IMHO, the best era to model since basically anything was possible. Lashups and consists were so colorful and varied, especially for a kid who was 7 when Conrail was formed.
As always, great footage guys. That time period was very interesting. And Big Mike, its always a pleasure to hear your "tongue in cheek" narrative. Keep em coming gentlemen.
Love these, really do! I just wish you would lower the cost a little to $20 each, and not $30, and offer a digital download. Maybe even a bundle. Big Mike is by far the smartest, most entertaining man I have listened to when it comes to railroading. So knowledgeable and the type of guy you would want to hang out with as often as possible to hear the ol tales of the rails.
I'm a conductor for bnsf Railroading seemed soo much fun back then.... now we are over worked zombies who went in loving the job to not really caring it's sad still love trains but ehhhhh tired of everything they are trying to pull right now
This footage came at the height of Jimmy Carter's part in the undermining of America, so much of what you saw in the video with the dirty and rusty equipment was just a part of the dystopian era of the 70's in general. With shrinking trackage and closing depots, it was really a dark time for the railroads in the U.S.A. but for some reason it still has a draw in hindsight, especially when you consider the amount of different class 1 railroads still in operation at that time. Today, albeit cleaner and more policed, we're down to a mere handfull of what once was a vast system of railroad interchange that used to spread across nearly every county of the fruited plain. Some railroads are being rejuvenated or reborn from the weeds while other shorelines become entangled in a battle for survival.
washing the equipment????????... geez this place was FORTUNATE to even have ANY equipment still up and running... you gotta remember this was the time when conrail was freshly formed with SIX bankrupt railroads... all of this could have easily been washed down the drain rather than being revitalized... so this stuff while dirty for sure is more of a economic miracle than anything
@@25mfd And then there’s the trackage! So many of these 70’s videos show trains on mainline rails that were in such deplorable shape that the engines and cars rocked so much side to side that they looked like they’d turn over, and I guess often did! It was truly a remarkable and sad time for the northeastern roads!
Slammed the thumbs up before I even started watching. This stuff is gold. Long live big Mike.
Big Mike...say no more...
No complaints...

Mikes an awesome dude always enjoyed lookin at the cool shots of the LVRR, RDG , PC and CR
Great to see the third generation Diesels in original paint. How I wish this equipment was around today! Great narration.

One of the best collages ive seen in quite some time. I'm revelling on seeing them altogether. Look forward to more like this one. Well done!!
This is back when railroading had real character. Love the narration!!!
I really enjoy these.
I have read about Ed Minsky in Mike's Books. He sounds just like I imagined he would!
Enjoying every moment of this train footage. Love both narrations. The second narrator reminds me of Uncle Joe from Petticoat Junction. Awesome 😀. 🚂
Loved seeing the ice flowing down the Susquehanna near the start of this piece. Liked the MOW footage too.
Love the videos. The commentary is awsome
Uncommonly good transfer from Super 8. I thought it might have been commercial grade video or 16mm.
Nice video! I like the classic Conrail footage of the 1970’s a lot! Really nice!
Hell I saw guys get on/off moving equipment all the time! Never knew that was against the Rules.
Penn Central and Conrail.....oh, memories of Kingston NY!❤❤❤
Treasure Trove of some Awesome Power!!!!
Learned so much watching these videos and listening to Big Mike!!
Thank God for the Bednars.
Hows Big Mike doing these days?
Excelente video
Really like the guy narrarating this, you know he know"s his stuff. Is there a better sound than one of these engines struggling to pull a heavy load?

Is Big Mike still alive?
Yes. He just finished narration for an upcoming new release
Didn't anyone wash their equipment back then? Filthy old stuff.
Wonderful, filthy old stuff! Much better than wall to wall wide cabs!
Penn Central sure didn't! I bet I could count the number of times I saw a clean PC diesel on one hand!
