Escaping the Echo Chamber | My thoughts lately
Jess from Roots and Refuge recently mentioned how she is intentional about not living in an echo chamber (aka surrounded by people who think the same as her) and it spurred a thought process for me to chew on and mull over.

    What if we let her baby kid get milk from her. How many times can we milk her. Our baby goat is 1 week old.

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Since she only has one kid, I would start milking once a day while the kid is still on her to make sure her udder remains even. With a single kid they can favor one and make her lopsided. Once baby reaches two weeks old you can start separating over night and milking in the morning. Then once the kid is old enough to wean (8 weeks), separate full time and start milking twice a day.

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I actually no longer suggest the dynamint for upping production. Some does it seems to help their production, others it hurts it. I’ve had one doe who did great with it. Had another doe that it drastically reduced her production. I personally wouldn’t be comfortable using it with nursing kids. Peppermint oil can cause eye and lung irritation, so I wouldn’t want to risk it. It’s still a great product and I do keep it on hand for my dairy cow. It’s particularly helpful for clogged ducts and mastitis. So definitely a good one to keep around, just be cautious if you’re already struggling with a low producing animal.

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I use what’s called the choke chain method. It’s a form of cervical dislocation. That is the most humane way I have found to dispatch. It offers the fastest, most effective and painless end. There are a few videos here on TH-cam that showcase how to do it. Here’s one: th-cam.com/video/GgpXlG6j4Us/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TpCWvXTPtWfYpOb5

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      We have done that method before, but I found that it caused more bruising than I’m comfortable with. Getting them into position also wasn’t as stress free of an experience as I’d like for them to have. By using the choke chain I can hold them and help them feel secure up until the moment of dispatch. My goal is to provide the fastest, least stressful, most humane end possible. In my experience, the choke chain checks all those boxes for me.

    @Harrow Farms have you tried or thought about sweet potato vines? I decided to try growing sweet potatoes a couple years ago and while that didn’t go as well as I had hoped we did almost accidentally start a permanent sweet potato bed. Since we didn’t dig every scrap of sweet potato they came back in two places as volunteers and we encouraged them. Once they come up in the spring the vines will crawl and spread if allowed. Anyway, it’s worth a try! I have since read how in some third world countries sweet potato vines are a precious commodity for feeding rabbits.

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I haven’t yet but that’s one that I plan to grow for them! Some others are kale, zucchini, sunflower, and then I’ve heard I think it’s sunchokes? Someone said those are great for them and higher in protein. Sunn Hemp is a phenomenal option which I may try out next year, the seed is just kind of pricey and since I’m not in a tropical zone it will die off in winter and won’t be a perennial. 😅

    I'm sorry, I don't know if I understood correctly. So your family drinks raw milk? I really am not trying to preach here or anything, but the idea is gut wrenching to me to the point it has been boggling me in your latest videos.

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes! We absolutely drink it raw. I highly recommend reading up on the history of pasteurization and homogenization. By maintaining safe milk handling practices, I significantly reduce the chances of contamination. In my opinion, the benefits out weigh the risks. I have control over every step of the process. What the cows eat, how they are treated, the milk handling process, it’s my hands doing all the work. I trust myself and Yahweh’s design. I know raw milk isn’t for everyone, but it’s absolutely for me. Here is a great article talking about the nutritional differences in raw milk, which is a big part of why we drink it. www.realmilk.com/vitamins-and-minerals/ If you have any specific reasons that it makes you nervous, I’d be happy to talk through them with you, if you’re interested. But no pressure. 😌

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Oooo that’s a good question. The standard is to breed every year. Most will rebreed at 60 or so days fresh and milk until 2 months before calving. So about 10-12 months of lactation. For us, since we raise a bull to breed her every year, we milk quite a bit longer. She’ll be bred at around 10-12 months fresh, milked another 8 months, then dried off in time for her to calve.

    I know you can’t sell your milk for human consumption but do you let your family drink the unpasteurized milk? I see no problem with that because you know your collection procedure is clean and your cow is healthy. I don’t remember you breeding border collies when you were previously on YT. Is that something relatively new? I didn’t see or hear any outside kennels. Hoping you and your family are doing well. Cheers, Doc ❤

    • @Harrowfarms
      @Harrowfarms 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey there! Yes, our family drinks the milk raw. As for the border collies, we don’t have a large kennel set up. Currently we just have two. We did have three for a while but she ended up not being a good fit for our program. We’ve produced one litter from our current pair and I am just blown away with these outs. All of them went to amazing working homes. Most of them are herding dogs, one is a sporting dog that’s also being trained as a service animal. Our breeders are also pets and have indoor crates.

    Your suggestions are about all you can do. Our girls freshened in December last year which was not our plan. We have pasture in winter, but it is not enough. So we bought the best hay we could find, added several things to the pellets, upped the amount of pellets for the girls plus their free choice minerals and kelp. We only have a few more months of milking before they dry for next freshening, but like you we wish to keep the supplies up until then. Hope it works for you!
