GROWING SHIITAKE MUSHROOMS ON LOGS!

- Hey guys! Today we are inoculating vine maple logs (3in diameter) with Shiitake mushroom plug spawn! The plugs are colonized with mycelium from Shiitake mushrooms (which are absolutely delicious if you have never tried them) and you drill into the logs, hammer in the plugs, seal it with wax and wait!
For each inch in diameter of the logs, that is 1 year of fruiting. (we should get about 3 years)
We took down some vine maples this year and had no plans for them, so instead of just using it for firewood, we decided to try inoculating the logs with Shiitake mushrooms to see if we could get some! It is not the ideal wood type, but it will likely work!
It will take a year or more to see what we get, but we will keep you all updated!

As someone who has spent countless hours making candles, I have to point out that Zack did a great job using a double boiler and not the microwave for the wax lol.

My parents go mushroom picking in random forests in the summer. You can also do that if you are somewhat familiar with what mushrooms are good and which ones aren’t. That way, you don’t need to wait a year 😂

You got me in a mood. This week, Easter, then our youngest kids, our twin's birthday was yesterday. In a funk because my husband is dead, and thinking about him at all the older kids' birthdays and he should have been here. A big grief funk. They're almost done with school todayt. I have had seeds, soil and a ton of mini pots, all sitting in bags. Today we're planting them.

Ugh! We tried to do this 3 years in a row and it didn’t work for us. I don’t think Northern Va was an appropriate climate for growing them in the log outside. I think you would really enjoy Gardening with Claudia on FB. She is the head gardener at Tyler Place resort in Vermont. She has amazing ideas for organic gardening...this woman is truly gifted and so knowledgeable. She makes her own teas and has classes on how to make beauty products, health teas, tinctures, etc. Her gardens at Tyler Place are truly inspiring.
That is such a cool birthday idea. You two doing things together is so fun to watch. You two are a great team!

@@molleirose Yes! Funnily enough at the exact time Zach and Kristi bought this place, me and my partner bought our own little cottage in the woods! Except we live in Scotland and our house is smaller and doesn't have as much land because we're right next to an old castle and there's some other houses too so we're not quite as secluded. That might be why i vibe so much with this channel now though.
