    Very informative video, thank you! I have had sync issues with my VHS (Panasonic NV-FS200) and betamax (Sony SL-C30) player for a long time when connected to my PMS Crystalio II video processor. Apparently it only has a line based TBC, which isn't good enough. The VHS player also has a TBC, probably the same thing. The video would drop out (black screen) and the video processor would struggle to maintain sync. The on-screen display would spam all sorts of weird resolutions (e.g. 720x601). I ended up buying a Leitch DPS-575 which did the trick! Perfectly stable video. I'm using the SDI output since my video processor has input for it. So now I can actually view my tapes without annoying blackouts. Nice to see a video that explains and demonstrates what's going on. Again, thank you!

    This was kinda cool to hear about! In recent history I've also been a bit interested in how TV broadcasting works (both in the old analog days and now), so it's cool to hear from someone who has first-hand experience. Really crazy to hear about all the regulations there used to be, especially considering analog is so error-prone to begin with. Can't imagine how closely y'all had to monitor the equipment!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is the reason time base correction, and careful signal monitoring was so critical. Analog signals being so error prone needed to be made correct before transmitting to guard against interference to other services.

    Great video. I have a JVC VHS with TBC but when enabling it for home made videos I can see jagged edges as if the video is not being deinterlaced properly. The VCR is hooked to the input of a Panasonic DVD recorder and the display is a new LCD TV . Turning TBC off the video is less rock steady as expected but no jagged edges appear. Any idea on what might be happening? Greetings from Brazil

    Thanks for the demonstration on TBC with the Vidionics MX-1.
    It should be noticed, sometimes the TBC doesn’t work with a specific VCR or tape.
    In these instances, having the possibility of turning off the TBC becomes an advantage. This is specially true when the TBC is causing more damage than fixing the timing issue. On the Vidionics MX-1 the TBC cannot be turned Off. Only the Frame Rate Lock can be turned On/Off on this unit. A consideration to be taken before purchasing.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I found in every case that time breakers do more damage than good. The reason they even exist was for the broadcast world. To synchronize cameras and vtrs together and titlers so they could Jen lock and set the subcarrier phase exactly the same for mixing and switching using an analog switcher. In the digital world they're completely unnecessary if you have a proper capture card. Think about what a Time base corrector is doing it's digitizing your analog video to provide a correcting signal and then taking that digital signal and turning it back into an analog signal. Every time you digitize and convert back to analog you're going to reduce the high frequency content and the picture quality. A proper capture card doesn't care it will capture everything time base errors in all once it's in a digital bit stream it's easy to correct on the computer just like the TBC does. So for archiving time-based correctors are overrated and totally unnecessary. the only time they're necessary is when you want to do things like shrimp macrovision off of an analog signal to record it on to another analog input source such as a DVD recorder or another VCR that pukes because of the macrovision signal. Again a good capture card doesn't care. Most of the cheap ones will puke when a timing error is too great but the better ones don't care they just capture it all

    Delta gun CRTs are definitely the way to go with analog broadcast monitors. It wasn't until Trinitron came out that something was available which could rival the quality of a good calibrated delta-gun monitor. And to tell you how these things were made, they were made like a laboratory instrument; they would had been hand assembled all the way down to the CRT, and tweaked for hours on the bench. There is a good reason they cost so much- it's all the hand work which goes in to something which absolutely has to perform flawlessly.

    • @12voltvids

      +douro20 yet the engineers would never use a trinitron tube for signal verification. The reason they gave. Trinitron were soft. Only 200 lines so even crapy video looked good.

    So, I am curious - How well does the time base corrector in a Video Toaster card (I am looking at possibly getting a Video Toaster 4000 for my Amiga 4000) work in comparison to the time base corrector demonstrated here?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +KG7UJH I don't know much about the toaster. I heard of it, but never went that route, I went the MX1 effects board, as it was being toured as the "toaster without the computer" solution. The MX1 served me well back in the linear editing days. It has 2 full frame infinite window TBC, and it really works to clean up the video, especially when it is placed in LOCKED operation, which forces all incoming video to FCC compliance. The only thing it can't do is be genlocked to external studio reference. So it couldn't be used as a production switcher tied to studio sync. It was designed for small studio use, or for remote truck applications, where up to 4 video sources, say tape playback, and live camera could be input into the truck, and then the output sent to microwave for relay back to studio. Does the job, and it is transparent as far as picture quality goes.

    So if I wanted to make my own home analog broadcast studio with VCR being one of the primary sources, I would need a time base corrector if the VCR is crappy cheap like this? Or simply if I want to capture the tape to a digital format? Because I'm thinking of backing up our cassette with personal memories into an MP4 file. It's my parents' wedding, my brother (then sister) in kindergarten and me as a newborn baby and a toddler. I'm not sure if there is anything else, but that's what it is. It's been shot throughout the years 1995-1997 or 1998. I might have to buy some VCR for VHS tapes second hand from people on the internet (our VCR went to the silicon heaven over a decade ago, it was a SONY one, though I don't remember the exact make - the model, because I never actually looked at it). I don't care about movies we had on VHS tapes, because I can simply go search online for movies if I want to see one. The point is we have this VHS tape with content I cannot find anywhere online and in order to watch it, I need to put it in VCR. What happens if I don't have a VCR? Well that's unfortunate, I cannot watch it. So I can eighter use some VHS restoration/backup service in town, or simply get myself a VCR, a TBC and a video capture device that converts the video into a digital format I can record into a hard disk. Chain is pretty simple: VCR → TBC → VCD (Video Capture Device) → PC to store the video file.

    The markings on the corners of the tube, I'm guessing those are supposed to be a guide to tell the engineer how the picture may look on a consumer TV with overscan?

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes framing for the camera operators. This monitor was the program monitor in a broadcast truck. I have the twin to this that was the effects preview monitor, and it doesn't have the framing mask. It is just on the surface of the tube. The monitor has normal and under scan mode. Normally it was run in under scan, and the framing marks would approximate the edge of the picture on an overscanned consumer set.

Cost more to ship than the unit auctioned for (bid was like 20,00 and the freight was 90.00 plug the cost of the plywood and foam. I think it ebded up costing about 150.00 by the time all the smoke cleared, and the fed ex guy was having a bad day and threw it off the back of the truck smashing the picture tube. That was my first bad experience with Ebay. The guy wanted his money back, and I said ok sure, here is your 20.00, minus the cost of the packing and plywood.Had fragile stickers all over it, and the goon just trashed it.

      That is one of many reason I don't mess with eBay. Or even craig's list here in the states.

      As for the DVDs couldn't you just use a DVD copying program? I might have told you this already but I many Tapes that I want to put on DVD or digital but my VCR is only mono I should get a stereo one. I can't believe they still use macrovision on DVDs.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +coondogtheman1234 Yes lots of ripping software for DVD. I haven't ripped a DVD since DVD Shrink was what everyone used. I don't have much use for DVD at all. I use the macro buster mainly so I can record DVDs from my cable box off the on demand service. They protect all the HBO On Demand titles that I want to backup, but the macro scrubber works wonders.As to Ebay, I have been screwed once, but that screwing cost me huge. What happened was I sold one of my old professional cameras to a buyer state side. It was fully functional, but was specifically stated that there was no warranty, and that returns would not be accepted, it went for 900.00. (The lens was worth over a grand by itself) The buyer promptly paid me, I waited until I had the funds in paypal, and then transferred the money out of paypal, and shipped the camera.5 days later I had my receipt that the buyer had received it, and I was happy.About 6 weeks passed, and I get this email from the buyer asking for his money back. Claims that it broke down. Well, I know that it was in good shape when I sold it, and the only reason I did sell it was because I had upgraded to my HD camera. The one I shot this video with to be exact. I was talking to one of the guys at work, and he told me about a horror story he had and told me to contact my credit card company right away and report the card on file with paypal as lost before the buyer filed a complaint because they would just charge my card, and they I are fighting with them.Paypal was still owned by Elon Musk at this time by the way, and I would never ever, as long as I live buy one of his cars just due to this experience incidentally. About 2 days later I get this message from Paypal that a chargeback has been filed against me, and they are trying to recover the funds but my credit card and bank account on file with them have been closed. (no kidding)They are demanding a new credit card number so they can recover the funds and will not even investigate until the funds are replaced.I also get a request from Ebay to supply them with information regarding the transaction. I comply and send them the required information, including video clips showing the unit functional.Months go by, and I get an email telling me that the buyers credit card issuer has sided with him, that he gets his money back, and I should work with the buyer to try to get my property returned.Ebay states that most transactions go smooth, but some transactions go sideways with buyers intent on committing fraud, and sellers takes this risk as a cost of doing business no different that shoplifting at a retailers place of business.In the end, paypal sent it to collections. I told them where to stuff it, and they f**ked my credit rating, which cost me probably 10 grand in extra interest charges on my mortgage. So no I don't deal with Ebay or Paypal, and I will never buy a Tesla. Even though Musk doesn't own Paypal anymore, he did when this fit hit the shan and when you are pissed at a company you are pissed with the man at the top.

    Thank you, 12voltvids, for all of the great repair videos! I'm curious, would this MX-1 being used as a time base corrector also work correctly when trying to capture video from a Betamax? Or is there some inherent difference in the time base signal?

    • @12voltvids

      It will work for any video signal and correct the time base. It does by reading in the video signal complete with jitter into memory and then reading it out with new sync added correcting the timing errors in the process.

    I am in the UK and so I'm using PAL. I have a cheap capture card (easycap) and it often drops the frame rate at certain points in the video for a few minutes, then goes back to normal.
    The device doesn't ever drop out though, and the choppy frame rate only ever appears when you play back the recording. It never appears in preview, whether it's recording or not. I am using Honestech TVR2.5, and find that I get fairly decent frame rates if I set it to DVD-NTSC mode. The frame rate using this mode isn't ideal, but it is consistant.
    My question is: Is this still a time base problem or is it something else? The reason I ask is that I don't want to splurge £99 on something that doesn't solve my problem!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I capture through a Hauppague HDPVR I never have dropped frames when capturing through my TBC, or capturing HD from my cable box. I do however have issues when capturing SD video without my TBC. I will experience freeze ups.Check out this demo: th-cam.com/video/qJKInMUw3A8A/w-d-xo.htmlt the end of this video I captured a segment without a TBC, and then ran the tape through the TBC and you will see that the glitch plays through just fine.Dropped frames could be your computer not being able to keep up. The way to test this is just plug your capture card into a camera (straight off the camera no tape) or a tuner or cable box. If it can record the off air signal or direct from a camera without dropping frames and the dropped frames only occur with tape playback, then you know that time base errors are the problem.

      "...just plug your capture card into a camera..." How do I go about doing this?
      I'm also not sure how my PC could be not keeping up. I have a Dell Vostro 260 with a 1tb WD green Hard drive; 8GB of RAM; Intel Core i3 and a Nvidia EVGA 750Ti Gpu. I know my PC isn't exactly top of the range but it's not slow. What could be causing this choppiness?
      The only possibility that I have thought of is that the Green hard drive is parking the heads when it's inactive and then coming back to life when the program releases the buffer to the drive, causing it to slow down? I have no idea!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Naturally you need a camera that has a composite type output. Even the new ones have a composite output, but with the new Sony's you need that special multi cable that breaks out that multi connector.If you hook the video out from your VCR into the capture card, and tune in a broadcast signal on the VCR tuner you will get a stable signal.If you cable box has A/V outputs you can do that too. I don't know how your cable boxes work over there. Ours here still have analog outputs in addition to the HDMI connectors so it is easy to connect the A/V out into other recording devices.

    • @LordSandwichII
      @LordSandwichII 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      12voltvids Oh right! Of course! Well I tried that and I haven't experienced choppiness so far, but I seems to happen at random, so I can't be sure. I need to do more testing...
      Edit: Tried it again with other programs running and it dropped a whole load of frames, so I think there may be something wrong with my machine.
      Alternatively, the software may be just not good enough to do what it's supposed to. Honestech TVR 2.5 has a fancy GUI, but that says nothing about it's performance. I've tried VirtualDub, but it doesn't deinterlace the frames, and its way of accounting for dropped frames is the slow down the audio!
      I don't want to pay for any software unless I can be sure that it will solve my problem...

    And thats just sync processing.
    It must have taken a lot of design cleverness to make it work.
    That monitor is a gut buster lol, it should come with a forklift truck :-D

      +zx8401ztv It actually is not that complicated circuit. All internal sync is generated by a single chip and genlocked to incoming video.

  • @andydelle4509

    Just a note on the CRT. Those CRTs are just consumer tubes that are hand picked for the best parameters. No broadcast monitor manufacture could afford to have custom CRTs made based on the limited broadcast market. One place I worked we had Sony BVM monitors in the VTR bridges. A replacement tube was about $1000. We just bought the 12in consumer tube for about $300 IIRC as a VTR bridge is not a color critical monitor application - at least in that facility. They also run at the same high voltage as a consumer TV as they are the same tube. Put 50kv on that tube? Well I don't want to be in the room when you do that😲

    Hello, I learned a lot from this video. I really didn't know what a TBC did before this. Just so happens, I'm in the middle of capturing all my old VHS tapes and I have a couple of questions. I'm using a Mitsubishi HS-U790 S-VHS deck for playback into a Hauppauge capture card using Virtualdub. I really haven't had too many issues, but I have a couple of tapes that have images that skew every now and then. Would I be better off with your Videonics TBC connected to my Mitsubishi or buying a VCR with a TBC such as a AG-5710 / AG-1980? I believe the TBC in the Videonics is better than the one built into any VCR. Thanks! Great videos!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Patrick W correct. An external tbc stores the entire frame and makes the sync stable. Most tbc built into VCRs only store a couple of lines of video, and even though they do correct color sync, they don't completely rebuild the video frame. I should do a demo to show what can happen when an unrecorded section is encountered without the tbc an with it.

      +12voltvids Wow, thanks for the quick answer! I'll go ahead and purchase an MX-1, looks like they can be had for $200 or less. I'll continue to use the Mitsubishi deck etc. I really didn't want to buy another piece of equipment but the MX-1 looks like a fun toy.. Speaking of Macrovision.. I remember in the mid 80's my father started dubbing VHS to Beta to get around that copy protection. The TBC's might have been very expensive back then or he just didn't know about them. All of those dubs really look mediocre these days, since they were all recorded at the slowest speeds.. In the early 90's he started renting laserdics and dubbing them to S-VHS which was a far superior source than VHS. Mostly always in the EP mode, so of course it looks blah today, but still much better than the dubs from VHS. I learned back then never to buy largely into any format. It was around when DVD came out my father had close to 600 tapes, most of which he never watched. What a waste of money.. I guess it was more of a hobby than anything. I keep my blu-ray collection to minimum because of this. There's always a new/better format coming.. Thanks for the help!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Patrick W That's like me. I used to dub laserdisc to s-vhs, but I would cheap out and punch the hole in a regular tape. Gave better results but not as good as a real SVHS tape.Laserdisk of course had no copy protection.I never bought many DVD disks, and even bluray I didn't buy into mucj of that either mainly because I don't watch a film more than once in general. The only thing I di watch more than once is live performences, mostly of the Jazz greats, but it is more to listen to, and appreciate the mastery that these greats like Davis, and Corea are. As it is my collection is in the hundreds of tapes and DVDs, but they are all self recorded from TV or satellite TV over the years. Most of these tapes were recorded and stored and never played. I knew a guy that had a massive VHS collection , and when DVD came out, he went and bought the entire collection over again. Had something like 10,000 movies on DVD, and then when Bluray came out he did it all over again, and literally gave away his DVDs. The man was a certified nut, in his 50's had no car, lived with his mother, and had about 100,000 worth of audio and video equipment. Worked as a radio technician. Had no teeth, because he had never been to a dentist, and a huge collection of movies.Then his mother died, and I don't know what happened to him after that because the shop he worked at closed up. I would see him from time to time when I would be in the store, and he was always bragging about his system. Would shake my head at the money he wasted on buying the same movie over and over. The perfect consumer from a marketers standpoint.

      @infinity999123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +12voltvids Oh yeah, I remember the punching the hole trick. We did that a couple of times. Looked pretty good if you recorded SP. It may have looked better than a real S tape in EP. It definitely was a different encoding because even the punched tapes wouldn't play back correctly in a non S machine. Of course the real S tapes were of a higher quality.. I can tell you can 99% of those tapes ended up in the trash. I only kept home movies and few things recorded off TV that you could never find today. For about 17 years or so my father rented most every new release and dubbed it, what a waste, especially since 90% of it was probably only watched once. Yeah, that guy you speak of does sound crazy for sure. I have nice stuff, but I'm not going to live with anyone to be able to afford 100k worth of equipment. I only buy movies I am going to watch more than once, or older movies on blu-ray that can't be rented.. Usually most titles are $10-$15 anyway, so no big deal. I am looking forward to picking up a 4k projector if they ever get down to about $3500 and some 4k blu-ray. I bet those will look nice.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Patrick W I would like to get a 4K OLED 65" set, not so much for movies, but for my own stuff I shoot in 4K. I produce some really nice scenery videos. Only a few of them I post on YT, most of my stuff is for my own enjoyment, or sold off. Lots of time lapse videos, so I really want to see them in 4K as I have spent the money for the cameras.I have a nice collection of laserdisc. Many were given to me, but I do like the old concert videos which are very rare these days, at least some of them are.Punching the hole in a VHS tape allowed the detection switch to think that an SVHS tape was loaded and turn on the high band circuits which pushed up the carrier frequency on the record modulator, and also cranked up the deviation of the FM modulator. So playback on a standard machine was not possible because the frequency deviation was too much for the demodulator. Video was recorded using frequency modulation, on a 1MHz carrier, just like FM radio.

I still have a Miro DC20 Plus PCI board from 1997/98...... it can capture SVHS PAL at 768x576 30 FPS in very decent quality...

      I am fully aware of this. The videonics mx1 is a full broadcast quality infinite window time base corrector. I use mine for just that and when digitizing customers 3rd generation home videos that they recorded in SLP speed. Can not understand the stupidity of people. They took their camcorder tapes, copied them to VHS, in SLP, then usually made a second copy of that tape and bring me that tape to digitize. There is not much there left to digitize and then they get upset with the quality. I show them how bad their tape looks and they hand over the cash and go away with a frown on their face.

That is why there is the gin switches. SO you can turn off the blue, and adjust the red green, then turn off the red and set the blue over the green, which is the reference color.I will go over that when I do make the video on this monitor.
