  • It's called gardening, as I like to say. Assessing a garden's strengths and weaknesses is an essential gardening skill. Making adjustments that give plants the best chance for success and contribute to the art that is a well-designed garden is something I do with every garden I care for. Piet Oudolf recently visited Lurie Garden in Chicago which he designed in 2004 and for which I grew plants and helped with onsight adjustments and installation. Piet returns frequently to assess and make recommendations for adjustments and new ideas. Follow along for an informal moment during his visit.

This video definitely put a smile on my face! I took the train downtown Chicago last Saturday, my main reason was to walk through the Lurie Garden! It was such a wonderful sight. I was there in May as well, but plants are constantly changing. Need to go at least once a month!

Nice that the Laserpitium siler suggestion on Piet's phone shows 'De Hessenhof', which is the most respected nursery in The Netherlands.

I'm trying my best to be a great gardener. I'm two months into my position as a garden program coordinator for Earthwise Society. It's a small public garden which primarily focuses on perennials. It's located in Tsawwassen, BC, Canada, if you ever want to stop by Row. I'm starting to learn all the plants in their garden (i.e. name, growth pattern and form). The garden has been slightly neglected. I've pulled out a tone of weeds, unfortunately with no plan for what to do with the open soil afterwards. My management has no interest in purchasing new plants or dealing with the open soil. Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

oh boy, so fun to follow along for a few minutes!! don't know if this is helpful, but I planted agastache as a plug a couple of years ago, and it was feeble until this year. I actually lost a couple of plants, but the one that survived now stands tall and beautiful. I'm so excited! needs a minute to find its legs

FYI we’re in the western suburbs and our agastache have had problems this year also. The early shoots seem to have leaf blight or rust or something, and are yellowing. The later shoots seem ok.

Interesting to hear how y’all review the plantings. It looks like the garden is in a bit of a lull between spring and summer blooms. Does that make the review more difficult? Are you considering new plants that bloom in this timeframe?

is the Laserpitium siler related to the Daucus carota....or maybe Ammi majus? They look almost identical.

      It's in the same family.
