good games that don't have personal agendas.....Mark you have been part of the problem. I hope you look i. The mirror but honestly it doesn't sound like it. You are complaining that is feels like 2016 again. An obvious jab at the the incoming 47th and former 45th president Donald Trump. Like him or not your peers voted him in. You joining Blue Sky says to me "I want an echo chamber and I my what to be around those that validate my personal views"... If you want real change. You have to accept not everyone thinks like you do. That In fact the majority probably doesn't agree with you. I knew Dragon Age the Vielguard would not achieve be the success required. You blindly disagreed. Honestly, Ray Charles could have seen that coming..... I don't care about your sexuality, or that if anyone that isn't my personal partner. Adults can adult each other all the want. The thing is pushing this crap on kids and young teens that are confused enough has to stop. I know so many that have said "I'm such or such because they want to fit in so badly and that's it .... Some have ruined their lives trying to live out such fantasies. So how about some real introspection Mark? Believe it or not I've followed your entire career. Because deep down I know you and many that have come and gone from Bioware can make fantastic games. But letting your own poltics, beliefs, and "spreading" "The Message" has blinded you to your own folly and hubris. Get your self together. Really....not this is pathetic deflection of a video either. The choice is yours.....become irrelevant or lead others to greatness. I hope you choose the latter. Make fun , entertaining games....in essence Make gaming great again. Signed, A 48 year old Gamer that started on C64 and Atari 2600.
LOL
People join Bluesky because they are tired of constant hatred and stupidity.
@@MarkDarrah Greybeard with toys on the shelf can't come at his critics with an intelligent argument. And you can't even organize it in an aesthetic manner. You couldn't bother to learn anything about this after 30 years working in a visual media? Pure game designers are such hacks. This is also why your merch doesn't move. The idea that you'd even have merch is amusing on its own. Nobody knows who you are!
happy new year :)
Happy new year!
Short and to the point, but still quality advice. Best wishes for the new year🫡
Thanks, and the same to you!
Taking profuse notes with one hand (while composing the most obnoxious and virulent tweet with the other)
Lol
I liked DAV, but I wish Bioware would return to the concept of DA2. Just focusing on one place, with stories that are more than just saving the world or defeating the bad guy. I think overall DAO or DAI are better games, but DA2's narrow focus makes it my favorite.
I guess we will see what the future brings
TH-cam did not recommend me this video i missed my chance to wish you a Merry Christmas 😅
Thank you!
Here's some structural positive feedback: It's because of focusing on this bull crap rather than Dragon Age, did we get such a subpar DEI riddled product.
Incorrect. Also, you have an amazingly inaccurate view of who was in charge of what on DA.
@MarkDarrah care to elaborate sir. 😊
I’ll preface this by saying I don’t know if Veilguard was a hit. It may have found a large audience and if so, great. It missed the mark for me despite trying pretty hard to get into it, and really liking the previous games. This is not coming from an anti-woke place; I always fall on the side of decency and inclusion. Bad feedback: I don’t like Veilguard. Good feedback. As an elder millennial, the art style and tone felt immature and it ultimately was a barrier to establishing a connection to the characters or story. It felt like it was aimed at YA or adults that love Disney, which is fine but not compelling for me. The combat was good mechanically but wasn’t to my preference (I don’t tend to like JRPG style graphics and boss fights). I almost want to say it felt a bit MMOish, too, but it was also beautiful so I don’t know what exactly I’m trying to articulate here. It just wasn’t a greatly mature game IMO. The content was mature but the delivery lacked in a few ways that I couldn’t get beyond.
Seeing that you created this acronym, would you call yourself an...Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. mentality?
Unfortunately yes
Is it just mi or audio is desync?
It is possible. I have had this issue before but never been able to figure out a cause
For "Engaging" feedback, I've found that asking questions can be a great way to get people to act on constructive feedback without digging in their heels too much or you being prescriptive. E.g. "What happens under X case? How does this connect with Y system?" Then they come to the conclusion on their own without the "cost" of you giving feedback
Excellent advice
Great framework for feedback. Sometimes it's inevitable when people get stuck, but engaging them in problem solving is key imo, otherwise it's just disempowering and makes the person wait for a solution instead of working on it on their own.
Absolutely
Really it's not just giving feedback, but receiving it too, training people into establishing a protocol such that both party know what to expect, and distance personal feeling
Indeed. Some art programs prepare people for feedback
@MarkDarrah and merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤
@@MarkDarrah Oh Mark, thank you. I will send this video to a studio owner around your age, who last week absolutely destroyed our student teams with "this is crap", "yall are either stupid or delusional" and so on. It was like looking at a guy enter a children sports tournament and hitting everyone screming "get gud".
Merry christmas 🎅🎅🎅🎅
Ho ho ho
Do you think that games have been simplified too much in the last decade? We don't even get any hard puzzles or things like what we did in 2000/2010, is it a thing about genre shifting or more like a creative thing? too much hand-holding? 🤔
I think the internet has been bad for puzzles 1. Answers too easy to get 2. Too easy to criticize a puzzle for "moon logic"
This is why I'm ignoring all the gripping about Veilguard - some people hated this game on release and yet a lot don't now.
There was a massive swing on DA2. Not surer what we will see on DAVe
your twt clues would've killed in kpop fandom. those fuckers find everything.
0:40 I think you have confused biases with mental shortcuts and perception filtering. Mental shortcuts and filtering is what allows our brain to process and analyze information without being overwhelmed by too much input or too many variables. Biases are a side effect of those shortcuts and filtering that lead to us filter out important information if it doesn't fit the template we used to and replace it with something more familiar but (potentially) inaccurate and even incorrect. Which brings me to the possible reason why not many people wanted to watch your videos on biases and fallacies. You are a game developer and thus people want to learn from you about the subject, since you have experience and recognition in the area. But biases and fallacies aren't really your area of expertise. As you said yourself, there are many people (psychologists, scientists and even debate-bros) who have a lot more knowledge and experience in the matter - so that's people whom other people will watch to learn about that.
Fair enough
Well this aged like milk.
Nah
How many secrets does Anthem hold? And why is there Urgoth Prison right next to Fortress of Dawn? Also i like Mathewmathosic line about Dark Souls. "I always get the impression that Miazaki has a lot more answers for a world of Dark Souls that he ever give to anyone" So tell me the secret, Mark or i go to the Heart Of Rage and kill the Monitor. NOW!
Do it!!!!
@@MarkDarrah Its against jedi... i mean... freelancer way! I shouldnt.
I really enjoy da 2 I forgot how much I loved playing it I did run through of the trilogy before veilguard came out and I probably ha£ the most fun playing this one hearing how yous had just over a year to develop it yous done an amazing with such a short time
Thank you
I’m curious how you would square posting hints/secrets online with hype culture. I’m sure we could all find stories where a community/subreddit overreacted to something someone innocuously posted online (kind of like GTA VI and the moon, recently), and when it turns out to be nothing OR something fans didn’t want, the enthusiasm becomes frustration and, at worst, harassment. I can’t think of a specific example, but I want to say that I’ve heard some devs say that they don’t post online or they limit their interactions with fans for this reason. A silly tweet blows up, people obsess over it, and it becomes an annoyance/source of harassment for a few days online. How should devs handle that kind of thing? Sorry for the long question haha love your videos!!
Yeah this can be an issue. The bigger the obsession of the core the bigger the danger. The end result is less of this gets posted which isn’t what the core wants
An intriguing thought, I never considered game developers throw in mysteries they don't want solved.
I’m not convinced they are even thinking in these terms so much as “ha ha this is funny/cool”
@@MarkDarrah That's not necessarily a bad thing either lol.
I do remembet that in old game, i could sniff out secrets in level design just with pacing. Old game tried to maximised grid layout, so you could very much find things just by feeling the grid 😂 I felt vindicated in mario 3, when in the sky bonus zone i guessed there was a one up in the air, at the end of the level, and that was on no Walkthrough guide of the time. Finding secrets encourage creativity and cognitive plasticity, it build confidence.
That is a very good point
Secrets can bring communities together, letting them get invested in solving whatever mystery they think you’ve set up. I mean, look at the Fnaf franchise or any game by Daniel Mullins or even Dark Souls, to some extent. If done well, it can be utilised to get people talking about your game when it launches, or even keep talking about it for a long time afterwards.
Abnsolutely
So these tweets were a countdown (17*2, 3*11, 8*4, and so on...) to August 2020 (if I'm not mistaken). Mass Effect Legendary Edition was announced on November 2020. Was the announcement supposed to happen 2 mos before that?
Right thing wrong announcement
@@MarkDarrah also you left BioWare in december 2020... and there was first infodump on DA4 in august (behind the scene video). smth right?
@@MarkDarrahKinda seems like the timeline lines up with when Dragon Age 4 got rebooted? So possibly an announcement of a release a few months after that, giving a bit more than 3 years of development time to make that window? Not sure if that makes sense bc any delays would have messed with the timing, but maybe it's flexible enough and nice to have a monthly reminder of a long term project. Potentially December 4th, 2020 release for D4 day?
Bottom line, you're too clever for your own good. 😜 I keep seeing folks say the "puzzles" in Veilguard are "too easy," while I'm running around trying to figure out not only how to find one of the chests I need for completion of an area, but also how to access the damn thing once I find it. Yeah, sure, some are easy (which I appreciate), but some were really tricky! (Although I am so glad there were no audio puzzles. I still remember getting so stumped by those in Myst/Riven because of my audio processing issues).
The crit path puzzles are easy but they basically have to be. The others aren’t as easy… The tool box of components may be a little empty…
@@MarkDarrah me constantly getting stumped by statue orientation puzzles because of my left-right weakness.
This is more of an Easter Egg than a Secret(tm), but my favorite is still in Dishonored, where the male announcer is replaced by a female announcer voiced by Carrie Fisher in the event that he is killed. It requires you to realize the announcer is an actual in-world NPC, not just a mechanic of the game, find his location, AND kill him. Then surprise! You get Carrie Fisher.
That's amazing
