i was part of a bob lind "cult" in the late 60's. we analyzed his songs and listened to his albums over and over and wondered at some of the deep hidden meanings like people did with dylan, the beetles, and buffoonalo springfield. since then have learned my faves on guitar etc. and enjoy singing them. this is one of the first songs i learned, a pretty easy C, Am, F, and G the whole way through but it works. bob's songs still touch me and this is one of the best.
I am amazed Bob Lind didn't have another hit, he is such a talented singer and songwriter and his lyrics are like poetry. I love the full version of Elusive Butterfly as well. Sadly, Elusive Butterfly was covered by too many easy listening singers, especially in Britain.
Well the sun rises behind you when you walk a westbound road And the light sometimes reminds you of someone you used to know She had eyes that used to touch you like no eyes you ever knew But there's something about a highway changes sunshine into dew Well the darkness is leaving as the sun comes to the sky And the dew clings to the barley as the tears come to your eyes As the night like all your friendships must come to meet their ends You think about the good times drinking coffee with your friends You see the shadows of your past, it was too beautiful to last And the highway keeps on calling you to follow And the echoes in your mind are fading slowly into time But you can't look back and still face your tomorrow When a city cannot hold you there is always somewhere else But if you think you'll stop your moving, you are lying to yourself And you look through picture windows and see families in their homes But as long as there's a highway....you will walk alone You will walk alone All alone and by yourself down the dirty lonesome road the sun is coming up behind you And everything you see by the highway always has a sad, sad way to remind you...
I find it interesting that how the Beatles were so great, but no one ever mentions their songs as being "their song." It's always other groups or singers.
Elusive Butterfly had too many mediocre cover versions by easy listening artists. The rare full-length version is a fantastic song and it is a shame a studio recording of the full version doesn't exist.
This is the only other song on the "Elusive Butterfly" album that really stands the test (although the recording here sounds a little sluggish, compared with the LP?). Except for the line about "coffee with friends" it is good poetry. I like the background "wall of sound", it is full-sounding instead of just one musician and a guitar in the studio.
Thanks for your honesty. Wow all you read is praise and no realism on TH-cam, though I'm sure everyone is being honest. His other good song from another album, better than this, is Black Night. Yeah the wall of sound came from Paul Spector's vet Jack Nitzsche.
As a 14 yr old ,this Genius taught me to analyze songs & life in a Magical way!
One of the best Lyrics in music! A genius !
Bob Lind was a Genius. Never got the recognition ! I will now chase the BUTTERFLY !
Simple and beautiful a song you wish you had written
Summer of '66, and these songs brought me great joy. Thanks.
Love me some Bob Lind, any day, any time. Most under appreciated folk singer of the '60s.
Beautiful...
I just love his songs, discovering his music song by song

Can't say enough for all His beautiful songs.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BOB....LOVE ALL YOUR ALBUMS....HOPE YOU ARE FIND THIS DAY...
Well the sun rises behind you when you walk a westbound road
And the light sometimes reminds you of someone you used to know
She had eyes that used to touch you like no eyes you ever knew
But there's something about a highway changes sunshine into dew
Well the darkness is leaving as the sun comes to the sky
And the dew clings to the barley as the tears come to your eyes
As the night like all your friendships must come to meet their ends
You think about the good times drinking coffee with your friends
You see the shadows of your past, it was too beautiful to last
And the highway keeps on calling you to follow
And the echoes in your mind are fading slowly into time
But you can't look back and still face your tomorrow
When a city cannot hold you there is always somewhere else
But if you think you'll stop your moving, you are lying to yourself
And you look through picture windows and see families in their homes
But as long as there's a highway....you will walk alone
You will walk alone
All alone and by yourself down the dirty lonesome road the sun is coming up behind you
And everything you see by the highway always has a sad, sad way to remind you...
I have always liked Elusive Butterfly but it's nice to hear his other stuff. This song has a nice feel to it. Excellent.
