@11:30 the Fenix thumpnail guitar: These were very popular in the early 90's. Young Chang's European distribution was headquartered close to Düsseldorf, Germany. They used Musicstore Cologne as a major retailer. Musicstore is a kind of Thomann distributor, lost out in size a bit over the last years against the Thomann giant. Fenix was praised for high quality replicas, above Epi or Squier in quality. The early years logo as well as the shown headstock shape were legally stopped by Fender and Gibson around 1994. In that sense, the one in the auction is a well built lawsuit sample. I have had 8 Fenix axes over the years, not a single dog between them. And the Spider case is a well built UK distributor aftermarket case. Trogly, I did not expect you to pick up on it; they were pretty much unheard of in the US, I think.
11:31 Actually Fenix guitars were a big thing in the late 80s and early 90s. They made Squiers and even officially licensed Fender-branded guitars at their Korean factory. Their business relationship with Fender ended, when the guitars Fenix put out themselves became too smiliar to the originals and Fender thought they were infringing their trademarks. Btw, many people believe that "Young Chang" was the name of some kind of master-luthier, but it is definitely just the name of the factory.
Fenix is a great name to look out for on flea markets and such. The usually go pretty cheap but are very well made. Got one in spring and it’s probably one the nicest necks I felt. I’ve read somewhere that Young Chang is an umbrella company that still makes pianos and owns other companies like Kurzweil.
That blue strat with the black headstock is a Ry Cooder tribute. Looks lije an original string through lap steel pickup in the bridge and a Tiesco Gold Foil in the neck, like Ry Cooder's main slide guitar.
These guys do videos for months leading up to the auctions they run going through many of the items that go in the auction. They really know guitars and reveal everything about the guitars that they can possibly determine and research. While it ends up being an expensive thing to buy from the US, these guys seem really legit.
I would use GH auctions to sell a guitar but not to buy. The prices often are at the higher end and you need to factor in the buyer's premium. Even low end guitars seem to get bid up and go for more than than you pay if you look locally. I don't feel like I've seen any bargains there over the last few years.
I got a tip for spray paint, maybe you know this and didn't want to damage the finish, but rubbing alcohol gets spray paint off real good. I used it to get paint off a bass I had bought, wiped it with Dunlop 65, no issues yet.
There is also a sellers premium. Which pushes the overall costs up. Worth looking at the on line catalogue as pretty good info, and lots of parts cases and general stuff as well
Speaking to the upcoming release of the ebony fretboard Studios, I really feel like Gibson is only going to do stuff over 2 grand here soon. So all the elctronics better be hand wound if they're gonna leave the 0-2000 dollar range to Epiphone.
Do pretty much only deal with Gibson because they hold their value? I've had a few Gibson's they are ok even if antiquated. My favorite thing that they do, is keep the broken headstock angle.
That 84 Custom with the Kahler is kinda cool. At the time, Kramer had exclusive rights to the Floyd Rose, so even their Korean budget guitars got German Floyds and Gibson had to use “whatever else” when it came to bridges.
For real. MIJ Tokais are amazing. I got a MIJ Tokai R9 replica for $2000 as a grey market import and it’s as good as or better than anything the Gibson Custom Shop is putting out.
@@216trixie They’re such great guitars, aren’t they? All the stuff the Hamamatsu factory puts out is top notch. They also made all the great Aria Pro II guitars back in the day as well. Next on my list is a Cliff Burton Aria SB 1000 replica!
And here I was thinking I was being original using Fenix on my parts-casters & possible future guitar company. But financially no where near ready for that.
They are very reputable auctioneers but it’d be too expensive buying from them in the USA in my opinion. I went along to one of their auctions a few years ago and got a Marshall 1987x head for £900. With 20% VAT and 22% buyers premium that turned out to be a lot more on top, but I was totally happy as the one previous owner from new on the amp was Gary Moore.
Dont trust Guitar auction estimates because they are almost always lower than the guitars actually sell for, this is a tactic guitar auctions use to draw you in, to think you might get a "deal". You hardly ever get a good deal with guitar auctions because after adding on the many extra's (buyers premium add another 25%, VAT add another 20% and shipping plus insurance add approx another £100) the end price is significantly more than the actual price you thought you would be paying when the bidding ended. Lets use the example of a guitar which you won the bidding for £500 when you add on all the extras you actually pay around £800.
Troglodytes, is yellowing on a Les Paul bad? Does it make it less desirable? I was always of the impression that yellowing was cool and kind of like the guitar earning its stripes.
whats the deal with Gibson suing DiMarzio over double creme PAF's? been making them for about 50 Years now Gibson gets bent! talk about industry bullies!

14:39 ....that's known as a "Cooder-Caster" btw, after Ry Cooder's Strat setup. Check out his guitars, Trogly! I think you'll dig them!

Exactly! I was gonna say, Ry Cooder all over this guitar.

Yeah i watched a couple of those. Pretty good.
Trouble is this auction ended ages ago.

That 79 relicd strat Im sure har been bought by Guitar Village in Farnham England. It was on their latest video.
That fender neck with the black headstock and LSR nut looks like a MIJ Contemporary neck.
I got a tip for spray paint, maybe you know this and didn't want to damage the finish, but rubbing alcohol gets spray paint off real good. I used it to get paint off a bass I had bought, wiped it with Dunlop 65, no issues yet.
I'd love to see your take on the Harley Benton and Sire Gibson-style offerings soon....
There is also a sellers premium. Which pushes the overall costs up. Worth looking at the on line catalogue as pretty good info, and lots of parts cases and general stuff as well
No 20 isn’t a “Partscaster”…it’s a classic Coodercaster! Valco lapsteel pickup at the bridge, gold foil at the neck. They’re a thing!
Is that first custom really Kahler stock though? With the bridge studs in the body?
The last guitar I sent to the US, from the UK, the post was £126, However that was 18 months ago. So £140?
For 1400 I’d love to get that 70s SG, refinish it, and fix the guard and screw holes.
Speaking to the upcoming release of the ebony fretboard Studios, I really feel like Gibson is only going to do stuff over 2 grand here soon. So all the elctronics better be hand wound if they're gonna leave the 0-2000 dollar range to Epiphone.
those fees are OUTRAGEOUS.
That "Road Worn Dog" triple LP is my favorite. Id have it wired to Mastertone settings!
Ive seen a beauty of an early 90's Gibson Studio with ebony board in mint condition. Its not mine or anyone's that I know. Anyone looking?
I’m excessively late. 19 hours worth of late.

That doofy cut away is better than an Epi LP
I don't know about that Korean LP, but I would really dig it if you started getting into the high end Japanese replicas.
For real. MIJ Tokais are amazing. I got a MIJ Tokai R9 replica for $2000 as a grey market import and it’s as good as or better than anything the Gibson Custom Shop is putting out.
I just bought a mid '80s Tokai SG. It is utterly amazing and has changed my guitar playing life.
@@216trixie They’re such great guitars, aren’t they? All the stuff the Hamamatsu factory puts out is top notch. They also made all the great Aria Pro II guitars back in the day as well. Next on my list is a Cliff Burton Aria SB 1000 replica!
@@bucknasty69 I didn’t know they made the Aria also. Those were beautiful and just as well made as a Gibson.
Lots'O' Cool guitars , love the 3-pickup Standard , also the 70's Jazz Bass is groovy... Thanks TroG !
That custom shop studio in really dark green looked great. I like that green a lot
Looks like this auction already happened (last week), Buckethead went for £2200 (pushing £2.7k after fees).
Omg, that 61 strat has somehow been damaged into almost perfection. It could only be better if it were tele shaped.
That 140 almost looks like Gibson wanted to do an acoustic Les Paul without the normal cutaway.
Confused 😕
And here I was thinking I was being original using Fenix on my parts-casters & possible future guitar company. But financially no where near ready for that.
interesting guitars for the most part. none are saying buy me to me. nice video thanks for posting
Add +50% more, no thanks......
They have a pretty awesome TH-cam channel
I always enjoy Troglys videos! Thanks for what you do!🙏
fenix still has a loyal fanbase and Facebook page
Do you not update the video with sold prices would be great to know what they went for
Go to the site.
Hey man if you get a chance please show us some Gibson's.
You might be waiting a while…
If the Studio with the Ebony board is going to be weight relived it will be a real big BUMMER 🤮
You want a Brian Jones NON reverse Firebird. The secret is out on Ebony board studios.
Considering you've done a video documenting every GOTW, Austin, you should know that Classic Custom is not a GOTW, just a regular Classic Custom!
Hey Trogly, i interested in your 79 anniversey i got a really clean 86 sg you might wanna think about!
Hi Trogly, I think that partscaster at 14.40 looks like a Ry Cooder spec'd model.
Z is for 19 hours late.
🥞🥞🥞
New to your channel. Do you do Fender, Ibanez, PRS or anything outside of Gibson and Epiphone? Seems like a bulk of your content.
Gibson is my focus, but you're only a "Trogly ________" search away from other brands
Woot woot Trogly's guitars 🎸 🙌

Where’s HK and Sgt?
Whenever I'm in the top three, the Sgt is nowhere to be found. I'm starting to think it's personal 😥🤣

Hi estimate of 35?
Evening all!!
Aaah i emailed you about this one. Glad you did a video on it. Cheers 😎🎸🤘

The fees including vat total 26.4% so more like £630
most people use the courier service and that's expensive.
All auctions charge high fees.
Do your best not to be ensnared by the bidding process.
You do come across as vulnerable.
Vulnerable no, Savy yes, that's why I would never use Guitar auctions, cos there are "No deals there"

Dimarzio claim they have a patent for the colour.
Gibson should win.
Wow! I can't wait to see what you're buying next year if it made you sell the bucket head! You loved that thing.
