Really nice playing. These are the best acoustic sounds I've heard using the variax. I think this model sounds richer than the others, even the LP version with 2 humbuckers. The deeper tunings were gorgeous.
I am planning on releasing two sets of patches, one specifically for "working musicians" using the Variax, and another for any guitar and how to tweak to taste. Hopefully there will be enough interest as I do get these requests often. Please stay tuned!
Man, I need to get one of these again. The acoustic models are the best sims I've ever heard. No other acoustic sim I've heard and good a candle to these
I have popping if I strike as hard 4:29 - I've have 2 variax' & the helix since it's release...you should share your settings w/the world...nudge nudge - sounds brilliant :)
Since the Variax relies on piezo pickups in the bridge for all of its "modeled tones", the setup is critical as any additional fret buzz or neck issues will be misinterpreted by the piezos. Also they do eventually fail, but can be easily replaced when they do. I wrote a response to similar questions on the variax forum. Here is the link for reference. line6.com/support/topic/57868-variax-jtv-89f-replacement-piezo-pickups/#comment-428056 I am also planning on doing a video on the setup as I receive A LOT of these questions all the time. Stay tuned!
Nice playing. I found the first model most convincing. (I have two Variax guitars.) My feeling is that the Variax acoustic models just don't have the weight, the presence, of acoustic guitars. They're decent enough for use in place of having to carry two or three guitars, but they sound more like EQed electric guitars to me. And I find that the models on my Variax 500 sound better, to my ear, than the models on my JTV-89. I'd love to learn that first piece you played. Is it original or a cover? Is it tabbed out anywhere?
Hi David, agreed I would prefer to play my Taylor acoustic, but for cover gigs and many recording projects I've done the Variax models can be made to be very usable. As for the first piece I played it is a fingerstyle tune called Mister Lucky by the late great Buster Jones. Here is a link to his DVDs and tabs. www.chordmelodyguitarmusic.com/Buster-Jones-guitar-tab-tablature-books-DVDs.htm
Nice demo, I hadn't played my JVT89-F for a year, but just broke it out last week to trial my new Yamaha THR II 30. Re-discovering all the models and flexibility of the Variax.
Andrew, You said it Bro. I have the THR10 & THR10x, I play this daily even more than my Helix... 😳🦠☣️... Hope you are isolating and staying well Brother.. 👈🏽😷🤙🏽
@@jambo175 Yes, I have the Helix Floor, had it since June 2016, when it came out here in New Zealand. I Love it! Just updated to 3.15 on the weekend. Great update!
It does to a point. I have found for the most "realistic" tones, I have to modify individual string volumes on many of the models either using the workbench software or the Helix.
I'm rather disappointed in the acoustic sounds on my Variax. Yours sound great though. Did you do any tweaking using Workbench HD? If so, please tell me what those are.
Hi Sanford, the only tweaks I made in Workbench were to "level" the strings in all patches. My Variax piezos had some large differences in volume originally, although eventually I replaced a couple and made it much better, maybe I do a video on that repair. My experience has been that your results will vary greatly based on what you play the instrument through. Normal guitar amps don't have the range for acoustic guitars. Here I am playing through my Helix floor with a simple patch with only a preamp, eq, reverb, and occasionally a delay for solos.

@@jambo175 Thanks for the info, Jambo. I would be very interested in learning how to replace the piezos. I find the low E and A strings are quite boomy on my Variax Standard. One more question, if you don't mind. Do you find heavier string gauges make the acoustic models sound better? I'm wondering if switching from my light gauge strings to a medium gauge would give the acoustic models a "heavier", more acoustic guitar-like sound.
@@sanfordbath4326 I don't go to heavy as I gig with this guitar a lot and play many different styles with tons of solos and bends. I'm currently using Elixir Nanoweb 10-46. I think they work great with the piezos and last longer for me than most other strings.
Fair question, really just personal preference. I use a lot of the drop D and Baritone turnings, but I don't have any capo or higher tuning on this guitar. The piece I was playing was written up a whole step that's all.
makes it look so easy ... wow,,, a wizard for sure.. thanks

I'd love to see your Helix patches. These tones sound super responsive and open. Do you have a place to purchase or download?

Hi Andrew, thanks for posting. Greatly appreciate it. Makes me want to do more videos!
jambo175 you totally should!!!
Thanks for the video. Helped me buying my JTV.
Glad I could help
Any chance of you doing a “Jiffy Jam” tutorial? Lol thanks for the video

Could you do one of these with _just_ the guitar output? No drowning wells of reverb etc?
Ps: Nice playing!
I could, but what fun would that be? ;-)

That's great. Not sure if you're using a modeler, but the Helix products really allow you to get the most out of the Variax Guitars.

Why do you have a capo if you can set up the tuning twith the guitar. Any specific reason. I'm considering buying this guitar soon

Wow sounds just like a mic’d up acoustic
Sounds like a good acoustic-electric, which is to say, not like a mic’ed acoustic
Agreed
Which is what you have to do on stage with any acoustic guitar.
nice demo
Glad you think so!
