I have a 2000 BMW e39 540i/6 speed with the m-package it currently sits at 103k miles with a VF supercharger and stage 2 dinan kit producing 395whp and absolutely love it and never plan on selling it I'll let my future wife decide what she wants to do with the car after I die. Bought mine 7 years ago. Added 30k miles to the odometer, but it's worth about 45% more now than what I paid. When a car's value goes up as it gets older, it's usually a good indicator that there's something special about it.
My dad has had one of these for ten years and this car has been my childhood. It’s so nostalgic for me. The engine sounds beautiful. The interior although quite old has aged well it’s such an amazing vehicle
I love my Avus E39 M5. Just drove it across country and it was perfect through the hot desert and in the Twisties and on the highway it could do everything effortlessly. When I came home I put some Michelin pilot supersports on it and it because a handling and drifting monster that has surprisingly high limits. Best 4 door car if the early 2000's by far and still the benchmark
I don't think this car is underrated by anyone who knows what it is. It is still the sedan that all mid-sized performance sedans are compared against. It is difficult to show off though, since most people have no idea what an M5 is.

Wow "analog driving".. haha ..never thought i'd hear that.. (i have one, bought it new). The 540i was out before the M5 (2000s, not late 90s) but had the "sports" ver had essentially the same suspension, steering and shift as the later M5. I drove both the M3 and 540i/M5 new.. the 5 series were superior to the M3, cool that these guys point on the difference on the highway, 5 series leaves the M3 behind and just about anything else at the time, maybe the main reason i bought it, allowed me to get outa some tough situations. That and the fact it's comfortable.. could party with my "crew" at the time and pack ppl in the care, M3's interior was tiny let alone anything like a 911 or Lotus Esprit etc. Pretty could review from a couple a newbies.. driver is a super nerd or what, but down to earth, uncommon these days.
I debated that exact thought, I was looking at a newer bmw and decided based off resale value and bang for buck to go with an E39 M5. Still happy with this choice!
As an E39 M5 owner people don't realise how fast these cars actually are. It's slightly faster than an E46 M3 off the line - Impressive as it weights alot more. It's a very subtle M car until you muffler delete it.
I would purchase the new car, but I would only do that because the maintenance on the M5 would be super expensive. I currently drive a 435 and have had 0 issues, but fast forward 15 years and something has gotta break.
John Weil very true, but it’s all relative because you will experience heavy depreciation with your 435. So it’s either depreciation or maintenance. Doesnt really matter.
To answer the question you asked at the end, I think it depends if you already have a daily or not... well at least for me. If I had another $16,000 to spend on a car and my e90 was perfectly fine, I’d go with the e39 M5, but if I needed a daily, I’d probably go with the F30 328i.
i wouldnt say its under rated seeing that the prices have been quickly escalting for past few years following all the articles that have been posted on how it the best & last real bmw in auto mags & online. really glad you scored one & appreciate it.
Great video man! I would definitely go with the E39 M5. It's a timeless car that has aged very well. Also less electrical junk to break when comparing to newer models. I think the E46, E39, and E38 generations were BMW's peak as far as styling, and uniqueness goes.
Great job explaining the main points of the E39 M5. I also have a Carbon Black E39 M5 and you hit the nail on the head. Just a few addons though, the car is remarkably safe, fuel consumption can be up to 28 mpg (granny driving) if this is a concern, and the 6-speed gearbox is arguably one of the top transmissions BMW ever produced. Great comparison to the E92 M3.
I have a 2001 530i with m sports package and shes almost on 300ks, and still rebuilding her here in new zealand, and honestly love it, cant wait to complete it, nice ride by the way😉
I have an 01 e39 m5. I disagree with changing the wheels unless it’s oem+ bmw rims. But removing the rear mufflers is the first thing to do. No regrets.
I've never heard anyone say the e39 was underrated ever. Understated yeah, Underated never. That's a new one. M cars have never been underated . Everyone knows what a M model car is and what to expect.
I wouldn't call it underrated anymore, given how the prices have been going up. You used to be able to pick up a decent one for under $10k all day long, now that hardly even gets you a 200k mile, salvage title M5.
yeah not really like the 540i, the M5 engine has ITBs, different dual vanos, LSD, different suspension, probably faster steering .... Love how solid and quiet BMWs feels. Recenly I had a ride in M5 V10 and you know how exotic they sound, so outside there is so much "drama" when buddy revving it and after that when I was inside - deadly quiet, we hit 220km/h but I felt like we were with 120 haha Defenitly cars fot the Autoban !
You asked a very important question at the end. What would you buy? So I have owned the E39 for over 7years but never the M5 , I have owned the 525, 530 sport package. Last year, When someone totaled my parked 2003 525i sport package 5spd stk, with 225km I was really really mad. I knew it would be hard to replace. It took me over a month to find a replacement. Loved the E39 M5 ever since the 2000 year model came out. I still remember car and driver or the motor trend magazine had the Midnight Blue in the cover page. It is was a dream car. Long story short I found a 2001 sport package 530i Auto. Very nice a fast car. Most recently I have been looking for a newer BMW. So the question do is spend 35k for 2014-2015 M5 or the same money on the legendary E39 M5. Still can't decide... absolutely love this car ...

I ended up buying an R56 Mini and selling the M5. Now I've gotten bored of the Mini and am looking to get an e36 M3.

I've got a 2000 e39 540i 6 speed M sport, Dinan tune, full cat delete, 3" exhaust. There's not much difference than my car and an M5. Mine is crazy angry sounding though. I've done 0-250 Kph (155 mph) in under 25 seconds. They are great cars.
@@BimmerM5e39 It might be a bit off as I'm running staggered 19's and have not recalibrated the speedo. But it feels pretty damn fast. I have also gone to a bigger intake manifold and throttle body. Also Taller geared LSD rear end.

The Metallic paint on his GTI, the Black and Silver paint on our two older BMW's looks awesome and the cars stay cleaner longer.

Good video. Love the M5. Truly an iconic car! The M5 and 540i are very different though. (Motor, driveline, brakes, suspension, steering, interior, exterior) I currently have an Alpine White 2002 540i/6 w/114k miles. Tons of recent maintenance, but also has a bunch of relatively expensive mods. Dinan CAI, Dinan Intake Manifold, Dinan Throttle body, Dinan MAF, Dinan exhaust, Dinan Stage 5 tune and a resonator delete w/3" exhaust piping. E39 M5 rear end, M5 brakes, Ground Control coil overs and a Zionsville rad w/electric push/pull fans. The car sounds amazing....pulls very hard....but is no M5. I'm probably - realistically - 335-345hp at the crank. My question is - do I Supercharge it - probably get about 425-450hp at the crank or sell it and get an M5? This is not an $8k 540i though.....
Would easily take the F30 just for aesthetics. Would take the e39 m5 only for future potential appreciation and get my self an F80 in 10 years with that money. Anyways, sick car!

e39 m5 future classic for sure, grab them while you can. I love bmw's from that era, also have e46 ZHP, but e39 m5 is on my list.

I daily drove one for three years, it was an awesome, very understated, very fast, comfortable and classy machine.
