*EDIT* ( I think we’re going to try them out again at some point with their cover of “High Hopes” I think I was a little harsh on the guitarist so I wanna see if he can pull it off, will give the points back 😉
    - Andy)
Hope we didn’t come across as too harsh toward the band, they weren’t bad, we just weren’t as impressed as we were led to anticipate from them. The Singer was a 10, amazing range and tone control. It was more the band we weren’t super driven by, Now we do realize this is a big song of theirs to where it may not be the best representation of what they’re capable of instrumentation wise, we want to give them another shot at some point so please comment below what you think is the BEST representation of the group. Thank you guys for watching! 😁🔥

Nightwish works, plays and behaves as a BAND. They don't have deep cuts and whatnot to showcase or boast with their skill only. Then, they are a symphonic metal band, so everything and everyone in the band follows and is under that rule. They don't care about singular skill and/or showing off. What is important to them is the music and the quality of it that they put out and the stories that they are telling.
Next, the guitar player - his name is Emppu. As musicians, you should have noticed the guitar he is playing, which is a simple esp, which alone should tell you enough about him and the band. But let me spell it out for you. He is pretty much the rhythm section in the band and also add heaviness to the music, also he comes up and plays amazing riffs that fit the song like a glove and improve the songs. Also unlike every metal band, Nightwish has just him, not to guitar players and teh guitar is much less used in general in their songs because one he is just one and second nightwish is a symphonic metal band.
Then the drummer - his name is Jukka. I love the guy to death. He has tons of energy always and brings it to every song, his drums sound amazing and again much like Emppu he plays what the song needs and not a million fills per second to say "look how technical and fast I am". Just watch if you want the same song but performed with their new drummer Kai Hato to see and hear the huge difference in the feel and sound of the song. Kai is a lot more technical and drums a lot more like a machine, which in this particular song I hate, because it removes the warmth and feel that the song conveys and needs.
Then, the guy on the synthesizers is Tuomas and he is the one that writes the vast majority of the songs and lyrics for the band. He is the reason for the band to be symphonic and if you go back and listen to the song again it will become obvious as it should have been from the start.
And about nightwish not being pioneers. They started out in the 90's and are the pioneers of this genre, there are millions of bands that copied them throughout the years and tried to do what they were/are doing. Bands like epica, within temptation and so on. Which turned out to be good, because it pushed and keeps pushing the band to move forward, evolve their sound and music(it's not the only reason).
Lastly the bohemian rhapsody comparison did you and the group a huge disservice and the millions of transitions, key changes and other things in this song alone flew over your heads.
I could go on but it's time to stop with the rant.
    Cheers

Putting in Within Temptation as band inspired by Nightwish is not correct they both started at the same time and they did not know each other when they started. This song is usually picked for Nightwish virgins because it's easy to listen to for most people that like any genre of music.
It's not entirely representative of the whole catalogue of songs.
Some of their songs are much heavier (Romanticide, Yours is an empty hope) some are more traditional rock (storytime, Elan) and a few are epic sweeping tales that switch tone between multiple parts (Ghost Love Score, Poet and the pendulum, The greatest show on earth.)
It all depends on what your groove is.
Then you've got the earlier stuff which was a lot more operatic due to the original singer being a classical singer.
All of their tracks are polished and tight with every member of the band contributing to the song musically.
The bass player is also a great vocalist, the drummer is now on the business end of the band due to illness and the guitarist isn't some fretboard wanking strutting ego, he's a superb guitarist but like a proper musician does what the song needs and doesn't use it for his own showboating.
His riffs and solos are legendary when the song asks for it, the rest of the time he's there for the band.

Yep, you are definitely in college where you live in a sheltered, false reality. In the real world, the level of musical skill in this live performance is phenomenal, and an A+. Anyone can bang on a trash can and pig grunt/bear growl for vocals, but not everyone understands time changes, arrangements, and pristine singing.

Thank you for the honest reaction. I'm a middle-aged Finnish musician and a songwriter who really likes Nightwish as well as many other bands and artists. Nightwish has been around since the mid-1990s and they're much more well-known in Europe. Just don't believe the hype. Make your own opinions. This was a perfect example of someone hyping a band or just one of their songs too much. I really like them and also this song, so I understand the hype, but the song has nothing to do with Bohemian Rhapsody of course. :-)
Nightwish really grows on you. They are very song oriented; everyone in the band is very good in playing their instruments but they always play what's needed for the song. The guitar solo, especially in this song, is not a flashy one but a "mood piece" just like many other parts throughout the song. The band is very good in creating an atmospheric soundscape and different kinds of moods and Floor Jansen (this current Nightwish singer) can deliver the songs the way that you could really feel it.
I read a couple of other comments here and I'm also mostly into 1970s progressive rock and "classic rock" but I think you should give this "new band" another chance. :-) They're worth it. Just don't try to compare their songs (or don't listen to anyone else comparing them) to Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway To Heaven or the best works of Johann Sebastian Bach :-) It's apples and oranges... and music is not a competition.

Vimana loved this comment. This is a perfect example of the engagement we love. We know our preference is just that ... a preference. It’s not a fact. I definitely can see the solo was held back and a lot of the other stuff was done to try to make the song shine not the individuals. As an American songwriter/singer/producer/performer that’s 100% the way I believe a song should be. But to me it wasn’t executed right here. I think the song fell a little flat. That being said I also see how the atmosphere could be appealing and grow on you. Overall though I loved your comment😊🙏🏼

In your opinion I can hear that your criterium for good music is mostly focussed on things like technical skills, impressive guitar, and so on. When you grow up ;-) I am sure you will focus on important aspects as there are: functional playing, deliver a message, harmonic and rhythm information and congeneric signs in relation with the lyrics. FE The way of drumming in this song is mostly about inserting energy and not about technics of drumming. It looks like you were expecting that each of the band member to show off. All of them work hard for the benefit of the song. A drummer's goal is to emphasize the moments of the song at the right time. This is not a common skill and Jukka excels in it. Emppu not very good on guitar? He integrates his solo perfect in the song - not too complicated. As for Floor and Marco - flowless. Tuomas is a great composer and song writer.

  • @iTrouble
    @iTrouble 5 ปีที่แล้ว +24

Yeah I think you are wrong... terribly wrong. Its`s one thing to say we don`t like the music, thats totally fine. But saying the drummer isn`t good for instance, is just showing how you lack of knowledge in this area. This drummer is playing very complex drumsets without missing one single beat in the complete concert.
And the guitar solo comment, was as well far from reality. If you know the band you would know that they are 100% teamplayers. The guitar solos intention was not to show off how good the guitarist is, it had to lead into the small intersection and had to build up the scene for the next part of the song. Also in other concerts (like the one from Buenos Aires 2015 I think) you can hear the crowed singing along with the guitar which is absolute fantastic. Check out Romanticide`s guitar solo if you wana see more.
All the muscisians in Nightwish are extraordinary and technically there no other Band out there that can compete with them. Imagine the guitarist is alone, there is no second guitar in the band, he is playing this all alone. And Floor is maybe the best vocalist in Metal at this time. Her range and sustainability is awesome.
Check out Romanticide or I want my tears back from the same concert and you will have a better view on Nightwish.

  • @TheEscapist90
    @TheEscapist90 5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

Well...it really depends on what you mean by "muscles"
You know, Nightwish is a Symphonic Metal Band, and for them showing up their muscles actually means showing off how much symphony they can do.
I think you are judging them with the wrong parameters, because I think that what you actually mean by "muscles" is how technically far the single musicians can go.
That would probably be a good judging meter for a progressive metal band, not so much for a symphonic one. You don't judge an orange by how much of a lemon it is, because it just isn't.
In Symphonic music what matters is the symphony outcome, that is the combined effect of all the instruments. This means that not a single instrument can go on its own way showing off its "muscles" if the song doesn't require it. So you won't see the guitarist or the drummer showing off just because they can.
If your only judging meter is the technical difficulty of the song, you probably need to add more dimentions to your judging meter.

      @KlemnoreBallistics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Exactly. I almost recommended "greatest show on Earth" as a great example of Nightwish then realized they'd run into the same thing, even with how incredible the arrangement is.

GLS in a song from Nightwish that first & foremost showcases their current female lead vocalist Floor Jansen, who became their official new female vocalist in 2013, not much before this Wacken Open Air 2013 performance in front of 82 000 fans. I took a look into your previous reactions & discovered three reactions to Iron Maiden, which is why I decided to share what Steve Harris, the founder, principal composer & bassist/keyboardist of this world's all time greatest metal band IRON MAIDEN said about Tuomas Holopainen & Nightwish with Anette Olzon (Their female lead vocalist before Floor Jansen) in 2015 before he had heard their latest album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" with Floor on vocals.
Steve Harris: "“When I heard [2007’s] Dark Passion Play, I couldn’t believe it. I thought, ‘Now, this is a proper fucking album.’ It’s got everything bar the kitchen sink in there. It was controversial because of the new singer Anette Olzon, but she was brilliant. No disrespect to Tarja, but Anette’s voice suited them a lot better. There’s heavy stuff, classical, even a bit of Disney - all kinds of shit in there. I think it’s one of the best-sounding albums I’ve ever heard in my life. Then I got the next one, [2011’s] Imaginaerum. Storytime is a fantastic, instant song. The rest of the album took me a while to get into. Dark Passion Play was so good, I thought there was no way they could ever come up with an album that’s anywhere near that, but the more I got into Imaginaerum, the more I loved it. I haven’t heard the new one with Floor Jansen yet, but those two albums for me - I don’t think there’s anything else that I’ve heard out there that’s even close.”
These words from Steve Harris came form this 2015 article in "Metal Hammer" magazine: "How "Nightwish became a modern metal phenomenon" www.loudersound.com/features/how-nightwish-became-a-modern-metal-phenomenon which might be an interesting read to all of their fans.

GLS isn't for everyone, nor does it showcase Nightwish at their best IMHO. People like to react to it because it showcases Floor's vocals very well, and the whole cinematic orchestral thing that they do, but it's not by far their best song at all. Also if I had to say something of theirs is Bohemian Rhapsody of metal, it would be The Poet and the Pendulum, not GLS. 😜

"Bohemian Rhapsody of metal" was a bullshit claim and one that doesn't much help appreciation of this band when you go into the reaction with a notion of this kind. More than once, though, I have seen the singer, Floor Jansen, being compared with Freddie Mercury. I think that comparison is actually fair; Floor is arguably even technically better. You've actually seen nothing yet of her stunning versatility (opera, belting, screaming, growling, Celtic-woman folk voice, sultry jazz...)
As to the song, it is an outlier in the band's oeuvre, and I can understand that it is not to everyone's taste. Nightwish is very diverse, with a portfolio from thrash metal to folk ballads. If you explore further, I'm sure you will find something you like. They're also not a stupid or superficial band. If you have a few minutes, go and read some of their lyrics.
I'd also like to answer some of what I read in the other comments here. One of the comments I saw talked about "cheese". Now "cheese" comes in many flavors and is a matter of definition. If understood as meaning "full of holes, shoddily made", this is simply not true with regard to Nightwish, and an hour's delving into their catalog will show that. If understood as "not intended to be serious art", this is also not true. The musical language of Nightwish is, however, extremely no-holds-barred romantic. It's an artistic choice. If that is understood by some as "cheese", all I can say is, you have to embrace the cheese then to appreciate this band.
Another comment said "nameless metal band". That is ignorant. Nightwish is among the five best-known and best-selling metal bands in Europe and Latin America (North America sometimes seems slow to catch on to things that are huge in the outside world), and outside North America Floor Jansen is a metal superstar who has a frigging beetle named after her (I kid you not: google "Tmesisternus floorjansenae Weigel").
So, thank you for your honest reaction; it is much appreciated. If you decide to give Nightwish another try, I suggest "Yours Is An Empty Hope", live in this version: th-cam.com/video/XtXqUNB8zrU/w-d-xo.html. (Yes, it's the same singer.)

Hello. Since this is your first reaction to Nightwish. I will give you a short history speech, "The Ann Waychoff" speech (a short / concentrated history of the band):
Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a female fronted symphonic metal band. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. Marco Hietala is the Bassist and vocals .And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrulmentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and now his status became permanent.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just saw her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit live (Floor). I hope this helps.
I want to welcome you to the Nightwish community. I hope you like them enough to continue the journey. Believe me Nightwish will surprise you with their songs. You will never know what to expect. They are unbelievable live. I want to warn you that Nightwish fans are hard core. So be prepared. lol
I would like to recommend "Romanticide" live at Wacken 2013 th-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/w-d-xo.html

@Planet Sidewinder Hello, the last update I got about Ann's condition is from GoFundMe page www.gofundme.com/annwaychoff , 8 days ago: "I wanted to share Jim’s (Ann's husband) latest update on Ann:
She's doing better. She still can't sit up for any period of time, but I want her to try getting on her computer this week if for only short periods of time. She did get the package (sent by a fellow Nightwish fan) and of course she cried. Hopefully you'll be seeing her on all her sites in the very near future. Thanks for checking in."

Nightwish fans love this song.. I’ve been a Nightwish fan since about 2002 and to a degree NW has eclipsed Iron Maiden as my all time favorite band.. About 60% of reviewers doing this song either hate it or have a similar view of the band right at first listen. My experience watching these reviewers is that those who have gone on to listen to more NW don’t regret it. Something seems to click after the second or third song. I think the key ingredient that connects NW with its fan base isn’t the tight instrumentation or even Floors vocal prowess. It’s how they use that instrumentation and how Floor uses her voice to connect extremely deep, emotional, and human lyrics with their fan base. Ghost Love Score is probably not the first song that I would recommend to new reviewers just because of its marginal success rate of hooking new audiences. People either love or hate it at first listen. My recommendations are Shudder before the Beautiful and Storytime for more traditional rock/metal stuff.. On the heavier side, Yours is an Empty Hope or Romanticide are good candidates. This band has so many dimensions that its hard to determine which one will connect with someone. Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth are their most epic performances. I’ve seen grown men cry watching Poet and the Pendulum. Anyone who has experienced deep betrayal and sincere regret in their lives should be able to connect with the lyrics in that song. Nightwish more than anything is a sum of its parts. All the musicians are extremely talented and shine in their own way and at their own time. If someone is looking for consistent heavy chugs or shredding for the sake of shredding, Nightwish is not going to be the band for them. If someone is willing to take the time, digest the music and look for the deeper meaning behind the Iyrics think Nightwish will eventually become a go to part of their music catalog. Good review.. Great feedback. I like the honesty. Don’t give up on NW yet :)

Marginal success rate at hooking new audiences? Apart from these two young lads the only bad review I ever saw of this performance from anyone - and I've watched hundreds - was from an opera singer whose head was up her own arse and expected manic solos every few minutes because that is what she thought all rock bands do.

What you need to understand on nightwish, everything is meant to be as one, it's not meant to be that one no specific instrument sticks out over the other too much, it's about the whole composition. Take it as if it would be a piece of classical music, everything works for the song as a whole. That doesn't mean that the musicians are basic, it just means they don't show off unless it's part of the composition/song.
I think you'd rather appreciate Romanticide, Yours Is An Empty Hope, The Poet And The Pendulum (take care on this, its heavily flagged for copyright), Song Of Myself,... This song and version is more about the singer Floor Jansen I'd say. The song is beautiful, but not necessarily their best, in my opinion. Try the other songs I mentioned above, you'll like those more for sure 😁 and there are many more to discover also with different styles and moods.

I'd suggest you take it for what it is! Yes - you're right that the guitarist isn't anything special, but Nightwish isn't about the guitar work! It's all about the orchestral arrangement and the soaring vocals above that! This is some of the best symphonic metal music you'd get to hear.

I think you're right on when you said the middle of it felt like the Pirates of the Caribbean. Some of the song also reminds me of LOTR. One thing, in my opinion, that may help with this song is to remember the title "Ghost Love Score" and think about it as a movie score as opposed to a metal song. It has an epic feel to it but with lulls, kind of like a battle scene that has highs and lows. I think people request this song because it is easily accessible to a majority of listeners. I grew up with Sabbath, Deep Purple, Nazareth, Hendrix, etc. and I really like symphony and orchestral music as well so for me it's a win-win. :-)

  • @grim1570

I think its weird for anyone to call Ghost Love Score the Bohemian Rhapsody of metal. I think maybe if one of their songs merits that comparison it would be Poet and the Pendulum. I don't believe she uses any auto tune or at least it's very little but her voice is so angelic, if there is such a creature. Her voice is so crisp and she shows so much passion. It's hard to describe but the way her vocals , and other performers , it really speaks to our inner selves. I don't believe in souls or anything supernatural but to me this music speaks to our natural emotions and just gives us so much joy, whatever that is called , whether it be a soul or what, music speaks to people. Lol. I'm a musician and your claims from that stance I guess I gotta be on the opposite side. I come from ERG and prog metal background and this band has become a huge favorite for me because they are unique in arrangement and orchestration and have tons of depth you don't find in American bands.
You said a lot of the middle sounded like it's been done before (forgot specifically what you said). Hmm... by whom? Legit question. I've heard symphonic elements before but idk, not done this well and not as a PART of the music (instead of just chordal embellishments to go under the guitar lines).
I'm not dumping on you for your opinion. And not trying to defy it. But if I had to bottom line this, I'd say that as a metal musician myself, this band did take me a few passes before I finally got to the core of it. So too it might be necessary for you. And I kick myself for not doing it sooner.
    Or not.

Foreigner, Styx, AcDc x2, Foghat, Whitesnake, Pat Benatar, Heart, Journey ( all in their Prime) Many other bands, as well. I have never seen any that can compete with this band- live ( Rush would be close)… I never advise Ghost Love Score as a first listen for this band. After you go down the Nightwish Rabbit hole, Ghost Love Score-- you learn to appreciate.. Find me someone that can sing like this lady!. This song does not show off some of the magical things they do, but showcases this singer's huge abilities....Go ahead and check out High Hopes from End of an ERA.. Emmpu does Gilmour justice.. Ghost Love Score is a great song in many ways. But if you're not into it, that's perfectly fine as we all have our own tastes. If you want to see the guitarist get busy, watch Romantiside, which is also a much more traditional metal song. You might also try 'yours is an empty hope' live from their Nightwish cruise. You don't need to react to those if you don't wish, but just to familiarize yourselves with some of their heavier side. But yes, that is why they are called a symphonic metal band. This was from the Imaginarium tour and their goal was to create more theater and less straight forward thrashing rock. Every show was sold out. In SF it was sold out in 3 days, for example.

I have never ever judged a band from one song, learned that from the 60's on! Try Romanticide from the same Wacken concert for the heavier side of Nightwish (th-cam.com/video/zz_7OCCQlXs/w-d-xo.html) or Ghost River (th-cam.com/video/05eitd-EA6I/w-d-xo.html) and for a great cover of High Hopes (Pink Floyd) (th-cam.com/video/4oEDnVeYYyM/w-d-xo.html) all LIVE which is the only way to experience Nightwish. Floor Jansen, the 6' 1" Dutch dynamo vocalist is an amazing performer with power, range and stage presence that you can't believe.
I am a fanatic for Queen and been a fan a long time (saw them LIVE 3 times) and I will say this right now after being a fan of Nightwish and their 100+ songs from 1996 to today, they are on the level of Queen and there are very few bands I place on that level. This bands does ballads, folk metal, trash metal, heavy rock and even some pop and their musicianship is amazing especially when you realize this is all LIVE and a lot of it is open air festivals. You need to hear a good number of songs to get the right feel for a band. Cream, Doors, Hendrix, Mountain, Santana, Jethro Tull, Yes, Humble Pie and other great bands never would of made it if they had to depend on one song and frankly, having than one great song is the only way to show how good you really are. Honest reaction to symphonic metal band, hopefully you are still open to hearing more before you right them off, but then again this genre may not be in your wheelhouse to appreciate. Comparing songs is nonsense so forget the hype and listen to the songs on their own terms.

I think your method of analysis for music itself is problematic. Just a personal view.
The way you 'scored' and 'analysed' seemed to me like you broke down the song/score to its individual parts, the guitarist and his solo, whether the drummer was doing some great things, the fact the there seemed some commonality with movie scores like PotC, the voalist and her range etc. To me that is just not the way any music should be analysed, at least from a listener's perspective. Again, my first video of you guys, so this is pretty early reaction from my end too.
But for me when a group of people come together and create music, its not about the individual parts, but about what is created when all of them come together. This is a classic example of the whole being much greater than the sum of its parts. Is it revolutionary?? Almost surely not. But not everything can be. Is it great? Most definitely.
I completely agree with you that other than Floor's vocals, nothing about the individual musicians is extraordinary or the fact that a lot of their ideas are derivative and brought together from a wide variety of other genres. But what you seem to have failed to recognise a little is when all those small individual parts were brought together by this group, what was created was really really damn good.

This band is number two, after Pink Floyd, on my personal best list and that has a reason.
This is powermetal/ symphonic metal; metal with a classical music background. This genre also has a huge female fanbase where the so called hardcore metal is a very male business. Nighwish has a very very huge worldwide fanbase.
I recommend you listen and see the whole live concert at Wacken. Or the last live concert in Wembley stadion. The song: "the poet and the pendulum" or "song of myself" are good ones. The last album is very good but that one needed also more than one time hearing before full appreciation.
I needed also more than one time listening to them to become a real fan. Their music is much more complicated than you think and their texts are deeper than you think.
The singer, Floor Jansen was born about 5 miles from where I live in the Netherlands.
Listen to the band Ayreon; the live concert Universe, If you want more Floor Jansen. See channel of Arjen Anthony Lucassen; he is Ayreon.
Ayreon uses guest singers and musicians from very well known metal and rock bands on their albums.

A reaction video is a reaction video. Music is a personal thing, and if you rate this like 7-8, that's fine.
In general, take in the act. It might be that their style of music is not 100% your cup of tea, but they absolutely killed it that night. This particular performance was in front of a crowd of 100.000 people, and I doubt anyone wanted his or her money back.
The drummer. I hardly doubt either of you have ever played with a drummer coming close to this level. Sure he won't be the God of all drummers, but this is a strong performance, and remember it's not one song, but an entire setlist.
Floor is a very capable singer and she has very good control of her voice. If you cannot hear the difference in her singing between the parts, I can see how the first 7 minutes of the song might come across as lengthy. Once you start digging into her voice, and start learning to hear the differences between voice types/breath/and so forth, you'll start to appreciate the performance more.

But when you heard the front women of Nightwish from the past, then you know why lot of people like Nightwish even more, specialy with Floor as the frontwomen . Floor jansen is from the Netherlands, and indeed she did the rock academy, and opera school, and she is married to the drummer of SABATON, and she is a mom and they live in Finland. and what a good drummer he is, perfect, it is so difficult to change from beat on a drum, they are all so good, that's why Nightwish is so good, they can play difficult music. I love Nightwish. And maybe because i am Dutch, and Floor is Dutch, bur i love Tarja also, because i don't have a voice like that, i can't play and sing like that. It is art!

I’m a major (Floor Jansen era) Nightwish fan, but always remember guys... you are NEVER wrong in expressing your authentic *SUBJECTIVE* opinion in a calm and kind manner!! Nightwish fans who love them won’t suddenly decide to hate the band because someone isn’t blown away. Personally, I’m disappointed by reaction after reaction after reaction that doesn’t recognize what a seriously great bassist Marco is! That doesn’t change my (subjective) belief that he’s a vastly underrated musician in general, but especially on bass. And I also really like that the parts specifically written for Emppu, the guitarist, don’t stand out in a way that jars the flow of the song. It’s always written and played as a compliment to the overall composition and performance of each piece. For all we know, he could spend post-recording and post-tour downtime shredding at home along the lines of Steve Vai, Yngwie, Paul Gilbert, Tobin Abassi, John Petrucci, etc... All of the members of the Nightwish are proficient if not excellent technical musicians, I think the everyday non-musician would recognize that. For those of us who *are* musicians, you understand what it takes to go from beginner to intermediate to advanced to great enough to earn a spot as the headline act at major music festival (regardless of your specific instrument) because you have the whole package. (Don’t me get started on pop though 🤢). When you take 5, now 6 (since the permanent addition of Troy on various pipes and stringed instruments and vocals) uniquely gifted musicians and put them on a stage together, and this is dependent on soooo many factors, you can have the average decent show, you can have a train-wreck, or you can have what Nightwish has: the sum is greater than the parts. 1 + 1 + 1+ 1 + 1 + 1 = 20 (more or less depending on your preference for a specific genre or band). As far as well known symphonic metal bands go, which are intended to be somewhat theatrical, given the operatic or partially operatic element contrasted by the hard rock with metal elements (don’t beat me up, Nightwish army! I’m am one of you!! 😭😭😭), Nightwish is the Top of the top; and they get better as they mature more & more like the rest of us do as we age... in so many aspects of their lives which & is absolutely reflected in their music. No, it doesn’t and won’t appeal to all, like straightforward, traditional black metal “Im about to puke on the whole front row” distorted vocals doesn’t appeal to me. Surprisingly as a symphonic metal fan in general, I realllly dislike opera unless I’m watching it performed live. I love the band Nightwish. I absolutely adore Floor. Annette was pretty damn good as the place-holder (let’s be honest) in 2nd vocalist position (and I really like the Dark Element & her solo stuff). Honestly, and apologies to old school Nightwish purists who still lament the messy parting of ways with Tarja, given that I despise opera, for the most part, I knew of Nightwish but only appreciated and started to like Nightwish the first time I heard Amaranthe. The first time I listened to them, it was a song sung by Tarja, and her voice turned me off so much that I didn’t finish listening and can’t for the life of me remember what song it was. It could’ve been Ghost Love Score for all I know, but I hated it. In the end (R.I.P. Chester... I HAD to), that is ALL my personal *SUBJECTIVE* opinion. There is no right or wrong when it comes to art appreciation, regardless of the type of art. It, by nature, *IS* subjective. And for me, that’s what makes music so amazing to me, and why I’m happy to hear other people’s reactions, positive or negative. So, guys... you two keep doing what you doing and please (from a mom of two 20-something kids)... as I drilled into their brains, and want to remind you, keep an open mind (as you did), be kind (as you were), and never be afraid to speak your truth, rationally and with the understanding that there are other, valid perspectives (you also did that). If people don’t like it they can fuck off. That’s a reflection on them, not you. Brush it off and move along. Y’all are doing a great job as far as reaction channels go. 🤘🏻🎶

I'd like to throw a suggestion, kinda different : Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms. It's a pretty simple, straight forward and slow song, but Mark Knopflers guitar is so effortless yet expressive. I hate people hyping up stuff like that for people experiencing something for the first time. It completely kills off the chance to give something a fair shake. People don't often understand that everyone hasn't drunk the kool-aid yet. If someone tries to get you to listen to 'The Poet and the Pendulum', don't do it blind. The song only really has impact if you know the history of the band.
I like this metal band that no one else has really heard about, they have two singers, one singing normally and the other growling. They are 'The Wise Man's Fear', give them a try even if you don't do any reaction video. I understand you have to stick to bands people have actually heard of. Anyway, give these songs a looksee:

As others have said, Nightwish is not a thrash/death metal band.and they usually don't go for that flashy solo by one member (although they easily could), but instead work best as a unit. And their diversity of songs is also one of their strengths, going from a song like GLS to heavier songs like Romanticide or Yours Is An Empty Hope to folk songs or long epic songs like Poet And The Pendulum or Greatest Show On Earth. That's why you can't judge them on one song. Hell, even A&P Reacts didn't like GLS or Nightwish on first listen, now they love them and GLS and have even attended one of their concerts. And just because you like heavier stuff doesn't mean you can't love Nightwish too. I listen to the full spectrum of metal bands and Nightwish is still one of my favorites. But I always appreciate honesty by reactors over faking it, because you can usually see through the fakers.

Ghost Love Score is a bit of a minefield. People either fall in love with it or get put off by it. And the hype monster can have a vicious bite. The band is full of very talented musicians who act like members of a mini rock orchestra in that they "serve the song." The guitar solo here almost acts as a subdued violin solo in its function.

Honest reaction is always ok and only right one...But really guys, if you just check on song and hear one short guitar solo on that, it does not mean that there is not longer solos on other songs and that guitarist plays something like you can learn in half hour...It is totally ok if saying that some music (or this) is not your kind of music but saying on reaction video that I can play better or learn in half hour(With out showing) is little bit childish and gives "Watch how great guy I am" effect.

Instruments are arranged to serve the song, not to inflate egos. (That's what they say, not what I think.) So, the approach is a bit different when compared to some other metal groups. Besides that, they have been around 20 years, 8 albums, so there are wide variety of songs and styles from power metal to operatic to epic, symphonic (like this one) to radio play to songs with folky, celtic vibes. Metal version of the pirates of the Caribbean is actually an accurate description of THIS song. Also consider Floor joined the band as the vocalist 48 hours before this performance. She is their third vocalist. Whomever compared it to Bohemian Rhapsody improperly set your expectations here. Bohemian Rhapsody has more than one vocalist and a lot of vocal interchange. There are quite a few songs by Nightwish where the female vocalist is lead, but the bassist sings as well. They have songs that are a lot more intense in terms of metal as well. This song was just epic in that it was live and Floor's performance was pretty incredible. There is a label about listening to her known as Floorgasm. This song was also originally sung by the first Nightwish vocalist Tarja. Tarja was almost purely opera in style. Floor can sing anything, but she was singing a Tarja song here... 48 hours... damn.... live... damn...

  • @MPDSR422
    @MPDSR422 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Guys, you kinda missed the point. This song was released in 2004. It has been covered by all three of their singers. The Wacken show was outstanding as a live performance. If you recall Bohemian Rhapsody had an operatic section which this composition had and Floor sang in her lyric register. I don't agree it is the Bohemian Rhapsody of anything. Regarding Metal Music this falls into a sub genre called Cinematic/Symphonic Metal. The orchestrations and choral parts are written by Tuomas (keyboards) and are arranged and recorded by concert musicians. The title Ghost Love SCORE should have given away the fact that it was a score and not a tune. As a performing musician myself, truly great players play to fit the song. The guitarist and the drummer are two of the best I've listened to (trust me I've heard them all at my age) in that they aren't trying to prove how great they are. Bassists aren't lead players and guitarists don't have to shred even if they're supposedly playing metal. The solo was a melody...the melody and fit perfectly in the arrangement. Telling us you've heard better from local musicians tells me you don't get out much. Once you leave the bar circuit you will meet those who don't play everything they know in one solo. Check out Phil Brown's Live In Seattle. There's a studio guy who can play anything and rips up a Strat doing his arrangements of Jimi's tunes. When you hear his studio tunes he doesn't use 1/3 or what he knows. You are certainly entitled to your opinion and I am sorry you started off under a misconception. The US isn't the home of this genre of music. Nightwish has been around for over 20 years and in Europe, Japan, England, South America, etc. are considered one of the greatest bands ever to take the stage or pick up an instrument. The Northern European rock roots are not steeped in R&B or Blues. Those kids have different musical traditions. Nightwish had only sold 500,000 units in the US up to 2012 according to Billboard. Worldwide they're in the millions. Your review makes sense with that in mind.

If you dont see more similarities between this and Bahamian Raphsody, you really shouldnt do music reviews.
And no, you've not played in with better drummers than Jukka ma'guy... if you had, those guys would be world famous.
Youre a Metallica-fan and dont get me wrong, I am too... but Lars is not a tenth of the drummer Jukka is.
Subjectively, I like Metallica more than Nightwish. Objectively, as in composition, timing and overall musicianship however, Metallica gets #Rekt.
Wanna proove me wrong? Show me a Metallica Live show that sounds like a studio recording... you wont find one.

Great reaction guy! Cant be mad at your honesty. In my opinion I believe that this song is basicly written solely to show off the vocalist. They have other songs that show everyone's abilitys better as a whole band. Literally any song from the Wacken 2013 show is a great performance, I hope you give them another chance. Romanticed or Song of Myself may be more to your taste

Ghost Love Score was written before Floor joined the band. But you are correct in that it does definitely show off what she can really do.

It was written for Tarja ~ Floor just simply owns it because she is that good and probably the only singer in the world that could overproject over that much background play. She also adds in thinhs Tarja could/did not in the original lyrically.

@@christophercollins9333 How do you know that? "Tarja could not do in the original lyricaly." I've heard Turunen in concert live, recently, in her 40s, and was astonished at some of the things she can do. The song was written without the 'big vocal ending' that Floor Jansen introduced and which has become a little passe now, what with little Emppu traipsing around the stage to give her a high five every time. That's it, period. You don't know what Turunen could have done in that final section had she been asked to. But that was never the intention, to play it out with anything other than the music and the recorded choir.

Nightwish composer is big fan of movie music and Hans Zimmer. So it's indeed metal version of Pirates_of_the_Caribbean.

This is very correct commentary and review, I like Nightwish and it is all ok, but the statement considering drummer skill and level is very, very inaccurate and big miss, specially from somebody that is listening metal and rock mucis, and maybe has some music playing experience. Drummer Jukka is very good drummer, and it is well known. He now gave that position in band to his friend Kai Hanto because of some health problems, and this other drummer now is also complete beast on drums, he was before in band Wintersun (which you can also check, like song Sons of Winter ans Stars) and some other bands. Also about the same inaccurate comment about gitar player, actually he is also very, very good, this particular solo is just nice and simple, that's all about that. Regards.

I hear ya but you may have misunderstood me a little, I wasn’t saying the guitarist himself was bad or unskilled, just that the solo he played in this specific performance didn’t do it for me, he had great guitar choice, and tone, I’m sure he knows how to play. Want to check out their “High Hopes” cover 😁

So, let me recap: you liked the lead singer, the drummer, the synth with the ''pipes''. You didn't like the solo guitar as it was too simplistic. And no mention about the bass and understandable so, as it doesn't stand out in this song. But, may I ask you this: did you guys notice THE BACKGROUND CHOIR ? It has been almost all over, throughout the song, as powerful as Niagara Falls. Did you notice it, at least 1 % ? I assume not. You saw the trees, but not the forest.

If you guys are familiar with "Over the Hills and Far Away" Nightwish does a great cover of that. They've had a few different singers over the years, and the newest singer Floor is absolutely incredible, but you guys seemed to pick up on that. Their first singer Tarja was good, although she is very operatic. "Gethsemane" is one of my favorite songs by Nightwish, and it's one that barely anyone reacts to.

Good but operatic? That's an interesting one. I do agree with Gethsemane.

The focus of this song is not so much about the overall musicianship (which is amazing), it's all about "the Floorgasm" - the euphoric, spine-tingling, goose-fleshing feeling one gets from hearing the vocalist (Floor Jansen) hit those soaring high notes and switching from crystal-clear, angelic opera sounds to the grittier rock vocal stylings.
There's definitely that epic "Disney adventure film" sound and feel, particularly in the beginning (Pirates Of The Caribbean is a common reference), as well as the more ethereal and Celtic sounds in the middle and the second half of the song. In fact, for me, it took me several listens before i could really get into that opening cos of the "erratic" timing. But when i finally got used to it, it became one of the best parts of the song. Aside from all that, the real bang for the buck is that "money note" at the end.
The studio version of this song (which had the band's original vocalist, Tarja Turunen, whose style is more prominently in the opera realm) had a slightly different approach to the vocals toward the end - the final verse featured the higher registers more prominently, and the "freestyle" refrains of the chorus (after the actual chorus) in this live performance (which delivers that final note) was not even present in the studio mix (unless my ears simply cannot detect how deeply buried it is in there?), and the studio version of the song just fades out with the choral backing vocals. This formal cold ending would have been better.
Because of these aspects of "studio-vs-live", I break my usual rule about recommending how one hears songs for the first time ; which is to ALWAYS check out the STUDIO version FIRST, and then go check out the live version(s) to see how the song has evolved and how it translates live... but here, I am compelled to say, just go STRAIGHT to the live version - THIS live version, to be exact : Wacken Open Air 2013. The best of the best.
Well... hmm... maybe my rule still applies, to hear the studio version FIRST, cos if you "go studio" after hearing this Wacken 2013 performance, the studio mix could leave you just a little wee tad underwhelmed by comparison.

Thank you for your honest reaction! Since you guys are very much into progrock (at least that's the impression I've got from checking out some of your vids^^), I strongly suggest you give another Finnish band a chance: Wintersun. Not only is Jari Mäenpää (the band's founder, singer, guitar virtuoso and composer) an absolute genius, the whole band's technicality and muscianship are totally insane. Check out "Time" or "Sons of Winter and Stars" (Live Rehearsals at Sonic Pump Studios, Remaster) and see for yourself :D

In this band the musicians do not juggle, it is the music that is in the foreground.
The skills of musicians are at the service of music. They should not stand above the music. The composition (the keyboardist) and the singer (Floor Jansen) are the only ones that can shine, but will never do anything that spoils the music. I do not know if it's the keyboard player's idea, but that's how I understand this band. And as for Queen ... I do not understand, one metal band and the other is rock. But Floor is far more versatile than F. Mercury (I did not say better).

The not letting single instruments/player stand out is mostly a nature of the symphonic portion of symphonic metal. In classical symphonies and orchestra pieces it is also about the whole piece and not about letting singular instruments be at the forefront all the time hogging attention.

@@TerranigmaQuintet It's a good point. The guitar solo (for exemplo) is not virtuoso.
It need not be because it is a continuation of what was being developed in this song.
