  • In 1998, a Need for Speed title was released that took racing games to a whole other level for me. It combined arcade racing, tons of options, and multiplayer from the gods. Here is my review.

    Episode Notes:
    1. Playstation version on real hardware.
    2. PC version is original game with updated patch for 1080p and widescreen.
    3. The mainline Need for Speed games would stay Playstation console exclusive for years. It wouldn't be until the Xbox and Gamecube that they would branch out.
    4. I often wonder if the Saturn could have done this. The first game looked great on the Saturn, but all that extra lighting might have been too much.
    5. 2005's Need for Speed Most Wanted is another favorites of mine for many of the same reasons.
    6. I still own my original PC version.
    7. I own the rare Collectors Edition of the PS1 game.
    8. I'd love to see this game get reissued for modern machines.

NFS 2 with the 3dfx patch or NFS 3 on the PC with a 3dfx card were awesome times back in those days!
2 things not mentioned in this review:
    1. In NFS 3 on the PC it is possible to create/import custom cars and do wacky stuff with that.
    2. The LAN multiplayer aspects of those games on the PC. Up to 8 players were seriously good times!
Back in those days it was one of many games like the original Half Life, Counter Strike 1.6, Command & Conquer/Red Alert & Starcraft that my friends and I played at a lot of LAN parties!

@@tristanholley7141 Look, I do prefer glide mode, I've played it in Glide mode and also in D3D mode, I really didn't see much of a difference. In fact if anything it looks a little worse in glide because a voodoo didn't have good fps with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering at 800x600 when compared to a GeForce or Radeon. Ironically, Glide mode now looks the best on modern systems with a glide wrapper and fan patch implemented, especially since the glide wrapper can convert any game to native 32bit color.

They came back with the elegant Road & Track style reverence and presentation for the cars, and the gameplay was super awesome. I highly recommend you find that game for whatever system you can and play it. They even just released a fresh remaster, although if you're on PC, the original release holds up just fine.

Hot pursuit 2 was the final goodbye to the classic need for speed legacy that no one expected, I enjoy the underground era, but I really miss the classic need for speed concept! Both versions were my childhood. I hold them in such high regard, that I find it hard to even pick which one is superior. The PSX version will always hold a special place in my heart though because it was a true companion when I was going through a rough patch in my life - I'd be sitting in my home, dead of night, just blasting around the secret tracks in the CLK-GTR. It was a surreal, but intensely atmospheric experience.
I wish they had finished the alternate version of Empire City, since that does exist in the PSX version unfinished.

I also liked NFS Road Challenge a lot, especially when you played as a cop!

I got this game for pc through scholastic book club magazine back in elementary school and it was the only thing from the magazine I ever asked my mom to buy me (90% of the time we didnt have enough extra cash for games) but luckily it was around my birthday and she agreed to buy it. My dad got a plugin controller for the pc and it was by far one of my most played pc games then. Still have the game tucked away in a box.

The PC version looks like an early dreamcast title in some tracks. Was fun in college inviting a die hard console gaming friend to the room I had my PC set up, showing them not only how great console ports looked with 3D acceleration but also playstation + N64 games on emulators in VGA res. Back in 1998 we got both a ps1 and n64 emulator while the consoles were current and both emulators ran a large collection of games full speed. Bleem for ps1 games and UltraHLE for n64 games.

I had NFS3 for playstation. PLAYED IT ENDLESSLY and always showed it off to my friends. The graphics blew my mind. THEN I saw the PC version on a pc at someone's house my father brought me to. I KNEW I needed to somehow get this. So I begged my mom for a 3d card (we had a Pentium 233, 32MB ram and just onboard what, 1mb video?). Mom was a single parent on welfare so we pretty much had zero money but somehow, she got me a 3d card. The shop she brought it to put in a freaking Voodoo 3 2000 pci. MY JOURNEY HAD JUST BEGUN. NFSIII melted my brain. Quake 3 stole my nights. Unreal Tournament WHAAAAAAAAAT. I still have the PC with all of the games on it and I play it regularly! I did some upgrade to a Pentium 3 and 128mb ram so I could play them smoother tho. The 90's were the brightest in gaming. Now it's just pump out crap every day to the masses. We get very few quality releases. Hell, we get very few FINISHED releases.

IMO this was the best Need for Speed. The original was fun and memorable. The 2nd one was kind of punishing but only because the controls were so bad. The 4th was rediculous with the rain and again punishing controls.

I bought this game and really loved it, but there was another dimension for me - at the time, there were websites out there that created custom car models for the PC version that could be dropped into the cars folders, which allowed me to quite literally CHOOSE the cars I could have in the game! It's a shame that my hard drive died, and I lost them all. Those websites have since vanished, but the memories of a game that I made my own are still fresh in my mind so many years later...

I don't know about you man, but the electronic music in this game by Rom Di Prisco left a huge impression on me when it first came out, and has still remained as some of my favorite VGM compositions. Listen to the track Romulus III 😎.
Yeah, this game blew my mind back in the day. I spent so many hours playing it that I damn near memorized every track, and was able to set records without crashing, while at full speed the whole time, AND with the hidden El Nino car! Lol. Crazy good times.

Cool Story: this game was the first 3d racing game that me and a friend ever played.
His family was celebrating his grandma anniversary and invited me to the party as well, we started playing NFS Hot Pursuit on his brand new PS1 but we were stuck taking turns in a certain race which was too difficulty for both of us.
As soon as my turn came (for the 20th or so time) his family asked for his help to clean up the dishes, while he was there, i managed to beat the race, and soon i was waiting for the game to save, the lights went out on the city, the game failed to save, i told him i truly managed to beat that stage, but he didn't believe me, that was simply too hard for him to believe.

Love this and High Stakes. And Hot Pursuit 2 (PS2) gave me vibes of those games too. I just couldn't see NFS going back to this, simply because of EA Games. EA Seattle and Blackbox were hands down some of the best developer teams EA ever had

The music isn't memorable? Lmao, I feel bad for you. I still play these tracks over twenty years later and know by name both the main artists behind the tracks in the game. Honesty, it's insane to believe that this game still holds such a cherished spot in my childhood. I'm 32 now. I started playing this before my tenth birthday and I still remember every track and every piece of music that accompanied along with the main menu themes.

Agreed. This was one of very few PS1 racers that really resonated with me (preferring Sega's approach generally) but this was epic. I remember when I was working in a game shop at the time and me and my colleaguespent a whole afternoon playing this - way better than Gran Turismo. Super fun, super frenetic, fantastic performance from the PS1 hardware Tight controls meant you were able to absolutely push the limits and feel like you were right on the edge of losing it.
Other thing I distinctly remember is that this game supported the short lived DualAnalogue controller (the one with the concave control sticks and the precursor to the Dual Shock controller) believe it meant the controls were like an RC car i.e. one stick controlling acceleration and braking, the other steering. Worked really well.
Also the tracks were some of the better designed tracks from a non Sega or Namco racer. A true gem!

Great video! This is the first time I've played this game and I really enjoyed it. I wouldn't normally go for a NFS game, I'm more Ridge Racer, but in some aspects this is better than Ridge Racer Type 4, which came out at a similar time in 1998. The only gripe is if you hit a tree or hit a head on side track object you can easily loose 3-4 places in a race. But otherwise all good. Would you try the new Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered version? Does it have the same feel as the PS1 game?

Need for Speed 3 on PC was amazing at the time.... went from playing old games like Test Drive, Stunt Drivin, then the original NFS to this was outstanding. Never owned a Playstation until after playing the PC version and thought it was trash...actually sold the Playstation soon after... Total PC master-racer back then as the only games I couldn't really get on the PC were the 3D fighters.
