10 Red Road Court

  • March 2012. As the last resident moves out I take the red road lift to the 30th floor and some of the empty flats in 10 red road court. The flats were due to be demolished in 2009 but still seem to be stubbornly holding on...but as the ticking clock suggests, its now only a matter of months before they are gone forever as one more block is emptied and sealed off to the world.

    I moved to 10 Red Road from Germany in 1996 because I had decided to attend Glasgow Caledonian University, and the top floors were student housing at the time. I met a cute American exchange student from the 25th floor (I was on 26), and the rest is history. Unfortunately he couldn’t get a work visa, so I followed him to the US, but it was one of the toughest decisions I ever had to make. We got married in 97 and have two kids.
    We went back for the first time in 2019, and seeing it gone was heartbreaking. We have so many good memories there.
    I miss Scotland badly.

      The sad thing is even after 8 years it has still just mostly been left as rubble and nothing has been done there, I don't understand why homeless people couldn't have just lived there instead of it being completely demolished and nothing new being built

    I lived in 10/2 10 petershill court for a few years,plus 153 petershill drive 14/2,staying in the red road was a brilliant experience,the neighbours were a refugee family on one side and a lady from Somalia on the other and wee shona brown and her three kids across the landing,i made sure each kid on that landing always had a few Xmas pressies each year as i know how it can be for a young parent at that time of year,I'd go back in a heartbeat,where i am now you hardly get a nod from your neighbours,sad but true,

    Brilliant blink of an eye, thank you. I've always wanted to glimpse inside no 10. I guess not everyone can appreciate the subtlety of this clever video

    As is well known, the six remaining Red Road blocks were demolished on Sunday 11th October 2015. However, Red Road Court was one of the two blocks which failed to collapse as planned. The lower floors were demolished in the explosion but the upper half of the building dropped onto the wreckage, coming to rest at a slight angle. Given that the top half had dropped about 150 feet it remained remarkably intact and was still there a week later.

    I hate what they are doing to the glasgow skyline. Sure these blocks were past their sell by date but they are iconic and should have been redeveloped, same with the gallowgate blocks.

    I was a caretaker in the slab block opposite 28 years ago, the word at the time was because they were built of asbestos panels (ceilings, outer walls ,internal walls ) they would have to be taken down in the reverse order they were built and it would be too expensive. so they decided to add fire stairs to the slabs(if you were caught on a landing you had to go through a house to get to stairs ) and insulate/clad the single blocks,unless gha have a goldmine they may be there for a while yet !

      thetrashman1 Hi mate. Any idea where I can find floor plans for both the slabs and the towers?
      I keep hearing stories of emergency exits being found at the rear of each flat, only accessible via the front door, but I'm having trouble picturing the idea.

      Me as well. And it doesn't sound logical or sensible you have to knock on someone's door first in case of an emergency: suppose no one is at home on the landing, you are trapped then! And before you get to the back stairs you have to go through the house.....what kind of super architecture idea is that?!

    I worked for the post office when i was younger and occasionally i delivered to the flats. there were a few times when i had to chap a door and ask to use their backstairs to get down to the ground just because I'd "lost" the lift.

    Would have been perfect if the clock had been running in reverse (couting down) and the ending had been the lift going down-wards.

    Excellent video and I've grown up all my life with these blocks being in the skyline. I lived round the corner in petershill rd when I was a young kid.

  • @RapidAssistant

    I have grew up with them on the skyline all my life and it will be sad to see them go, that said I never had to live there!! They still look impressive from a distance, but it isn't until you get up close do you realise how badly run down they have become, and if nobody wants to live there anymore then it's time to let go.

    Funny the higher up you went the lower the ceiling was.. honestly..plus a hated when u felt it sway in big winds, and if anybody said they didn’t feel it they are full of shit..

    • @williamf4544
      @williamf4544 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe some folk get used to it - i remember visiting folk in a high rise and it was a windy day - i could feel it swaying but the person who lived there said he couldnt feel it - then again maybe they were full of shit like you say

    • @annemariecandyflip6531
      @annemariecandyflip6531 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I wouldn't like to live high up.....block swaying in the wind....that's too much for me

    • @thatcarguy6190
      @thatcarguy6190 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's true lol they were engineered that way intentionally for high wind pressure you can't have a solid block or it would risk breaking at some weak point over time so it has to be designed to "Flex" to overcome this..
      The higher you go the more you have this problem.
