Tudor Black Bay GMT - Why I love it, and why it has to leave… REVIEW!

  • I’ve loved the Tudor Black Bay GMT for three years now but even though I think it’s the perfect watch, it has sadly come to the point that it has to leave my collection… 😞
    Why you might wonder? I ask myself the same question every day…
    A little hint: Rolex and Omega…
    I try to answer the question in this video!
    Let’s see if I did a good job convincing myself…

    If you don't wear it, then keep it for the future.
    Due to its affordability and fairly low price in the high quality watch market, there's a very good chance it will become a future classic.
    I can remember back in 1978, buying my first Rolex at the AD in Cardiff.
    In those days It was the cheapest Rolex in the catalogue, the Explorer 1655 Orange Hand, and it retailed for a low £524. Oh Boy those were the days, an affordable Rolex, you could see in the ADs window, walk into the showroom, and buy, if you had the money.
    It was still a lot of money back in the 1970s, but nobody liked the watch, and dealers found difficulty in selling them.
    When a certain Steve McQueen was seen wearing one, back in the 1980s, people took interest, and now the Rolex 1655 is hot property, selling for large sums of money.
    The Tudor GMT is an affordable, high quality watch, with associations with Rolex, so i can see it retaining its value over the years.
    A watch worth holding onto if you can justify keeping it for the future.

    For those times when you don't want people to know you have a Rolex, the Tudor is a Godsend! Personally, I love mine. No issues. I also receive a lot of compliments. It sits perfectly on my 21 cm wrist. Next acquisition is the Aqua Terra Small Seconds. That might make my Explorer a bit lonely. Beautiful video work, BTW. I didn't realize that Paul Thorpe did hand modeling. :))

    Understandable choice and it makes sense. Stupendous video quality by the way! That Tudor GMT although used looked so crisp and good. Has been on my mind for a long time. A bit hesitant because of the date issue but even more because of the aluminium bezel. Saw somebody being turned off instantly after having it for a week and accidentally scratching the bezel heavily in a collision. I don't think I could stand that. But it's still tempting.

    • @backintimewatches
      @backintimewatches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you 🙏 I'm glad you liked the video 😊
      As for the date issue... Tudor now have five years of warranty on their watches. If the issue presents itself during that period, they'll take care of it. If it doesn't, well, then you're lucky and don't have to worry about it. Either way, I wouldn't loose any sleep about it :)
      About the aluminium bezel... I've owned watches for over 20 years, many of them with aluminium bezels, and never scratched one. And the domed sapphire is actually the first thing to take a hit anyway. And IF you scratch it, it will not cost that much to replace since it's aluminium 👍
      I mean, all watches had aluminium bezels (except for those without bezels and those with stainless steel) up until recently, when many started to use ceramic.

      I love my one. I’m 95% sure that the date wheel issue was on the earlier models released and has since been rectified on all current models. The bezel is a shame it couldn’t be ceramic but I am clumsy and it’s not easy to scratch. Plus the domed sapphire Crystal standing proud helps protect it a little too. It’s a comfortable watch. Amazing quality for money my only nit pick is the thickness. Does not slip under a cuff easily. And the riveted bracelet has a marmite effect but it’s fitting for the era it’s trying to pay homage too. Well worth the buy though! It’s grown on me a lot.

    I dunno, I’d take the Tudor all day, that’s why watch collecting is great, we can all enjoy what fits our own personality. I also have the Longines Conquest 39mm black instead of the Rolex Explorer. Amazing quality and heritage and $9,000 less.

  • @vonkruel
    @vonkruel 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    It's a beautiful watch. In some ways it's a good thing to not be swimming in money, otherwise we'd hoard things that somebody else would enjoy & appreciate more than us. Mechanical watches need to run, so if you're not wearing it then it becomes a job to wind it occasionally for preventative maintenance. I've set a limit of 10 watches for myself, which is already a bit high but I'm willing to indulge my urge to collect up to a point.

    • @backintimewatches

    If you are a watch collector, in twenty years you will regret your decission. Twenty years from now, the Tudor GMT will be a collector’s piece just by the fact that it somehow managed to "dent the famous crown". Never sell a watch you like to buy something you like more because you will regret it in time...its like selling a Porsche because you now feel a Cadillac more comfortable...anyway...Enjoy your new Rolex!

    My Tudor Pelagos, I got when looking for a Black Bay 58. I thought Tudor had treated the Vietnam vets well in a documentary I saw, where Tudor restored the vet's watch that had been shot up in Vietnam years ago and he had kept all those years, and Tudor fixed it for him, so i resolved to try one of their watches. SoI was going in for a Black Bay 58, and when I got to the watch store, the Tudor Pelagos was so good looking I could no longer look at the Black Bay 58. So i got the Pelagos without knowing much about it, and i was well rewarded. It has a super accuracy of -1 second per day, well in superlative chronometer specifications. My favorite watch. Thanks Tudor. I have an Omega Seamaster, but I like my Tudor better.

    I don't honestly love Tudor watches but I'm really considering buying thr GMT and a BB58 as they are literally "beater" watches that will retain value no matter what I do to them. And if I just have them lying around it's very likely that they will appreciate in value especially in good condition. I do see Tudor discontinuing the pepsi GMT, the blue bay 58 and probably gilt dial bb58 eventually for other updated models.
