  • What is slow processing speed? Watch as our expert explains how we take in, and make sense of, information.
In this video, Ellen Braaten, PhD, Director of the Learning and Emotional Assessment Program at Mass General, explains what slow processing speed is and how it affects kids. Also known as slow processing disorder, slow processing speed means it takes kids longer to get something done than their peers, according to Dr. Braaten. Kids with learning and thinking differences may have more trouble with slow processing speed than kids without these differences, says Dr. Braaten. Keep in mind, slow processing speed has nothing to do with intelligence.
Watch as Dr. Braaten explains what slow processing speed is, how it plays out in kids, common myths about information processing differences, and tips for parents to help their kids thrive.

Just watching this makes me feel like I wanna cry. I've known I have problems with this since I was pretty young, and it's still affecting me into my early 30's. It just makes /everything/ harder. It's so hard to keep up with a job, with this.

I’ve ad(h)d but faster processing than most people I know and sometimes get frustrated how long some people may take comprehending certain things. Of course there are other things/fields I may not/don’t understand but talking more in general

I think I have been struggling with this since primary school, I was always put in small groups where teachers would allocate extra comprehension tasks that were really simple and repetitive. Getting older my friends and family would make fun of how slow I was at picking up and understanding things and completing tasks, and I developed really bad anxiety and panic attacks due to having so many embarrassing moments where I couldn’t understand social cues and other information quick enough, and even now I’m in college years and my teachers have actually started taking my book when copying down notes and doing it for me because I always hold up the class. It’s so embarrassing and humiliating, all my class sees me as the dumb girl and I hate the label and always feel the need to prove it wrong but I keep making the same mistakes. Now that I’m in teenage years going on to be a young adult, my mum thinks I’m just lazy or procrastinating. But I’ve always felt that it was abnormal how much I struggle with simple tasks and it really hurts that no one is understanding me

i understand you, people are always promoting self-love and all that bullshit but when someone is having trouble keeping up, they just label as as "stupid" and "slow" but don't show it, they *THINK* of us that way 😡 what can we do tho? i have anxiety also because of the difficulties i face with this stupid brain thing and can't even do anything right.

You're not alone. Sometimes, I feel like I'm the only person on this planet who was born with this issue. But then, I was curious and decided to TH-cam what slow processing disorder is. It really affects your self-worth, self-esteem and can really put a strain on your mental health. I just take it one day at a time and remember I'm doing the best that I can. Despite, how others perceive me - ignore them and if it helps and you need to take down notes or screenshots to remember instructions just do what you can. ❤ you aren't alone.

No matter what it is. My parents get judgemental with me about things I should know and my dad I thought understood I was thinking things through but a time they got this big package from Social Security and they asked me to help and then went to the paperwork and then went to just straight up guessing and I was actually frustrated not just from them giving me very little time to do this but from the confusion if they wanted my help or not. I gone to school online and that was bad because I couldn't keep to the due dates. I tried hard but I needed accommodations just like when I was in the program doing that paper it didn't take the other participants any time to do. With writing papers and reading even with the math fluency I did, I seriously struggled. One of my teacher placed me in a class I had no business in, it had nothing to do with the classes I took. It wasn't at all like the classes I took and I couldn't eliminate it, the class I should have been in instead was already full, it was an elective my more necessary classes (World History and English) were surrounding it. It brought down my Grade point average. When I got hit by a car that was bad on me because at that point I got no instruction at all and I wasn't getting it. I had at least some skills beforehand I would make pancakes great but my brother was cruel and started laughing at me because I couldn't flip a pancake. I couldn't go up to my room because I wasn't ambulatory but the doctors rushed me to that too. Then I go to another school because my momma decides she wants to put me and my younger two sisters in foster care. I still was homeschooled via the different school but I don't even think I took the test well. Rule for schools you cannot determine how smart a person is if they're injured. I'd have graduated High School. I get overwhelmed. I have attempted to work at different places I would address that I needed accomodations in workplace but they really make you go through hoops to get them. I don't last long on jobs in programs or even with schooling. I thought the school would be more time lenient and that was an advantage to it. I don't learn fast I learn thorough and I could really surprise a person with what I'm capable of remembering.

I understand you, i too went through the same thing..
i remember also been put into small support groups and feeling different to others and also feeling as though i didnt need to be there..the teachers should try and see what you are good at instead of insisting on focusing in spelling and maths..i also think if they would draw less attention to you and everyone would do the same thing you would do your best instead of killing your self esteem by separating you from the "smarter" kids.
I remember being judged by how good i was at maths for everything and sometimes would not get picked to do art projects or a main role in drama or assemblies because i wasnt good at maths..wich is beyong crazy now looking back. One year the music teacher gave me a main sing role and my classroom teacher wanted to refuse and give it to a kid that deserved it because they excelled and would represent our class better..the music teacher insisted and I forever thank her.
I also remember teachers been "worried" about me because i was not good at maths and was very slow at learing it wich is true and would call in my parents and have me sent to do all sorts of tests like vision, hearing, dyslexia year after year..i was fine..maths was just not my thing.. i learned it much slower
One year we had a dyslexic student in our class that would require special coloured paper and that teacher had the nerve to do extra photocopies for me who was tested negative for dyslexia..she was convinced i was..i hated feeling different.but i was very good an interested at art, choir, drama, computers, history, creative writing..all the more arty subjects..they didnt care to even notice.. because of the praise even the kids that where not good at art etc would succede anyway because the teachers would fuel them with praise and not discourage them by "encouraging" them as they did to me and a small group of others simalar to me..i have many other stories but wont write them. teachers can make or break you ..forever really.

The struggle is real, Ik bt u are no alone❤

I think it's interesting that in school, students can get accommodations, but after school or college, it's like it's not discussed anymore. It doesn't go away. People forget that this is how someone's brain may be wired. We are all different. The environment and support systems play a major role. There are ways to develop supporting skills, but with anything new, it will take time.

Just got my diagnosis of autism and slow processing of information.
I feel like I’ve worked my whole life just to keep up, and like I’ve had so many humiliations because I misunderstood the cues.
It’s hard to admit I need more time. It’s hard to admit I can’t keep up.
I was always hiding my confusion and ineptitude with jokes and excuses.
“ yes, you’re right! What a silly mistake, I’ll try harder.”
But I knew in my gut that I wasn’t going to get any better at the thing they were trying to teach me.
It’s funny, to not have to hide anymore.

I'm 36, and I guess this is what I have. A bit of ADHD and attention/focus issues, but the biggest and most primary issue of it all is auditory. When people speak to me, I process the information very slowly, and sometimes not at all. I had a bad experience today trying to understand what someone was saying, and re-examining the situation over and over again in my head, several parts of the memory are blurry and foggy because I didn't understand what this person was saying. Perhaps it was my stress and anxiety level exacerbating an already difficult task. I wish I knew what to do.

I have this. I just turned 18 and I really wish I could have gone to a professional to talk to them about this to maybe give me more tips on how to deal with it. I kinda struggle with both sides of it. I struggle more with motor though. I've been especially self-conscious about it recently because I found out a lot of adults in my life in elementary school told my mom that they don't believe I'm fit for college. That hurts because I know I'm smart. I'm just not fast. I know I can make it through college as long as I put in the work and time I know I need to put into it.

When in elementary I was in I always got pulled out of class and put in a room with a few other stundents and we would practice writing and comprehension skills and simple math problems. Then when I got to high school it all went down hill. I never understood what I had to do when everyone else picked up on it quick, the teachers always told me I will not pass if I did not to my work because they came around and nothing was on my paper. I failed all my classes two years and had to go to an alternative school my last year. Even today after I graduated people tell me bad things though. Someone in my family told me I don’t know if you are acting stupid to be funny or if you actually are. When I go to doctors a few years ago they tell me I have add

Im a junior in high school right now, I’m in class and we would have an assignment due by the end of class, the other kids would turn in the assignment in 15 minutes and I always am the last one to turn in the assignment, everyone else will be waiting for me to get done so the teacher could move on, eventually the teacher sends me out into the hallway to complete the assignment while everybody else could move on, then I get caught in this endless cycle of falling behind and having to go to tutoring everday after school. Teachers and students think that I’m just lazy and I wasn’t doing my work, in fact it’s the opposite, I’m working insanely hard to keep my grade from dropping below a 70. My parents haven’t gotten me any accommodations yet, so school is twice as hard for me. I’m glad I know I’m not crazy.

Understood has an article for parents that includes tips on how to help kids improve their processing speeds. While it's focused on kids, there may be some tips that can help you as you navigate this journey. u.org/2FNwBYg You might also want to talk directly and frankly with your instructors to see if they have any suggestions for how to help. And your college may have a student aid center that can provide assistance, but you'll have to advocate for yourself. You might find this article useful as well. u.org/34CQzOg Let us know how it goes.

Hello there, I have it too and I'm from Sydney. I got a psychometric test done 6 years ago and the provisional psychologist confirmed that I am "slow" compared to the rest of my peers, but that in the report it's not classified as a disability. How on earth can it not be classified as a disability if you are constantly in and out of jobs always finding yourself struggling at the beginning, or when there are constant changes and you need to literally take note of everything down because a) you don't have a visual memory b) you cannot remember what the person just said c) you are receiving the information but for some reason your brain cannot understand it hence why you need detailed instructions. Sometimes, I feel so alone and I don't understand why there isn't a label that can be put onto this. What resources and tools are available if its not classified as a disability? This has really impacted my mental and physical health. Masking it for several years but being unable to hide it any longer makes me think if people like us with a slow processing disorder can actually get permanent employment with support and understanding. Hang in there. I thought I was alone. ❤ and I never really understood exactly why I was always slow when it came to picking up info during my high school and it has immensely affected my employment journey.

Thanks for your comment Carlo lapuz. Many people discover they have learning and thinking differences as an adult, and you're not alone.
Adult evaluations for learning and thinking differences must be completed in person by a qualified professional, like a psychologist, doctor, or learning behavior specialist. This can be done at a community mental health agencies, counseling or study skills center at a local college or university, or a local hospital-based program.
Here’s some information on who can evaluate adults for learning and thinking differences: u.org/296krKp
If the evaluation is not covered by your insurance or if you don't have insurance, there are two other things that could help you find an evaluation at a reduced cost:
      1. Find out if any local universities with graduate programs in special education or psychology have clinics that conduct evaluations. These are often offered at substantially reduced cost.
      2. Check with your local county or state adult education office. They may know of private practitioners who perform evaluations on a sliding scale or at reduced cost.
You may want to consider connecting with these organizations in your area:
      LDA: ldaamerica.org/support/state-local-affiliates/
      IDA: eida.org/ida-branches/
      We hope this helps.

Although this is not actual disorder(?), SPS really often affects me. I can almost never hand in work on time due to sluggishness - however I still manage to complete as much as possible and ensuring I achieve the Lesson Aim.
There have been times I’ve have to tell me teacher she was reading a text too fast for me to process the events. Thing is I’ll understand the story, just process the events slower. She quickly surveyed the class next lesson on if anyone thought she was reading too fast, and nobody said a thing/raised their hand.
I’ve wanted to speak to someone, in person, about my sluggishness but I’m sure they will shrug it off as a joke/that I’m seeking for attention over something small, that perhaps it is normal in people (SPS)

1.CHANGE the way of learning or reading and not the main GOAL

Excuse me for my english, but I hope it is comprehensive enough.
Since I was a kid, my family, friends and teachers would always remind me how slow I am, which had a major influence on my self-esteem development.
They said, I speak too slow (bcoz whenever I tried to speak faster, I would start to mingle words). Further more, my dad would complain, every time he asked me to do a task quickly, something like : "Damn, learn to do things faster boy, you're too slow and you know we do not have that much time!!"
Processing information is really hard, except for solving computer science/ math algorithms.
Surprisingly I used to be one of the fastest kids in elementary and high school in sports (athletics and soccer).
I've never understood why, until recently.

This has manifested as slow Processing Speed. I have been tested and my Processing Speed in very low, in the 20th percentile range. For every thing else on the IQ test I was above the 95th percentile.
It is very weird being considered the smart person in the room but I can read subtitles in a movie fast enough to understand it before the sentence goes away. The worst is the TSA at the airport. They bark orders at me and it never makes any sense.

I've been told from a very young age that I'm pretty slow at everything. But neither myself or my parents really paid any attention to that because i was a child and i was always told i was js lazy. Now that I'm a teenager and is able to see things and understand myself better, i realized i wasn't just lazy. Yes, i do have a very passive nature which then adds up to my condition rn. It always takes twice the time for me to complete a simple task compared to others. During class even tho its a very simple and basic concept i still want more time to think abt it and figure it out by myself. Now i tried talking abt it to my parents. Fyi I'm an only child so growing up,i was pretty doted up on and my mom tried to cheer me up by motivating me and told me to try giving my best at everything. I mean I'm really thankful for that But they js don't get it. Its so much pressure i have to go through js to keep up with my frnds who are basically same age as me and i still end up being stuck or a step behind. I js want to be like everybody else and not be a burden for the ppl around me...

Guys, I recently observed this trait, turned and I'm 24. I do have a solution that worked for me though the name of this thing came to my observation an hour ago.
What worked for me? Anticipation, expectation, a step beyond conscious. In other words, you try to be conscious like a security guard all the time.
Practice for few days this thing then move on to next step which is Anticipation.
For example, read a sentence, comprehend it and then start reading further while anticipating what might happen next in the story.
Your brain won't just work as before but you'll see a sharper brain than the earlier version.
It'll take long, usually longer than the period your brain had trauma, or depressed thoughts in the recent past. Have you lately been in depression, or let's say did you find yourself thinking something that bothered you for last couple of years or more?
I guess this slow processing disorder is not a disorder, it's a shift from your old brain to a new, updated, upgraded version. All you need is to do 2 things i described above with consistency.

If you are currently in crisis, here are some additional places to look for immediate help:
The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org) has resources to direct you to local crisis centers and to speak with you on the phone or via the online Lifeline Crisis Chat: www.suicidepreventionlifeline.org/gethelp/lifelinechat.aspx
PBS has a great state-by-state resource guide to help, too: www.pbs.org/wnet/cryforhelp/episodes/resources/hotlines-and-web-sites-for-teens/?p=11
The Crisis Text Line offers support for teens 24/7. All they have to do is text the word 'listen' to 741-741

Well, this may not fit into your situation... but if you look into what I share here it might be something that could help:
      N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC):
      th-cam.com/video/kvpO_Zo9OpU/w-d-xo.html
      And this combination of supplements:
      www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00A4OVLRS/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It may also be that you're not getting quality sleep. Which could be a result of a lack of oxygen when sleeping. If you stick your tongue out and the tongue is covering your uvula then it may be that your tongue is too big at the base and falls back into your throat while you sleep or if you have a small lower jaw, or a deviated septum... If this is the case for you, then consider doing a sleep study. Idk, this is a shot in the dark on my part... maybe you get good sleep lol.

David Froehlich A half year ago I told my doctor about my SCT symptoms. I then started eating L-theanin, meditated everyday and changing sleep habits. I realised how smart I am. Trust me, life is worth living

I am sure the slow processing speed affects students of all ages. Now, teachers will be able to understand these students better and help them to get better.

What kind of degree are you doing? I tried but failed science and math because they are extremely detailed for a slow learner like me. I need proof that this can be done by one of our kind lol. Please tell me.
