Before visiting Fucnhal, we wanted to live in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria because the weather there is legitimately the best in the world year round. We spent 8 amazing months in Las Palmas, and even though the beach scene is spectacular, the dinning options were terrrrible. Funchal wins for the food and drinks, but Gran Canaria has 0 barking dogs sooooo 😊

Usually when you have unoccupied new apartments, they are often bought with money that is laundered...an asset to stick the cash in offshore. That's the problem with golden visas..

Nah, perhaps nowadays, but it all started with immigrants from madeira starting with holiday homes and some permanent homes that occasionally rent out to friends and family that are visiting the island.. And southafricsn madeirans looking to move back or safer investments or owning homes in madeira just incase they have to flee....just for an 8dea of how big that community is in South Africa... My dad had 31 first cousins just in Cape Town.... That should tell you everything you need to know, not to mention first cousins in Brazil, and Australia... And then relatives in Venezuela, Johannesburg, San Diego, Panama Columbia, Curaçao.... Now that's just my dad, imagine other madeirans???? There are more madeirans living outside madeira than inside madeira.... Just one 9f my great grandfather's has had more than 100 descendants that now live overseas and he has great great great grandchildren and the next generation is about to arrive....that's alot of people that no longer live on the island.... For a few generations.... But still have a connection to the island....

Hey, I thought you had given up drinking! Love your vlogs and now we are here living on the island and I wish you had mentioned more things. For us the flowers are #1. Then the levadas are wonderful and unique. There is so much to do, constant festivals ( my favorite is the flower festival), beautiful theatre, great music.

Madeira has already changed so much..... For example in the 80s and 90s it used to take 4.5 hours to get from the airport to Paul do Mar, there weren't as many tunnels as there are nowadays..... They had a McDonald's in funchal in the 90s.....the road to Paul was only built in the 70s the one in the mountain from faja da ovelha to Paul.... There was no tunnel to jardim do mar..... I my grandmother's days there was no road... You had to catch a boat to calheta or funchal.... There was no bank in Paul do mar.... It used to visit the village by car on Tuesdays and Thursdays.... There was a bus service to funchal in the morning 6am and another back leaving funchal at around 7pm....or you group book a taxi..... The soccer field was a lagoon.... Infron 9f the field was a large theatre and to the left salt pans..... The area known as espanha was slum like with no toilets only running water, in the 80s there were only 4 telephones in the whole village and 5 cars... There are cloth washing basins up by the ladeiras in Porto... I recall seeing people washing their clothes in the rivers in the 80s ..... Where the 2 large chimneys are used to be a whaling station and tuna cannery run by Italians which my great grandmother used to work in when she was young ...there's also still some whale bones there as a memory of the past... Bar xavier used to be a shop with phone and post office point with a bar upstairs that my great uncle started that land was owned by my great great aunt... The madeira I experienced is very different to the madeira my father and grandmother experienced... People used to make their own sweet potato bread etc. They used the ladeiras as trade routes with other villages to exchange fish for vegetables that were more available in the cooler mountain areas.....children and adults commuted almost daily to trade bananas and potatoes and other goods with each other b4 the 70s... Madeira is now hyper modernised compared to it's past.... The people used to live very simple, healthy and long lives. They were very active.... In the villages you will meet older people that know what madeira was like in the old days and their challenges.

I understand this is a personal viewpoint, but when comparing with Australia (which you mentioned as expensive in one of your videos), it seems to excel in various aspects: from food options and rent prices to diverse natural landscapes, including snow-covered mountains and tropical areas, as well as career opportunities and more. Conversely, Madeira, despite its charm, is quite expensive and isolated, catering to a very niche lifestyle.

The prices became like this due to madeira history..... So how the prices started going up was that many madeiran men went to work on fishing boats in Panama they earned American dollars and sent it back to madeira.... So locals started exploiting this knowledge by pushing prices up...to sell and to build or renovate... Also madeiran South Africans started moving back to madeira since the 80s, prior to the devaluation of the rand they used to buy usd and deutsch marks and hold bank accounts with those Currencies in madeira... They created one of the first housing booms in madeira, many also sought to buy into apartments in funchal... This alongside the changing tourist scene changed madeirans housing lack.... Since most people buy or build in madeira.. They rarely buy to rent out.... These properties sometimes remain vacant during the period of initial years of moving back to madeira or remain holiday houses that they only rent out occasionally to people they know that live overseas.. Or friends of the family...) this is also because of the property laws in madeira whereby if yiu don't have a relative you trust checking on the property and paying the taxes it can easily be stolen as its not easy to go to madeira from overseas just to evict a squatter that obtains adverse possession... There's alot of madeirans that go around looking for abandoned land that hadn't had it's taxes or water paid and they pay the taxes and then claim the land as their own including farming terraces of they are worked on by other people and they claim the taxes after a period of time they can actually claim it as their own.... ("this is to ensure that the land is put to use and not just left abandoned) Aka it's not public tourism.... Alot of tourism that seeks renting accommodation was started out by family and friends and not offered to the public sector for tourism.... So there's alot of underlying things going on with land in madeira to build or houses... Sometimes houses are given on death beds to relatives and they never get to keep the property as its not done in writing so someone that has some rights takes advantage of the fact that it's not in writing to keep that person from exercising their lawful right to the land or house... Land can be very tricky in madeira and so can builders....

I only spent 10 days on Madeira beginning 2023, and almost a year in Coimbra and Portugal. Madeira is lovely, better than Coimbra... but... Right, climate is marvelous.. The heat in the argie summer is terrible, and driving on frozen roads in Hamburg is also terrible. You complain about CTT. In Buenos Aires there was a terrible soccer madness in December combined with the heat, the power outages, the coming holidays, etc. It was impossible to obtain a translation, so I have to return in April. I think life in Ukraine is even much worse. I'm very pleased to see you both with the WHM ice bath. Emphasize the breathing, pls. Never been in Portugal before, really very good, and Madeira is even better.
