      Thank you, Jose. As I was working through the demo and I realized how much was still missing in terms of feature completeness. I am actually using both versions of the application and can't wait until they are finally merged. I use the original version any time I have to interface with the radio to send messages and use the new version when I need the map. Stay tuned for the "supporter" beta. I appreciate all your support!

      I talked about that on my interview on the Ham Radio Workbench last year (or maybe the previous year). It wasn't necessarily traumatic, just an eye-opening experience on how quickly a civilized world can come to a halt with a minor disruption--a simple power outage in Southern California. I added this to the video backlog.

    Gaston, I accidentally made contact with some local HAMs out here IDing myself through the local repeater and now am going to join the HAM club. We have some of the same problems you were/are having: cell phone service very spotty, lots of call drops, satellite Internet is pretty bad, and we are on an electrical co-op (great bunch of guys, but we do have power outages). I'm glad I stumbled upon your YT channel. I have been talking to the guys ("What if somebody has a heart attack? How do you guide an ambulance to your house when it's hard to find, or give the Sheriff heads-up that you are coming into town?"). Honestly, this iproject is starting to look like it's headed in the direction of me selling preloaded laptops with my EmComm Tools OS that is known to work with a small set of radios and the DigiRig Mobile. • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว

      The zip code is used internally as a lookup key for a number of data sources that I aggregate. The FCC uses as postal code (not a grid square) in their licensee database. It's also used to lookup representative elevation info from the USGS. I take the zip code, geocode it (lat/lon), then calculate a 6-character maidenhead grid square.

      Remember that resolution beyond your antenna's beamwidth is wasted. If you're talking 2m SSB, sure, narrow it down to a 10º pie-slice on the map. But if you're on HF, once you get beyond immediately adjacent states, just knowing the state itself would be enough of a starting point to aim any directional antenna you could carry in a pack.

    Would you do a video on the best Cell Phone for preppers to run with a setup similar to yours

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sadly, I have not found one yet. My iPhone is unusable for more than a few minutes when I backpack during our summer months and the touchscreen does not work when I sweat. I've had better luck with The Ulefone Armor X7 (Android) but it also can't deal with the heat. For me personally, I have not found a ruggedized smart phone that works in harsh environment yet. So, I can't rely on a phone as a prep item. I'll make a video if I find one. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Out of curiosity, How much space would an entire US street map, and maybe a topo overlay take up on a harddrive?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have almost perfect timing on this question, but I do not have an answer yet. However, it will be substantial. I am actually loading the entire US OSM data set this week. I will publish numbers as soon as I can. I would love topo overlays, but that is outside of the scope of what I need to accomplish for the initial release. The current import has been running for about 8 hours and has already chewed up more than 200 GB of storage.

    Could the raspberry pi be ruggedised? Maybe a good project.

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To some extent you could improve the reliability with a ruggedized case with proper cooling and integrated power. I looked into designing a case, but tabled the project for now. The problem then is a screen that can works in full sun, in the rain, in extreme heat, with gloves, etc. The other issue is that ruggedized laptops are engineered differently than normal computers. For example, they have battery warmers and their components are compartmentalized so that one component failure does not kill the entire system.

    Any chance this will make its way to the DragonOS toolbox?

    • @TheTechPrepper
      @TheTechPrepper  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good question. Unfortunately, no. The creator of DragonOS did reach out and offered to add to support, but EmComm Tools is more than just an app. It needs to do a full OS take over so that it can handle plug and play support for a select set of radios. It is intended to be an appliance, so by design it takes over most the amateur radio applications that is uses. It may be time for an update video.
