I am a newbie to Pan Pastels and spent a lot of time deciding if I needed them or not. Pastels seem to be a whole other ballgame! There’s special papers to use with them that are expensive - but, they produce beautiful results. I also have the Jane Davenport pastels. Both pastel brands are similar when using non textured paper. The JD pastels are just a fraction harder to spread on non textured papers. On non textured types of paper, the pastels have a cloudy soft appearance. The real beauty of PanPastels (to me) shows best when using sanded pastel paper. The most vibrant colors show up when used with good quality Pastel Matt or UArt Sanded Pastel Paper. The colors remain sharp and crisp, and velvety. The Canson Pastel brand I have read is not as good of a paper choice to work with. It has very little tooth to it. I have not tried this paper, but it’s a good price compared to the fancier papers. JDavenport pastels were not as vibrant or easy to spread on sanded grit paper. If trying Pan Pastels, I’d suggest starting with the set of 7 pure colors. When you add white or black to them - this gives you tints or shades inbetween (helps save some $$).

I was about to ask about Jane Davenport's lightfast ratings for the Palette Pastels, but then I saw your pros and cons in your description box. ;-) Posting this for anyone else who might have questions that may be answered by the description box. :-)

So true ! I wish the would make smaller versions too ! You would think the manufacturers would realize they would sell MORE of their products IF they sold mini versions ! (I also love mini versions of things like my makeup. So much easier to carry when you are out at night with a tiny purse.🤗)

@@strawbrryfld1 It takes a lot more money to make small versions of something already established in a larger format - the return isn't as good for the manufacturer/retailer for the volumes they'd sell. If however enough people petitioned them, they might listen! fwiw, the Pan Pastels are the equivalent of $9.50 each, here in the UK... 🥴

Interesting! A pan pastel sampler or get Jan to come out with a primary and bright colors palette (essentially the painters set). I think getting Jane to do that would be more likely! I have the pan pastels but they’re all in the smaller 10 pan palettes because the 20 pan palettes were too big for where I store them. Yes they are only a couple of dollars different in price, but if you don’t have anywhere to put the larger one, it’s not a money saver! So I bought several more of the 10 pan palettes but I got them all on sale at Blick so it softened the blow - and got my pan palette sets on sale, as well.

I am in Toronto Ontario, and I called Michael's tonight to see if they carried these Jane Davenport pan pastels and if they were available in the 18 sets. The lady told me on the phone they had them all and they were all on clearance here in Toronto for $14.99 which is less than half of the retail price here. I ran over and got all four. Going to try them out tonight. So if you are in the Toronto area you might want to call your local Michael's and ask. They were not marked down at the store they were on for $32.99 but at the checkout they are marked down. @MariaRevArt 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I used to think so myself, but then I realised that she's actually a bit innovative. It's all about her packaging/marketing. She caters to the art journaler as opposed to the fine artist. Her target market are those that just want to have a little fun with art journaling and like cutesy, quirky products. Also, JD tends to create her products to be used for particular subjects that you would have in journals, making it easier for people getting into art journaling to just jump in and have fun. Of course a fine artist would probably scoff at her products. It's all about her target market.
