Peace and joy to you all.
今天和各位講中道行
Today I'm going to talk about
the deed of the Middle Way.
所謂中道行
The deed of the Middle Way
所以就不要偏左、不要偏右
neither stresses on left nor right.
It's not lopsided.
要中道
We need the Middle Way.
各位大家自己想想
Think about it.
你的言行舉止、思想等等
Judging from your speech, behavior,
or thinking, etc.,
你是屬於左派呢
what do you think you are: leftist,
還屬於右派呢
or rightist?
這個都是太偏了
Either one is still too partial.
最好的能學習中道
It's best to learn to keep the Middle Way.
這個中道我們看
As we see it, the Middle Way is like
在高速公路上行走
driving on a highway
這有向東、向西的
which is either eastbound, westbound,
向南、向北的
southbound, or northbound.
不管你怎麼樣
But no matter what direction it goes,
兩邊的高速公路
between the lanes of the highway
中間一個分隔島
there is a traffic divisional island.
那個分隔島就中道
The traffic divisional island
is the Middle Way.
因為有了中道
Because of the Middle Way,
就不要讓你們左右不要來相碰
the left lane won't collide with the right.
不要對立
There won't be any opposition
不要鬥爭
or conflict.
各行其道
Each goes his own way.
這個中道就是一個和平
The Middle Way is the path of peace,
中庸之道
and the doctrine of mean.
你就是汽車四個輪子
A car has four wheels.
四個輪子它中間有一個空間
Between the four wheels
there is a space
這個空間讓四個輪子平衡
so that the four wheels
maintain the equilibrium.
所以中道就表示我們人生
So the Middle Way teaches us that
in our life,
你不要做人太冷淡
don't be too indifferent, tepid,
冷冰冰的
or lukewarm.
人家接觸你
If people
都感不到一點生氣、熱氣
can't feel your enthusiasm,
他不會跟你做朋友
they just don't want to
become friends with you.
你太熱了
However, if you're too enthusiastic
熱烘烘的
and full-hearted,
人家都受不了
they can't stand it.
唉呀 這個太熱情了
They might say:
How zealous you're!
我受不了
I can't stand you!
你今天要請客 明天要送禮
Today you treat them to a dinner,
tomorrow you offer them gifts.
我受不了
They just can't stand it.
所以不要太冷也不要太熱
So avoid being too lukewarm
or too fervent.
要中道
Apply the Middle Way.
中道在佛法裡面
The Buddha Dharma speaks of
這中道緣起
the dependent origination
of the Middle Way.
眾緣所生
Things depend on innumerable
causes and conditions,
它不是靠一個的
rather than relying on just one.
它這是大家和合
They depend on the union
都會一起的
of various causes and conditions.
宇宙之間
The universe
沒有東西南北
sees no directions of
north, east, south, west,
東西南北都站在自己的立場講
as they are just relative to an observer.
整個的都是一個地球
The entire globe
一個圓形的
is round-shaped.
所以佛教不講直線的
So Buddhism never mentions linearity.
生了要死 死了要生
Birth precedes death,
death precedes birth.
生老病死
Birth, old age, sickness and death
它是圓形的
form a cycle,
春夏秋冬都是圓形的
so do spring, summer, autumn and winter
我成住壞空
and formation, abiding,
destruction and emptiness.
我這都是
It is a fact that things
這成了要住 住了壞 壞了空
abide, go bad, and vanish
soon after they formed,
這個大樓建起來了
After a building is erected,
幾百年又壞了
it will collapse after several hundred years.
壞了又空了又再有了
After destruction and emptiness
there comes formation again.
空即是色 色即是空
Emptiness is form,
form is emptiness.
因緣生就有
Things conditionally arise
因緣滅就沒有
and cease.
都是諸法因緣生
The dharmas arise on cause and condition.
諸法因緣滅
The dharmas cease on cause and condition.
這個就叫作中道
This is called the Middle Way.
我們信佛教
Buddhism that we take faith in
佛教最主要的真理是中道義
speaks of one major truth -
the Middle Way.
不偏左也不偏右
It neither steers to the left nor right.
做人要合乎中道
A man should conform to the Middle Way.
也不要
Don't overemphasize
或者我一定要是東方的文化
too much either on the Eastern culture
一定西方的文化
or the Western culture ;
一定注重生
or life
還有的人注重死
or death.
都不要
Never do that.
不二門
The dharma gate of non-duality is:
生死不二
life and death is non-dual ;
有無不二
existence and non-existence is non-dual ;
事理不二
theory and practice is non-dual.
中道
This is the Middle Way.
這是我們做人處事
To behave and handle things
in a better way,
最好的就是懂得中道的緣起
the best is for us to know the dependent
origination of the Middle Way.
