Dude, you are a legend. I was so confused why my DT 770 Pros sounded so weird after replacing my pads (the mids were way too forward, and the sub-bass disappeared). Turns out I received the 990 grey velour pads instead of the 770 ones (the 770 are grey on the back, while the 990 ones are black on the back). Like and sub deserved.

I tried 4 different pads on my headphones. My findings match your statements about the different materials 1 : 1.
    - Fully closed synthetic leather 22 mm: good and punchy bass, dynamic and natural mids, treble not too bright and not too warm, most narrow soundstage, basically everything happens inside my head
    - Closed synthetic leather on outside, perforated leather inside, velour on top, 30 mm thick: Fat slightly boomy bass, mids distant and trebble sharp and too much like hissing, good soundstage
    - Woven grey fabric 25 mm thick: no bass only tok-tok, sharp unpleasant treble, but widest open soundstage
    - Fully closed synthetic leather on the outside woven fabric inside and on top, cooling gel, 35 mm thick and much bigger than the originals: Punchy bass, lack of mids, too sharp treble, medium wide soundstage.
My headphones are ANC. It seems their EQ is adjusted to full synthetic leather pads. I was astonished learning how much difference the pads make. Users could really "tune" the headphones if the vendors talked a bit about the effect of each.

I would recommend using a smaller scale on the y-axis.
When the scale is so large, roller-coaster graphs look way flatter than they 'should' which in turn makes it more difficult to read the data.
In this case, huge differences, for example Dekoni bass being 20db!!! louder than stock don't translate as well as they could have on a smaller scale.
    Enjoying the content!

A few years ago I started rotating my pads by 90° or so every month, easy to do on beyerdynamic round-cup headphones, on my Sennheiser HD650 I flip them 180°, pads do seem to last longer, definitely with the Sennheiser HD650 where the bottom part that sits on my jaw wears out much quicker than the top.

Thanks for suggesting I try angled pads in the comments under your 'beyerdynamic open back showdown video". Pads for fostex TH900 or similar will fit. I have some cheap leather pads on order and 'Earpadz by Dekoni Elite Velour' arrived yesterday.
I'm not sure about the stereo image with Dekoni beyerdynamic Elite Velour, it's wider than beyerdynamic pads but kind of disjointed, the Dekoni Fostex pads fix that but it's too early for me to say how much I like them.

I watched this whole vid with my DT770 250 ohm.
I may go for a perforated synthetic leather with memory foam for my set. Sometimes with certain eyeglasses, the stock pads don't fully seal around my temple. I also like a slight bass boost, and I LOVE sparkly treble.

I love videos like this as I used to mess around and mod my headphones to varying success...
I do wonder if Beyer's black velour edition pads really were quite different then. I had ordered myself some 990's and didn't like the sound at all, but they were the black edition looking back.
It was surprising because I always use the 770, 880 and 900 X so I'm very used to the Beyer sound.

I think the black pads are the same but did not test it. The other thing to bare in mind is that they do several different impedances of each which all sound different . That said... the DT990 is a much brighter headphone then the 770 or 900

Have you done any pad rolling with the HE400SE? I'm kind of annoyed with the stock pads, the foam inside tends to un-align itself with the hybrid wrapping and I have to constantly tug on it to get it to sit right to shut up my OCD-demon. The velour also slightly irritates my skin/beard a little bit sometimes and they are dust-magnets. I'd much prefer the inside padding of the Sundara for example, the kind of smoother sports-shirt like material.
I might try the Pali pads but I think they are thinner than the stock ones so I'm afraid they mess up the sound and I'm very happy with how they sound with the super grills installed. The added sub bass is very very noticeable and still give me a facial expression sometimes when it appears and I love how it doesn't spill into the other regions at all, it's just clean and deep.

I would love to see direct comparison with frequency rest. graphs between good old DT770 with LE 48 Ohm version and DT700 X. Are DT770 Pro X LE really so bassy? Are DT700 X not tonally balanced and have veil on the treble? There is no propper review of DT770 Pro X LE yet on the web.
I am still undecided. Should I repair my old 250 Ohm Beyers and tune them with your kit or choose other option? I like original DT's but I miss low bass extension (like is on 990) and 200Hz dip makes them sound a bit thin, also recessed 2-4kHz... yeah, I like them but I'm pointing all their flows haha! Of course the worst thing to correct is 9-10kHz nasty peak;) I like brights cans, but this is too much.

I had the DT 770 80ohm regular silver pads, 2 years ago. Sold them last year. Then purchased them again 6 months ago, same model but LE with black pads. I noticed a bit difference. Finally just bought the new Dt77p pro x, and besides the ohm, they sound different and similar. First of all, they're supposed to have the more advanced Stellar driver from the dt700 pro X, but with the Dt770 tuning. Not only easier to drive at 48ohm, but also much more defined and forward. The bass is more precise and strong, and it's all V shaped so the treble is clear and louder. Although the sound much better, especially the mids which were recessed in the 80ohm, the pro x have solved this and speech it's more intimate. This might reduce the tuning soundstage a tad, so I wanted the wider, deeper stage of the old one with the clarity of the new set. I just swapped the pads and I believe I read somewhere the pro x uses the thicker and denser pads from the 700, giving more seal and forward sound. Using the black pads, the velour is less dense, they're also slightly shallower, and now they match perfectly. That combination made them perfect for me, retaining the new driver capabilities but with the black pads it opens them up on the soundstage and mellows their sharp edge a bit, so they're more satisfying. This might be all placebo, psychological.
