Thanks for sharing and explaining all these great techniques. You're a great teacher. I really appreciate it. I went back and watched every one of your videos since I found your channel. Glad you recovered from the Covid. Take care! Happy New Year from Pennsylvania!
Another top repair Max, buying that proprietary item, and modifying it, rather than stock bearing material is a lot cheaper, good to see it being done ✔. Good to hear you're getting over the Covid. Thanks for sharing 👍
fun video, thanks for sharing, there are some interesting video's from back east India, Pakistan. some of those guys have a tool for the lathe that performs the task of oil groves very well. it plunges in and out of the bore as the lathe turns. the depth of plunge is adjustable as well. they make very nice figure eights. love your channel.
Hi Max, my 13" lathe has the translation gears coupled together with a single key on the coupler and large circlip with a sealed ball bearing to run on, no lubrication required, probably same as your Taiwanese lathe. My Dean Smith & Grace was even better, separate gear train running in oil driving feed shaft, not driven by noisy change gears, simply swung the banjo out to disengage the lead screw when not threading. Hate the sound of noisy change gears at higher speeds. I use motor cycle chain lube on my lathes, sticks like shit to a blanket!
Gday Max, I’ve never seen that technique used for oil grooves, I can see how you’d shit ya duds doing a big bush, great job and good to hear your as good as over covid, cheers
Cheers . That covid thing is a right pain in the ass to get . Fuckin sore throat like you would not believe . Stay away from public places like casino's where i got it ! 👍
Hi Max - I use Ifanger boring bars - In new zealand the agent is Trade Tools and they sell on Trademe - you can get different shape heads - grooving , 55 degree , 60 degree , boring to a shoulder , boring through and acme - And different size,s I made up an adaptor so I can use the ifanger heads with my Boring head on the mill they also make solid bars with 8mm and 10mm shanks But you probably already know this Thanks I enjoy your video's and Like you I personalise my machines to how how I think it should be done oil grooves on the tailstock more lubrication points
@@laurieosborne7695 Lol , my one came from NZ . I am from Wellington & i think i still have my Trade Tools pocket booklet with decimals , tapping sizes etc from my 1st year apprentice days in 1982 !
The one concern I have is that the thinner wall of the bored sleeve will crush noticeably when pressed in. I think I would've done the bore after pressing the bushing into the spline.
@@swanvalleymachineshop I watched the entire presentation. I'm not faulting the outcome at all but suggesting that us mere mortals need to consider the potential for failure when performing such an assembly.
@@dnechodom Machining a thin wall bush after pressing in, would allow the stress contained within it, to reduce, and possibly allow the bush to relax and come loose. Possion ratio.
Buggered if i know . Possibly the tool can lift up just enough to relieve itself before it starts to dig in & chatter like it would the conventional way . That method used to be common on rear mount tool posts . 👍
I've nearly spat my coffee all over my iPad! 'Like a cock in a shirtsleeve' lol never heard that one before, the Antipodean version of the English ' Prick in a bucket' which is even bloody worse! I'll carry on watching now! Great job of the bush Max. Looking forward to seeing the sliding stud in next video.
Not sure if I'd be brave enough to cut the oil groove using that method Max, unless I had plenty of spare stock to make a new sleeve and some clean underwear ;)
Thanks Max, Great tip for the oil grooves, need to try and remember that. There’s a bloke on TH-cam, Steve Mckinley 67 who has a homemade grooving attachment that’s worth a look, nice bit of kit. Cheers th-cam.com/video/h9cp76kuMoI/w-d-xo.html Here’s the link
Found this channel today from Curtis at CEE. You are one cool dude, thanks for sharing.
Cheers . 👍
Super cool video. The fit on that bushing looked to be perfect👌 Nice work 👍🙂
Thanks . 👍
Hello Max,
Super cool video, thank you. Great to learn how to put the oil groove in the bush. Pleased to hear the COVID has gone.
Take care.
Paul,,
Thanks . Covid is something you don't want in a hurry ! 👍
Never seen those style of threading bars before, look very handy, nice work on the part
They have replaceable ends that screw on . 👍
Ilfanger is the brand, very nice tools, pricy but quality gear.
Yea, I would have showed off that surface finish on the spline as well. That was pretty amazing.
Cheers. 👍
Always enjoyable, wishing you a prosperous and tranquil 2023
Thanks . It will be a crazy busy 2023 ! 👍

Max, especially enjoyed the spiral oil groove demonstration. Gonna have to try that on my Southbend 10K. Thanks from MI- mjm
No worries . I have done them on my 10K ! 👍

Good Job on the bushing. I need to do this very same thing on my little Southbend but never can find the time.
Hi Nik . Yes one of those jobs we just keep putting off ! 👍
Nicely saved Max. Loved the oil groove part, never done that before, I bet it was intimidating as a young guy on parts that big lol. Cheers, Jon
Thanks Jon . Just a bit much wobble in it to let pass ! 👍
All the best Max for the New Year. I had a nice visit from Uncle Bruce the other week.
Thanks . Yes , i heard the old bugger was up your way ! 👍
Top-job, Max...learned something....love it....cheers.
Thanks . 👍
Never seen that trick before doing the oil groove! Great stuff!
Thanks 👍
Another awesome one. I never cease to learn something new, watching your videos. 👍👍👍
Cheers Ian . 👍
Good one Max. That coupler looks a lot like my Harrison M250 from jolly ol’ England. Good fix!
Cheers Dan . 👍
Congrats on the Harrison M250. I have one too. I am in the UK though. Its good to see there are so many across the pond.
Enjoyed…wishing you good health

2023 is going to be a very busy year . Will be glad when it's over !!! 👍
Very nice oil groove! Think I will give that a try one day.
Thanks . Takes a bit of practice to get used to the concept . 👍
Happy New year's Max Glad you're feeling better.
Thanks . Bloody good to be over that crap ! I hear China has brewed up another variant . 👍

I wanted to use needle rollers but there was not enough room . The chain lube is a good idea , might steal that one ! 👍

They are . You don't happen to know who the agents are , i need a tip for my lager one . 👍

I think Max has been around long enough to take that all into account. He has heaps more practical experience than most of us.
Did you not watch when it was pressed in & measured . 👍

@@dnechodom No worries , if it was like a really thin wall bush i would have bored it in situ straight up . 👍
Well Max, that bush will outlast us and, after the shaft is done, the tofnol gears should last just as long.
Hopefully , there was not enough room for needle rollers ! 👍
Recon that bush would last longer than needle rollers in that position anyway.
Na, top job.
nice aproach with the oilgroove !

Thanks 👍
I guess you could have setup a carriage stop so that the spiral stopped in the other end groove ?
Probably could have if i had one ! It would hit the stop with a hell of a wack ! 👍
Making oil groves? Don't think and go for it. And hope for the best. That's my style :)

As Max said, the pucker factor was really high the first time he tried it.
I don't think i have screwed up a groove yet , still plenty of time left to do that ! 👍
its ok. i am wearing a mask

There is a few different versions of that tool around . A lot of work to make but useful to have laying around . 👍
