      She’s about to start looking even better. She’s in the middle of shedding her winter coat so she’s a little dull. Here in the next month or so she’s going to be so shiny and sleek. 🤩

      And somehow I didn't realize you raised BC pups! I have debated on getting a working aussie pup OR bc pup for my farm.

      Oh man, working dogs are SO helpful. We currently have a pair of BCs. Morgan (male) is my main worker, he does most of the herding. Moving animals here and there and helping me put back escapees. Thea (female) is my gate guard and watches my back. She’s a more well rounded dog who triples as a companion, a sports (disc) dog, and worker. The puppies they have produced have gone on to be phenomenal working dogs, one is in training for sports and is also working towards being a medical alert service dog.

    I'm glad I found your vids. I am going to get a place on 2 acres and was trying to find information on having a milking cow and calf but everything I watched was 5 acres or way more. can't wait to watch the rest of your vids.

      Heck yeah! You can do so much on two acres. I’m happy to answer any questions you may have. I’ve paused making new videos for the moment due to technical issues (again). 🙃

      @@Harrowfarmsdid you butcher the calf? Did you calculate the cost to raise the calf to butcher and butcher it?

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      I didn’t do a great job of keeping records on our first bull calf. If I had to take a guess, I’d say around $200 of cost? And that’s probably an over estimation. Maybe two rolls of hay and a couple bags of grain. He was mostly milk and grass fed. I also don’t have a weight from him. Just based on his size, I’d say around 550#s on the hoof.
      Our current bull calf (Aspen) we have more money in because a) we purchased him as a bottle calf b) he had to be kept separate from Maggie because he would nurse her, so he had hay and grain nearly all year. In the end he will cost us about $400?
      The calf she birthed last year (Oak) ended up needing humane euthanasia. We were not able to salvage the meat unfortunately.

      @@Harrowfarms thank you for that information 😁 I'm still a ways before I can get a cow. The pasture I'm getting is not super healthy. I'm looking at possibly raising a few pigs to root it all up and eat all the weeds and stuff and follow behind them with pasture grass seeds. Still in the research phase. I really appreciate all your information

    In the research I have come across neat pasture grass company. they formulate for the region and the animal. I just re-watched your vid and heard the part about trying to reseed the area. I know it's been months since this video but if you're interested they are called Nature's Seed. I hope you are doing good :)

    I know you can’t sell your milk for human consumption but do you let your family drink the unpasteurized milk? I see no problem with that because you know your collection procedure is clean and your cow is healthy. I don’t remember you breeding border collies when you were previously on YT. Is that something relatively new? I didn’t see or hear any outside kennels. Hoping you and your family are doing well. Cheers, Doc ❤

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hey there! Yes, our family drinks the milk raw. As for the border collies, we don’t have a large kennel set up. Currently we just have two. We did have three for a while but she ended up not being a good fit for our program. We’ve produced one litter from our current pair and I am just blown away with these outs. All of them went to amazing working homes. Most of them are herding dogs, one is a sporting dog that’s also being trained as a service animal. Our breeders are also pets and have indoor crates.

    I had a question. How long do must people milk a single dairy cow? Like each cycle and how many cycles or years before “retirement”?

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Oooo that’s a good question. The standard is to breed every year. Most will rebreed at 60 or so days fresh and milk until 2 months before calving. So about 10-12 months of lactation. For us, since we raise a bull to breed her every year, we milk quite a bit longer. She’ll be bred at around 10-12 months fresh, milked another 8 months, then dried off in time for her to calve.
