Rebinding DUNE - Part 3 - Upgrading A Vintage Book: Cover Flap, Magnets & Leather

- Hello everyone!
In today's video I'll be adding some special elements to this copy of Dune before tackling the long and fiddly process of wrapping the entire thing in leather. Stick with me until the end though, because this book is really starting to come together!
There will be one more installment in this Dune Rebinding series, in which I'll be upgrading those plain old endbands I wove in part 2, giving the cover my own custom hand-tooled design, and then capping it all off with a special finishing touch! Thanks for tuning in, and I'll see you in Part 4!

My Wheat Flour Paste Recipe
2 tbsp (18 g) white flour (strong flour or bread flour preferred)
1 cup (250 ml) water
Combine the flour and water in a double boiler or bain-marie and cook over medium heat for about 10 minutes, whisking constantly until thick and smooth. Transfer to a clean jar and cool completely. When cooled the paste should be solid, with a jelly-like consistency. Force the cooled paste through a sieve 2-3 times until smooth. Add a bit of water to thin to the desired consistency if necessary. Store in the refrigerator and use within 2-3 days.

I feel like there is a unwritten rule somewhere that if you're going to make videos about slow, careful, contemplative handicrafts like book binding, you have to wear a cable knit sweater.

The bricks are my favorite recurring characters. They're invaluable.
I like that the bricks are wrapped. Mostly for protection, I'm sure. I use lead bars for weight as I glue my model airplanes together. Those are painted in epoxy paint for protection as well. My protection. 👍

my grandpa was a amateur bookbinder for longer than I've been alive. He was always a bit of a quiet guy, not super eager to share his hobby with others. His house was filled with books and he had been known to disappear into the studio whenever a family event was dragging on a bit too long. I was always interested in his bookbinding, but he didn't get the chance to teach me his craft before he passed.
Watching these videos reminds me of him and I'm really glad I get to learn a little bit more about him through your videos. The book is looking incredible, excited for part 4!

I think the coolest thing about your channel is how clear it is that when you try new things, you're basing your ideas on an obviously intimate familiarity with your materials and their properties, so your experiments usually work out really well despite doing lots of stuff you've never tried before
And there seems to be a lot of foresight for when things haven't gone well, and he's already got clearances built in to solve those issues!
I had never heard of Dune before stumbling across your first rebinding of Dune video. Since then, I've listened to the audiobook as well as thoroughly enjoyed both newer movies. You opened my eyes to a whole new universe of amazing characters and stories just from your love of a classic book and your desire to share that love with the world. Thank you!

I wholly disagree with the statement that the sequels aren’t good! If you enjoyed the first Dune, please consider continuing with at least the next 5 originally written by Frank Herbert himself!
I will concur that the following books are different because they end up dealing with different ideas/problems, and eventually different characters, so they don’t follow the same thrilling “hero’s journey” type of adventure as the first. But Frank Herbert was a genius writer, and after reading Dune Messiah and Children of Dune it makes rereading the first book all the better due to you having additional context.
Tldr, Frank Herbert is great and if you liked the first book you should give the following books in the series a chance!

I've been struggling a lot with depression lately, and watching this series, this passion project, it helps a lot to pull me back and remember that there are things worth doing.
taking a moment to show off "the new neighbors" is very Bob Ross. Love that
The best things about this video/channel that make it stand out from others like it:
1. Calm and clear commentary explaining all of the details of the process, allowing us to truly experience the process almost as if we were making the book.
2. No music - the silence and sounds of tools being used again adds immersion
3. Long format with time spent showcasing each step and scope of time and patience required to go through all steps- again adds immersion.
Overall, 10/10 video and video style. Much improved from the older videos you did without commentary. Absolutely nailed it and don't think you need to change anything to improve the format.

OMG I'm in awe!! I set my alert just to catch this as soon as you published. I want to be good as you one day!!! That leather...I can only imagine your collection of leathers (I love adding leathers to my book covers)!! Your tools...your tools are so AWESOME!!!!!!!!! It's a necessary investment to do the job right, and efficiently, so one day I hope to have some of your tools, presses, binding weaver, etc. That leather braid.. I can go on and on and on! So you know I'll be re-watching this a few hundred times. My favorite part is letting things dry overnight and seeing results next morning. I really appreciate you show your dilemmas, issues, mistakes, etc. and how you fix them (even if it means re-doing)!!! That's a book maker's daily life...fixing and correcting. I love it all!!!

I spent 10 years as a young man in shoe and leather repair. Some of the skill sets overlap. Interesting and strangley nostalgic. Great video and audio production. If you doing all this work yourself, you deserve a standing ovation.

Maybe not applicable to this project, but I love cover flaps that contain reference info for fantastical fiction. So easy to pull up a map or appendix without losing your place in the story!

Your geeky book(re)binding projects are somehow both incredibly soothing and wildly exciting at the same time, and the details leave me feeling a little giddy. I can practically feel the love for both the craft and the content of the books tingling in my fingertips in an echo of what shows on screen. I'm so excited while waiting on part 4. Ive been reading Dune, which is a feat in itself for me, as i struggle with severe ADHD, and finishign a 200 page book is a lot in my current daily life. Right now im about 300 pages in, and look forward to reading more, frequently. So whether part 4 or finishing Dune happens first, im so happy to have them both to look forward to.

You had me from part 1. This had been truly amazing to watch.
Excellent design choices for the diagonal flap abs circular elements. It perfectly compliments the design language of some previous version of the books covers and the anachro-futurist aesthetics as described in the novel.
I've been obsessed with DUNE since I was a kid. My introduction started with the Alan Smithee cut of David Lynch's DUNE recorded from TV onto a VHS tape. I was so obsessed with the movie my sister got me the book as a Christmas present. And after reading one book I couldn't stop until I'd read them all.
Those books spoke to me. They whispered to my soul an understanding of the "otherness" I felt, the loneliness and isolation. They gave me a philosophy with which to cope and find meaning and purpose. They tempered my teenage dreams of fame and glory and warned me against the illusions of power that lonely bullied teenagers fantasize about having. To this day I recite the Litany whenever I'm afraid, and yes, it helps.
As a kid in the late 90s finding out that the thing I loved most was so obscure and unknown that there was no one to share it with, and nothing to "collect" except for "first editions" - which like Tantalus' stream are forever out of my reach, I was heartbroken. I did eventually get ahold of a Book Club edition like you have here, and some of the other novels in Frank's series. I wish I had the skill and tools and patience to remake my meager collection as you are remaking this book. I would give a king's ransom if I had it to spend a few weeks with you learning.

Ooooh I’ve been waiting for this. Honestly Dennis, quite apart from the actual process, which I’m watching carefully for the actual process, there’s also just how very soothing it is to watch a craftsman do what they love, and I’m in need of soothing. The 25th was the anniversary of the passing of my partner, and it’s always a difficult few days around that date, and then there was an incident in London (I’m in NZ)involving the injury of HouseHold Cavalry horses. I was a horse person in my youth so I follow a couple of YT accounts dedicated to the horses, and also lived in London for a while in my youth, and sadly two of the horses we know were involved…..so a bloody horrible few days, not to mince words. This was balm on an over sensitive soul, so thank you.
