    Thanks a ton for this video (and the turn signal switch one, related). It was absolutely critical in helping me tear down and reassemble a column in only 26 tries. 😆Joined your Patreon as thanks. Your vids are just the right level of info for hobbyist auto repair guys like me. Really appreciate it.

    Big thumbs up. I have a different vehicle, but got a great education from this. Without it, I would have been tempted to try steering column work with it installed in the car. Once gain, you guys have saved us amateurs from busted knuckles, wasted time, broken parts, and a few naughty words.
    From this video, it's easy to see why pre-1960 cars and trucks had the shifter column and turn signal wiring separate from the steering column. Must've been some mechanics who groaned when the manufacturers began putting everything in a single tube.

    I've done several of these myself on my '68 Torino/Ranchero/Fairlane columns and I just wanted to comment on the carriage bolts that Cam points out at 13:12 that hold the collar to the column. I've encountered quite regularly that the openings that the carriage bolts are supposed to catch on have been damaged by someone over-tightening those carriage bolts, to the point that the carriage bolts won't catch the opening like Cam describes they should. These seem to be a common weak point and are definitely a spot worth inspecting before you try to put everything back together. Otherwise you get to feed those wires back through and start that whole process over again.

    My 63 wagon has the same setup for column shift auto. I actually used the upper collar from a comet to get an indicator light behind the shift plate and a shrouded shifter indicator plate from a galaxie. Just to be different. Even the steering wheels up into the 70’s trucks are the same for the early falcon. It’s a tedious job but makes a big difference inside the cab.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's actually a really good idea, we just picked up a 63 Ford or that has the old style like you're referring to. No I'm not sure which way to go lol

    You know that your shifters etc... are no the wrong side of the car for us in Australia, but youve been a great help and enjoy your content Mate. I did this on an Auto over here solo and you need a second set of hands :) It had the past life over-tightening issues. Imagine you all in the US if you had a steering box on the exhaust side for a six and all the linkages had to come up and over the gearbox to the other side! The US has it easy :)

    On these, where is the light for the gear indicator located? I didn't see it. I'm not so much familiar with the falcon or truck columns. But recently had to find the correct turn signal switch for my '64 galaxie which I never did. The biggest problem were all the ones i ordered ended up being floor shift models and the horn button i believe it was, is where the light is for the indicator on a column shift so wouldn't work. I have swingaway column but a standard column shift switch is the same except the length of the wire. In end i looked at pictures and said i'll get that one. We had to trace which wire went where and the clocking was off a little for the canceling but i got working turn signals which is the main goal. Most of the time talking to parts people is the book says a stationary column switch does not work in swingaway. Several years ago i had a used one and put it in there trying to figure out a tail light issue. Worked fine with just extending the wires. TS wasn't the issue so put my original one back in and sold the other...dummy me!

    I am working on a 1978-79 F100 Automatic column and find it to be much the same, but different in important ways. The column I am rebuilding has been apart before, so I am not quite sure what pieces are missing, or have been interchanged for something else. The shift lever "detent" pin has only the outer spring and no cap at the top like the one in your video. There is significant wear on both the upper [turn signal housing] and lower flange [shifter housing] where they meet. Should there be a nylon thrust, wave washer be there between the two mating surfaces? I did a 1966 Galaxie that had never been apart before and there was a 1 5/8 inch nylon wave washer there between the two surfaces. I have seen such a nylon washer in use in the 1970's Mustang/Cougar tilt columns and they are impossible to find with out a OEM part number. Any help that anyone can offer would be sincerely appreciated. Will

    Can this repair be done without taking out the column and will those parts repair a sloppy shift selector when I put my truck in any gear it doesn’t give me strong feedback to confirm I’m in the correct gear

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think it probably could as long as the selector down at the end of the column is in good enough shape. Remember that some of your feedback comes from the transmission as well as the stuff inside of the column.

    It's a lot easier to leave the column in the truck when you do that. Should not take more than hour to an hour and a half. Three speeds were the worst especially when the reinforcement piece on the shift tube broke, very seldom took in shop to fix, usually fixed them where they broke field, side of the road parking lot, wherever it broke.

    • @AutoRestoMod
      @AutoRestoMod  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Normally I would have left it in the truck, but the bottom part of it being the way it was in the truck I decided to pull it to make sure we didn't have a problem down the bottom of the column.

      I'm taking mine apart soon. If I leave steering column on, can I disassemble enough to see if shifter housing is broke? Mine bumps from park to reverse very easily. If I have to replace shift collar will I have to disconnect and pull wire harness? 1968 f-250. No power steering. Thanks

    • @brucethoel3636
      @brucethoel3636 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @eekwiet your shifter indent stop is broken. It's a thin piece that the shift lever catches on. There is piece of metal that sticks up on the shifter. Pull both on the shifter disengaged it. The thin metal piece is broken
