  • In this video, I showcase the various varieties I grow on site and the pros & cons I've experienced with them. Mulberry trees are one of my favorite fruit trees due to how abundant they are and how tough they are. I highly recommend growing these.

    I agree that the Pakistan is more sensitive to cold. I lost my 4 yr. old tree a couple of yrs. ago when we had a late freeze. The nursery said you have to build a big pile of mulch around it to protect the roots. I got a Silk Hope mulberry and it is now 2 yrs. and has lots of small fruit, and I'm looking forward to them ripening this summer. Great video, thank you for showing these varieties.

    We love our mulberry trees. They are all super sweet and we love the distinct mulberry flavor 💚

    Farmers around here consider mulberries a pest. But when I was growing up, my dad had one growing out in the pasture. It was huge, and I was a country "feral" child 😂. Like my city counterparts, I left the house in the morning and came home for supper (Mom packed me a lunch), and my dog would go along to chase rabbits. I would eat those mulberries whenever they got ripe. I'm sure the steers loved them, but they were my dessert when I found them. I've never made anything with them, because I've never had one that produced well. My mother-in-law has a story about making a mulberry pie for my father-in-law soon after they were married. It did not go over😢

      You peaked my curiosity with the story of the pie! Lol
      I also was a "feral" child and some of my best memories were climbing huge fruit trees like apples in Deadwood, South Dakota. I believe those trees had an influence on me and led me to where I am.
      Thank you for sharing your memories!

      There is a lot of misinformation about mulberries. The males only produce pollen, and there are city and state ordinances against having male trees. Many nurseries opt to not sell them because of that.
      I remember searching a number of years ago and called a nursery, and the guy was very rude and short on the phone and said "they are illegal!" LOL, I was surprised to hear that from someone working there. You'll absolutely love the trees when they begin to produce. More fruit than you could ever eat in a season.

      Do you know the variety?

      @@DesertGardensHomesteadno. They are very small fruit and send up a lot of suckers. I'd like to get a larger fruit that falls for my sheep, assuming they will eat the fruit. I may cut a fruited branch and give it to them. See if the eat the leaves and fruit.

    Have you had any problems with your trees? Pests, diseases, weather related issues?

    • @DesertGardensHomestead
      @DesertGardensHomestead  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not in many years. Had some stress last year from the heat and lack of rain, but nothing severe. Pests are almost obsolete at this point because I encourage ecosystem and have more than ample predators. Disease isn't an issue with good soil, unless the tree is weak by other means.
