Haha, you crack me up Maria! 'Uhh uhh, she don't be changing her clothes!' That is hilarious!! Great video on the Brassavola types. I happen to be a fan, but sometimes they are not the easiest to grow in my indoor conditions in NJ. We get lots of warth and humidity 7 months a year, but winter can be a bit of a challenge. I have found that keeping them drier seems to work a bit or just a light misting. Thanks for sharing!
Time and time again, I find myself returning to this video, it is such a wealth of information and attention to details. I've been frantically looking for photos or footage on how the sheaths look on a Brassavola, and this is the only video I found detailing this aspect. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos, Maria, I'm a long time subscriber, and I always enjoy your hard work.
Thank you for your positive feedback and for taking the time to watch! ...and the Yellow Bird is such a fun loving beauty! She never fusses or complains...she just thanks you with her blooms and is such a job to have! :)
Your garden has a magnet that draws specimen orchids “lol”. I like that Brassa. I do own one & as you said it is a very aggressive grower. Thank you for sharing & happy growing.
I just purchased a Brassavola hybrid from the annual Orchid Show at Michigan State University. It's a hybrid of a hybrid - Little Stars x perrineii (I hope I spelled that correctly; I don't have the tag in front of me). So I was just poking around YT for information and care instructions. I mounted my Brassavola onto some driftwood using sphagnum moss and sinew thread and placed it beside my window. I hope all goes well. I am a newbie with orchids. I have one other orchid - a "Twinkle" Oncidium - (bought at the same Orchid Show 3 years ago) that has successfully flowered twice. Yay! Anywho, any tips on the Brassavola would be appreciated. This video was a lot of fun, but was more descriptive rather than care-oriented. Thanks! P.s. Your hair is gorgeous.
Thank you so much and I am glad that you enjoyed the video and congratulations on your first Brassavola hybrid! I do hope you enjoy it and I hope that it blooms soon for you! These are pretty hardy growers and can multiply rather quickly. It can withstand neglect and are pretty resilient. If you are keeping yours mounted I do suggest that you water it more often as it can dry out rather quickly. Your mount should do well with this type as it does love to spread out and crawl everywhere. I do love the way they look mounted! Wishing you the best of luck with yours and I am hoping that your new found hobby will give you an never ending amount of joy! HAPPY GROWING. P.S. The best advice that I could give to any new grower is to be sure you do research on each type of orchid you are getting so that you understand the nature and the care that is needed. I have lost so many orchids because I made decisions based on my heart and not based upon what types of orchids are logical for me to get because of the type of environment that I am able to provide. There are just some orchids that will not do well in my environment and under my care...so it is best that you know ahead of time. It will save you a whole lot of frustration and money.
Yes, I think I am falling madly in love with them. I do love their ease of care and their free flowering nature! Just such lovable orchids...I see many many more in my future! LOL! :)
Thanks so much and that really means a lot! It has been quite an adventure...and I never thought I'd get this far...I am just so thankful that there are many just as crazy about orchids as I am! It would be such a lonely place without y'all! ...indeed I am thankful! :)
Awesome video, love love love the Yellow Bird. I have ordered a Brassocattleya Morning Glory 'Valentine Kiss' Brassavola nodosa x Cattleya purpurata will be here by the end of the week.
I love your videos, so much info.. I have a Yellow bird since December and I noticed it is an aggressive grower as well. Mine is small, only 5 leaves and already it has 3 new growths. And the smell... Oh my 💞
Thank you so much for your kind comment and positive feedback! ...and yes they are such aggressive growers that don't demand so much time and attention...just as long as you check on them every so now and again they are happy go lucky. I am so happy to hear that yours is well underway to becoming a monster too!!! LOL! Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING! :)
I just love these orchid i can't get enough of them .Your orchids are beautiful .And by the way your hair is beautiful of course know we ment to talk about orchids lol .
Very informative! I just got this beautiful hybrid and was curious to learn more about how it grows and how its spikes form and your video helped me understand more 😊 I didn’t know it can rebloom from the same leaf-bulb! Awesome! Such a lovely orchid. Great video, Maria 🌺
yes i have yellow bird , little stars , culata ,copper drops , green hairy pig , punakea lee , and 3 no name hybrids of nodosa x cattalayayoung dvions and seedlings hopeing to start seeing blooms this year
WOW! That is quite a brassavola collection! I have gotten very close to them in such a very short time and they are climbing on my list of favorite orchids! The one that I am looking for is brassavola cucullata x c. purpurata. They are just so exquisite! ...but the only ones that I have been able to find are small seedlings with about 2 baby leaves for $50. I'm too afraid to commit to that investment knowing that it will not survive so young in my care...so my hunt is on for a mature sized one. I am too am hoping that they bloom for you this year. Please share some pictures of them...I would so love to see them! HAPPY GROWING! :)
Thank you! ...and yea one orchids poked me in the eye so badly one time my eye was watering and I was seeing stars! Talk about having an attitude...so now in attempt to keep my eyesight I try my best to admire them a bit more at a distance...because they can become violent...and this is a violence free grow space! LOL!
I have a blc tetra lip x morning glory .I have not seen her in flower yet as only brought her a little while a go .And was not in flower when brought .
Thank you....and I love the Bc Maikai...I am falling deeply in love with the brassavola crosses...I have a feeling that I am going to have a lot more of them in the near future...
....who me??? LOL! That's so sweet of you to say! Thanks so much for joining me on my orchid adventures! I hope you visit me again soon! HAPPY GROWING!
Thanks and I LOVE THEM TOO! I believe they are underrated...but are so worthy of being recognized! After all they are one of the most hardiest, easy growing and bloom fulfilling orchids I know of!
Yea...they are phenomenal orchids and I search high and low for them. Many that I find aren't usually sold at these sizes and have been grown for 20+ years...so they are a bit pricey even for me to purchase....and usually it takes literally a whole day drive to the locations and to hand pick them so it does take a lot of time and energy. I think even more work then I anticipated...but I love what I do now and I am able provide orchids to many that don't have them readily available in there area so there is great satisfaction in that. :) Thanks so much for your well wishing, I do appreciate it! :)
evalica OH MY...My pick would be The Francis Fox...she is boldly formed, wildly spotted and tropically colored....a unique and shining beauty in my book...keep me posted on what you decide to get. :)
Hi Maria. I love this video. You are so funny! I have one that looks similar to this but it seems I wasn't providing enough moisture. The leaves are drying and falling off and the pseudobulbs are quite wrinkled. I've repotted in sphagnum moss with packing peanuts at the bottom. Do you think it can survive? I live in Jamaica where it's also hot and sunny.
Thank you so much for joining me on my orchid adventures! The brassavola hybrids are really tolerant to dry conditions so I am surprised that they are doing poorly for you. The only time they usually exhibit these types of signs is if you haven't watered them in a couple of weeks to a month. You may want to look closer to ensure that they don't have any other type of issues such as infections or insect infestations. I would definitely disinfect the orchid and take a closer look at it. And yes they should be fine in sphagnum moss to get the roots going...but these orchids do better without too much moisture and having time to dry out so you may want to change it to another form of media that would retain less water in the future, unless you find that it does extremely well in the moss, then I wouldn't change it over. Watch for signs and it will show you if it happy. I am wishing you the best of luck with your orchids and also your orchid adventures! HAPPY GROWING! :)
Hi maria!!! So ia have purchased a brassavolla Little stars x Perinii... and it just bloomed... i was expecting some fragrance unfortunately theres just non... she gave me 6 buds 3 of which bloomed... i heared that these varieties are fragrant thats just basically why I decided to purchase one for myself. Unfortunately I cant sense a fragrance from them... what could've been wrong?
I just got a brassavola for 2usd. TWO DOLLARS. though i dont know what the specifics are but hey any orchid for 2usd is welcome any day. Btw i also got a no ID maxillaria, aerides and a mystery vandacious type for 2usd each. 😃😃
All those Brassavola hybrids are making me feel so jealous. My two nodosas and two of its hybrids are either still young or they simply hate me. i am still waiting for at least one flower to open from ANY of them. Ugh~! : )
I feel your pain...that's I have vowed that I will no longer be buying young plants...I am just way to impatient. Once they are more established and mature they should start growing like crazy for you. What I've found with the nadosas are that they would much rather be on the dryer side then on the wet side. They actually seem to appreciate a little neglect...LOL! I do hope that they bloom for you soon as well. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Well that's because you are awesome...that's why!!! LOL! They are a beautiful color combination...and if you add some spots to the mix...OH MY...I go BAZONKERZ! LOL! :)
That's what I love most about them...they are orchids that indeed wear an "S" on their chest! "SUPER ORCHIDS" and indeed they have come to save the day! ...by the way what kind do you have?
...I didn't give any specifics...but depending on your environment...usually these like to be watered at about once or twice a week, but can also tolerate occasional drought and likes to be more on the dry side then the wet side. It should be allowed to dry out a little before watering again. This thrives well in cattleya type lighting.
LOL!!! Hey are you Instagram? ...or better yet what is your email address? I wanted to share a project that I have in mind. Send me info and I will give you more info. Thanks!
