Talisker 10 was my go to whisky twenty years ago. I always remember the black pepper which is entirely absent in modern Talisker. Far fewer people were drinking whisky of course and I think that explains a lot about modern Talisker. How many people were buying Talisker 18 back then? Talisker's main purpose was and still is to be part of the blend of Johnnie Walker. With the huge uptake in demand for whisky today the Talisker distillery is working flat out with NAS expressions, age statements, specials and Johnnie Walker too which remains Diageo's golden ticket. It's no surprise, therefore, that the quality has been declining. The E-150 is ridiculous these days and that's obviously to hide the thin colour of youth and poor casks. All Talisker, whatever the age, has the same orange colour. I'm a Talisker fanboy but I just can't abide the colour and chill-filtration any more. Even the abv gets on my nerves. Diageo have ruined them with pricing as well. You would have to be an idiot to buy the 18 and the 10 is no more than a £30 bottle in its current iteration. I know you love Talisker John and so do I but Diageo is ruining the brand. I'm letting them go and Torabhaig are my choice from Skye from now on. Honestly, Diageo whisky is dragging us down. I understand that they are a business but they don't give a shit about whisky. It's just a way of making a lot of money. Prices go up and quality goes down. Stop buying to show we care. WT
@@welshtoro3256 well said Welch! It would do Diageo good to heed your sentiment…. Nice comparison John! Yes, Wally on Dram Face wasn't as big a fun as you are of this new Talisker 8 year. Reviews are all over the place on that one so I'm going to try it before I buy it. Hoping I feel more like you in regards to it as I always want to love Talisker. It's just sad to me that Talisker 10 costs $140 CAD, essentially $100 USD, in my market. At that price it's likely never to grace my shelf again. Appreciate the great thoughts on all 4 of these. Cheers buddy 🥃
@@whiskyonthewestcoast thanks for tuning in Matt! I bought 3 backups of the new T8 2024🥳 There’s one store that’s priced the T10 @ $100… weird because every other store( dozens) sells it for $55 ish🤷♂️ Cheers 🥃
Great head to head John, the best way to see how the whiskies are changing. I used to love Talisker 10 but now it just feels synthetic for some reason and I also realised that the new 10 has much more apparent batch variation as no 2 bottles I tried gave me the same feel. Yeah the north is good, punchy but only if it's at a reasonable price. Cheers!
@@thewhiskyenthusiast I wonder in years to come when the new Talisker distillery is built if we’ll look back and say the same…. The good ole days🤷♂️ Cheers 🥃
Thanks for this comparo John! Subscribed! Really appreciate your thoughts on these. I totally agree with you that the old label 10 has more maturity, tastes like it has older whiskey in it, and has more complexity and evolution in the glass with the pepper effect at the back of the palate upon swallow. My tasting notes: Old label 10 drier on the nose, no bitterness present on swallow, nuance, more pepper on the swallow. Spicier fade into the finish, flawless. New Label 10 Nose: noticeably sweeter on the nose. Basil. Maybe an element of hand soap. (Different peat source?) Less balanced regarding spice. Smells less aged, less oak. Smells good though, more modern though. Flintier than Storm and original 10. New Label 10 palate: Better than Storm (which I think is easily the worst of the three by far). Slightly sweeter than old 10. Still bitterness present. Softer and shorter on finish. A sweeter, less oak spice herbal version. Less complex, less nuanced. Not in the same league as the old 10 which I think was a masterpiece. It kind of reminds me of an older Storm. Question. Does the 8 Tidal Churn have a peat profile closer to the Old 10 or the new 10? Also is it drier or sweeter than the old 10? Thanks!
@@EuropaWill thanks Will for sharing your tasting notes 🙏 Sounds like our palettes align. I would suggest watching my review of the new Tidal Churn… which I absolutely love. Cheers 🥃
Great review, tx. The only talisker I’ve had is an 8 year old single cask (IB) on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. It was awesome. I brought a bottle of it home a number of years ago but it remains unopened (with so many other bottles), waiting for some Talisker siblings for a tasting session. From your (and others) reviews, I wish I had an “old” 10. Maybe at auction, which I frequent 2-3 times/year. But I’ll buy some SRs (and maybe another IB) and then give it a go. As to back up bottles, critical when you find smthg you love. I only wish I’d learned that when I started on my whiskey journey!
@@masterdad-zf9po I bet that single cask is a banger! I’m jealous…. Hopefully someday I’ll get to Scotland but afraid I’ll be like a kid in a candy shop 😳🥳 Cheers 🥃
@ kid in a candy shop is right. I had a kid at Uni in Glasgow for 4 years. On my last trip (pre-pandemic) I left 7 bottles with her to bring home for me - all whiskeys that are hard, if not impossible, to get here in Canada (many great IBs). And they all made it home, eventually. Great place to visit and a wonderful place to buy scotch lol
Thanks for doing this as I'm not buying the New Talker 10 year unless it goes on sale. Talisker is my special occasion whisky and I a have a lot of different ones in the bunker. I'll be enjoying those before spending any new money on Talisker unless its a really really good special release.
Great Talisker episode John. As always your Talisker fanfare is evident and rightfully so. I enjoyed the older Talisker 10 bottling while it lasted but haven't been crazy about the new 10 year olds. I have a bottle of port ruighe from a few years ago that I will pop open one of these days. I am keeping an eye out for the annual special releases of Talisker and given the right price, I may grab one. Do you prefer 2024 SR over 2023 SR? Cheers!
