I remember hating this. Came across as wanky and trying too hard to convey (read as "beat you over the head with) a message. A lot of what seemed like annoying B-roll footage of scenery too. And this is coming from a Tarkovsky fan.

This movie is INCREDIBLE. Tense when it needs to be, over the top when it needs to be (personal experience war is VERY over the top).
It perfectly captures the insanity of WW2 Pacific campaign. War at it's core is insanity. 99% boring, 1% absolute TERROR.

Knowing the kind of director Mallick is going into this movie will help anyone understand it a bit better and even then it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea. He’s known for utilizing poetic symbolism in almost all of his movies. In this instance you have beautiful shots of landscapes, coastlines and nature juxtaposed with the violence and war people wage. That’s the message he’s going for - the irony of all the beauty in the world we live in but the evil and violence that can co-exist. If viewed with this in mind, you may find a greater appreciation.

I think the two movies are very different. Saving private Ryan was very action driven and around combat tactics and comms with some elements of emotional trauma in between as people died. Thin Red Line is almost an art representation of the minds of the people. It's slower and emotionally intense.

It's interesting that people who love this movie, love it for basically the same reasons for which you hate it :)))

yeah, the 60s version is way better! Penn was a weasel in The thin Red Slime.

I really love the score by Zimmer. Especially the unreleased tracks that are floating around.

Huh Witt is clearly the main character? Anyway, this movie is the best example of an anti-war war movie. None of it looks cool or exciting. Nature goes on as usual in the background as in the foreground men kill each other in the worst conditions possible. Witt provides the emotional through-line of the film, recognizing how pointless it all is and treating it with a certain aloofness, whereas the others around him can't detach themselves, which oddly enough makes him the best soldier. I think its impossible to detach the movie from Malicks own broad religious feelings and you either connect to that or you don't.
