  • The result of a challenge put out by the Douglas Fir Plywood Association in the early 1950s, Thunderbird Hull #1's plywood construction, designed by Ben Seaborn and built by Ed Hoppen, revolutionized affordable sailboat building.
Come visit Thunderbird Hull #1 in the Maritime Gallery of the Harbor History Museum, Gig Harbor, WA.

I spent my entire childhood on this boat! Arlen Pomeroy was my father and owned her from the early 70's through the mid-80's. We lived on the North end of Lake Washington and our family of Mom, Dad and 5 kids sailed it every summer up into the Canadian Gulf Islands (even took it to Desolation Sound/Princess Louisa twice). Dad sailed/duck dodge with the Sloop Tavern Yacht Club though the late 70's. Lots of GREAT memories on this boat!!

This is a wonderful boat. I went to the shop that made it this last weekend, but the museum was closed so I just got to look at #2. I really like this boat. It is becoming not a matter of if but rather when - in regards to building one. My shop is just big enough.
