Amazing what Stephanie Gluck did with NO budget - it was made on peanuts budget. Adam's dancing is lovely - his physicality is such an integral part of all his performances.
Saw adam recently in newcastle. He rolled back the years & gave an awesome performance , one of the best concerts I've ever been to , can't stop playing my dirk cd in the car , it's got to be one of the best albums of all time !
The Viviane westwood Shirt he is wearing is totally kicking me. I am loving it and the the funky dancing and total Adamesque song delivery!! GREAT SH*T!! Thanks for posting this!
The "Geli/Gilly" of the chorus is actually Geli Raubel; she was Adolf Hitlers young half-niece, and Hitler was totally obsessed with her. Geli tried to escape his clutches by fleeing to Vienna, where she met a man and wished to marry him, Hitler however, forbade the relationship. She committed suicide by gunshot at just 23 years of age.
Yep. And the possibility being if he had managed to have his disgusting way with this young girl then maybe his unparalleled evil might not have been inflicted upon the rest of the world and millions and millions of other innocents.... how awful - how does anyone weigh THAT particular balance? Only Maat. But we live in a universe where she killed herself and Hitler murdered millions. And Adam Ant wrote this. Hmmmm.
Hitler's niece, darkened room and me droppin' you know what. 30-odd years ago, does life get any better than that?, DID life get any better than that? Yeah, in bits, but we always fondly remember the things that helped to form us.
you learn something new ever day never knew there was a vid of this song. as a young man this album blared out of my bedroom window day in day out. probably one of the most understated album
This is a super song. I can't believe it's Adam Ant! He truly was a genius before his time and unfortunately just couldn't have out done himself in the later part of his career.
This is (still) living within my brain after so many years. This is a song about Adolph Hitler, and his repressed not very well suppressed, perversions that had an effect on the world in a most devastating way .
Simple song, simple video - simply captivating. One of my fave vids this - Adam is the King of the Wild Frontier! Can't wait to see him tonight in Liverpool!!
@Kelly14UK Yes a slow burner alright. Bought Dirk when i was 11 or something just after KOTWF. Took a few listens to get it but now couldn't be without it. How many 11 year olds are listening to stuff like this these days? Going to my first Adam gig in Newcastle next Sunday. Can't wait.
I don't care if Adam's a Royalist, the very thing I'm most certainly not, but to me, personally speaking, he was my first musical influence. I spent all my pocket money on him, and I'd still testify to his Dirk album being up there with anything by The Clash, The Stranglers, The Damned and the Sex Pistols.
Adam Ants influenced heavily Killing Joke “, “ Unspeakable “ In particular. Geordie Walker(r.i.p.,) explained he and Jaz Coleman formed the gothic combo when dub, Adam and ants and Lasr Poets were the new sensations and the punk was getting old.
i got my 1st taste of adam and the ants when i heard Kings in 78 as i had just turned 12(jeez,i feel old saying that)my first single was 7'' versh of ''fall in'' was given to me by a 12yr old g-friend.i still have it somewhere in my collection
my coworker got me this for secret santa. we have similar music taste and he rightly guess ed i'd love it. brilliant allbum glad i've been shown his music
Are the leaves shaped like a heart? I love this video and feel it should be better known. Thanks for sharing. 'Dirk' was the 2nd album I ever had (first on cassette!) and I feel delighted to have enjoyed it, especially when aged only 6 or 7. 39 years on and I'm still reaping new rewards from repeated listening. To be honest, I think it's tragic commercial success became such a priority but will always try to have a copy of this gem nearby.
God one of my all time favourite songs; and has been since 1979. The song is about the relationship between Hitler and his half-niece Geli Raubal; that's who "Geli" is when Adam sings "I said to Geli"....Hitler said that Raubal was the only woman he ever truly loved.
This song is based on the German Question "The Jewish Question". Made into a film called "CONSPIRACY" with Kenneth Branagh and Stanley Tucci. Made years after Dirk Wears White Soxs. A stunning but deeply disturbing film, and it is still going on some 70 years later - today being the 23/03/2015. Adam Ant was years a head of other people, even with his own demon's that he has had to deal with. Buy and watch the film and the Album on CD, you would think these animals were talking about destroying elastic bands.
Lol - just looked up the Wikipedia on that movie - wow, never heard of it and can't believe it's over 20 years old. It never ceases to amaze me just how many propagandist movies have been made on something that is illegal to question in about 18 countries now. There were no gas chambers and there was no "final solution" as they love to continually lie about. I am not denying Jews were murdered and mistreated, far from it. I am just sick and tired of the lies because we all have been paying the price for it. Most of all, the German people have paid the price and the majority of the world will never know. Right out in the open, however, there WAS a very REAL "final solution" the high-level, Jewish supremacists of that time had in mind, as one can read in black and white for him and herself in the 1941 book you can read for free as the PDF is widely available, fancy that. Here is the Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germany_Must_Perish!
@@Khonsu1373 I was wondering the same thing. I'd never heard of this song and as soon as I saw the title I immediately thought of the Hitler Tabletalks but hey, a title is just a title.
This is awesome, the very best Ant album ever recorded....this is pre-punk, but just listen to the bassline, the drums and the guitarparts....beautiful....but very punk!!! Love it, thanks for posting, added to my favorites!!!
@Msosw And indirectly turned him into a massive star. I very much get the impression that Adam recognises that McLaren splitting up the Ants, (bastard!) was what really motivated him into becoming the household name he was to become. Still, one can't help but wonder what the follow up to "Dirk" might have sounded like without "Talcum" Malcolm's interference. One thing is for sure; it wouldn't have been anything like "Kings"!
Since this was released in the very early days of TH-cam and is stuck at 240p, is there a better quality version of this anywhere? Same goes for some of the other early videos.
It was a low-quality, low budget film in its day. The only hope would be to find the master reel and try to digitally enhance it. Good luck on that. I'm willing to bet the master reel doesn't exist, anymore.
@budafranklin I sent one to him last Spring when he was in hospital. Just received one from him a couple of weeks ago :) Don't know his present address or whether there is a fan club that passes stuff on for him. Anyone know?
Adam has his own dance where he hits his knee I love it I guess he did too because he still does it when he's on tour singing killer in the home in the eighties love him and his sexy thighs
"Dirk wears white sox" deserves to be "up there" with "The Clash" and "Never Mind the Bollocks..." IMHO.
I prefer it to those 2.
Should be it's perfect
Wow, weird to think this is almost... 40 years old! I think old Adam Ant tunes like this really stood the test of time.
All the early Adam Ant is so clever and artistic.
This is the first ever song that made me cry. I still have no idea to this day. It just makes me feel so melancholic. Love the early Adam and the Antz
Amazing what Stephanie Gluck did with NO budget - it was made on peanuts budget.

It is one of the greatest rock albums of all time
Absolutely mesmerizing and hypnotic; have loved this song for 35 years; amazing.
Used to get ready for school every morning listening to this song -- 80's!
He's dancing like this because he's a bassist. he's dancing to the root of the music, not the rhythm. it's beautiful. he's beautiful.
Exactly; love watching him. Sexual poetry in motion.
Bazooka Joe
He s dancing to the rhythm Its great!🎶🕺🔥
@@freaatsma4405Adam is dancing to the drums mainly. Especially as the song progresses. Great song anyway!
Digital Tenderness has to be my fave on the album.
Absolutely original in every way.
Timely words, even today. God bless you, Stu!
Love dirk wears white sox album (the best), never seen this vid, thanx.
No me neither
Absolutely BRILLIANT song from a brilliant album; gosh, memories....
One of the best tracks off one of the best albums ever. At this point he was a genius
Bloody love this. Adam Ant is a Genius!
One of my favourite AA songs from that age. Dark song and infectious guitar riff
The Viviane westwood Shirt he is wearing is totally kicking me. I am loving it and the the funky dancing and total Adamesque song delivery!! GREAT SH*T!! Thanks for posting this!
Great song, from a brilliant album, I saw them live several times in late 70's & early 80's, great stage show. Thanks for posting.
Afortunado!
A Great song from a Fantastic.

as a tween i loved adam but looking back his punk days have aged way beter than when the ants got involved
Been listening to this track for 30 years and hopefully for the next 30 too.
Quite simply - magnificent.
Love this song. I like how 'dark' it is. The echoes part at the end reminds me of David Bowie a little bit.
Ohh it's dark ,it's about Adolf Hitler's obsession with his half nice geli who later went on to comment suicide

"Yeah, just dance in this area and lip sync whilst I zoom in and out."
That's some top tier directing.

The spastic dancing is intentional. It is interpretive dance. It actually matches the off beat rhythms of the song.Get it?

I didn't there was video for this song. I love his songs.. and he's a hottie too!
First time I heard this song in a store I assumed it was new for whatever reason.
utter classic
Ridiculously under rated classic!

Adam and the Ants back in 1979.
Best line up of the ants by far.
I saw some sights with lyrics, and they got them wrong. It's not I don't like the arm your chair, It's arm in the air!
