When past interventions have not only failed but created more problems they must be addressed, but simply scrapping what was once considered necessary may not be the right prescription. Understanding the why behind past work on a 400 year old wood panel can be critical in deciding what to do about it said old work and how to move forward. Though it may seem straight forward and simple, looks can be deceiving and the project can in fact be a heady proposition.

I couldn't help and think of Phineas and Ferb, Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and all his "inator" inventions.
That's literally the name of the device. You can see it at some point in the video (when he lifts the clamping table to get underneath)
Peter Carioscia well he designed and build it, so he can name it 😂😂
When he built it there was a great debate and this is the name that remained. There is a great video where you can see step by step how he made it.
Me: Scared to even look at a 400 year old piece by a master wrong.

This guy makes a bonus living from making videos about his job that he's passionate about, meanwhile the videos also serve as a visual documentation on top of written documentation of what he did. It's amazing to think that he managed to pull it all off and garner such a big fanbase.
What's great too is that any future conservator who happens to work on the same painting in a far off future, can hopefully comeback to this video, and see exactly what he used and not have to guess the materials/ waste their time which methods to use!
That painting looks like me in the latter half of any Baumgartner video: Trying desperately to stay awake to learn more about art history and philosophy, but slowly losing the fight against Julian’s wonderfully soporific tone of voice.

I have a playlist so that I'll stay asleep once I conk out. I just wish he had the volume of his videos up so the adds didn't blast me awake. I could have my phone volume loud enough to hear him without becoming deaf when the adds kick in.

i'm liking the new conversational style of presenting/editing with the still camera at the start! it's like we're sitting in the studio and Julian is chatting to us.
I'm not: makes it more like a tv show, and I use TH-cam to avoid exactly that. Give me videos that concentrate on the job in hand rather than the presenter.

I feel spiritually aligned with Julian whenever he makes chamfered / bevelled edges, or neatly folds and tacks excess fabric on the back of paintings. It's just so satisfying.

‘Don’t let perfection be the enemy of good’. Sure wish I’d had this bit of wisdom many times in my life. I’ll bet things would have been finished either more quickly or indeed, finished at all. Thanks Julian, this is now my motto!
Like, I had to pause the video and think about it for a minute. I decided to write it down and read it as often as I need to. Being a perfectionist has it's bad sides... sometimes even a lot of them. Don't let perfection be the enemy of good, that's what I got to remember and I'll do my best to follow this advice every day.

I watched an episode of the 'UK Repair Shop' last week which involved someone bringing in an oil painting in need of restoration. My wife was surprised when I started pre-empting the process - cleaning before varnish removal, checking for overpainting, filing and so on. I had to fess-up eventually and say I've been watching Baumgartner videos all through the pandemic :)
You should do a "Day in the life of Baumgartner Restoration" video. A friend of mine watched one of your videos and said "of course he's good, he only works on on painting a week!". I'm thinking that's not true. Just so we get an idea of all you do in a day that's not normally in one of your restoration videos. Just a thought or idea. Great job Julian!!
He has a studio tour video where I think he talks about how he usually has several projects going at once. Restoration has a lot of dry time, so on any given day he'll have two paintings on suction, a few on the drying/flattening rack, a few getting clamped, a few in the humidifier, one on the retouching easel, a couple frame repairs, etc, etc.
Just doing the math - he says he’s been conserving about two decades and worked on thousands of paintings. Just taking the absolute minimums of 20 years and 2,000 paintings, thats 100 paintings a year or 2/week. And I’m pretty sure he’s done more than 2,000 so that number gets bumped up a LOT, plus that assumes he works every week (no vacation etc.)

It's so crazy that this was a common thing! The Speed Art Museum has a similar portrait- but the upper half. I do recall her gown being red, however, so likely not the missing part. You can only tell what it's supposed to be due to a tiny bit of hair peaking out at the bottom!
Yes, just looking through the Heidelberg University site someone else pointed out shows how many have been similarly mangled. If you don't like the actual subject of the painting, why on earth would you keep it at all? One even has a bunch of roses painted over John's head on the platter!

When I saw the tiny drill bit I actually went "aww", as if it was the cutest thing I'd seen all day and not just a thin piece of metal.
I have a pin drill for drilling holes for jewelry by hand, and the bits for that make his tiny one look huge. Some of the bits are so small that you can barely see the grooves in it. It's adorable.
During the beginning of the "space race" in the late 1950's, early 1960's. The Soviet Union was on top and sent tiny drill examples around the world. Bragging that they had developed and are using the smallest drills in the world. I think it was Finland or perhaps Sweden sent the Soviet drill back to them with a hole drilled through the shank.
Woodworker here, I didn't look away. I make Dados with just a blade all the time. For 2 dados, it's not worth it, for 50, setup the dado stack.
Also, Protip: Do the hole with the Forsner bit first, then the Dado. No blowout on the bottom :)

The fact that there is a label on the Clamping Table calling it "THE CLAMPINATOR" sends
In guitar restoration/repair we use suction cups to "pump" glue into smaller cracks that can't be accessed with a syringe, maybe something to consider for future repairs of a similar nature? I envy you the "clampinator"!! :-)

My favorite painting has a similar story! Herodias by Lucas Cranach the Younger is a painting of Herodias holding the severed head of John the Baptist but the canvas had been cut down to remove him. It was only after it was restored that they noticed the whisps of hair at the bottom of the frame. It’s at the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY.

Are you sure it's not Judith and Holofernes? As I remember, Salome didn't cut Saint John's head, she asked her uncle Herod for his head and got it, served on a platter.

“The Beheading of St.John the Baptist” by Caravaggio can be seen in the Oratory of the Co-Cathedral of St.John, In Valletta, Malta. It is truly spectacular.
This painting is gorgeous, but different than the one Julian is working on. That one was by Peter Gertner and the location of the top section is still unknown.

Do we dream about the possibility of Art-con or would meeting our beloved Baumgartner destroy our image of ... nah, of course not; he is exactly as he seems. Also, a room full of the highly diverse fans here would be fascinating and fun. 💕🐝

It's so cool to see how diverse the skills and knowledge you need to have. You'd think at first glance that you only need to know how to paint. But there is so much more to restoration beyond that.

I just realized why I love your way of just starting to talk to the camera while working: It's just like Reading Rainbow and Bill Nye the Science Guy. Bill Nye would casually talk to you while walking though his lab. LeVar would start talking directly to you as the theme song ended. I didn't realize it until now but, dude... You're giving me nostalgic feelings. 🥺
As a fellow woodworker don't worry about not using a dado blade stack, it is rare for most professional woodworkers to even use a dado stack just to make a single dado. It really only makes sense to use a dado blade if you are running parts in more of a production setup or are making very large dados. In the future if you set your table saw fence to be the stop for one side of your dado & the crosscut sled stop for the other side of the dado you can much more quickly nibble away the waste.

You put the hide glue where the floating horizontal battens will go when spreading the adhesive on the back of the painting at 23:30. There would be 5 spots where it will be glued. Not trying to be confrontational about it but I run a professional woodshop so I just noticed it and have done the same type of thing. I appreciate your videos and commitment to your craft! Thanks!

when you glued the panel for the cradle, you put glue on the spots where the free floating pieces go too...
Yeah that bothered me too. I thought glueing the perpendicular piece was a no-no, but then he just puts glue underneath?!

If he was just using the longer free-floating pieces for alignment and then *slid them out after clamping but before the glue set,* no damage done. He did say something about alignment but I guess we'll have to wait and see about the rest.
Because you're right, if he left them in place and those little swipes of excess glue (or squeeze out from the main battens) secured them in place, that would suck.
Yes, what was the point of only applying glue to the batons running with the grain when he had completely coated the area on the back of the painting? The perpendicular baton will be glued down in that area. Not free floating no more!

You put hide glue on the back of the painting, including where the horizontal free-floating battens touch and after clamp up it appears they were touching that section. I wonder if that will have any affect.
I saw that too. He stayed short of the edge on one side but not the other. Hope he addresses this in the next video.

I think he said in the making-of-the-table video that he had put pastewax or some other coating on the battens, which probably helps prevent the hide glue sticking! plus these are wood and replaceable / re-coatable

A little tip for when using the router, do the end grain first. That way if you get any tear out, it should get cut away when you do the long grain (side/face). Nice work though, as always!
I don't know how much fine furniture you've made, but that technique for the cradle is precisely the technique for making breadboard tables.
You can only glue in some places, and you must allow for the movement of the wood.
The video title deserves to be a heading to a play. And the beautiful restoration deserves a story of itself. 💚

This amazing Conservation video series is teaching me a lot. I am, right now, attaching some modern well made lace onto some cheap lace for fashion reasons. My approach now is so so careful, slow, patient and skill full. After watching Julian I am wiser and slower.

Another lovely video; I do have a teeny bit of doubt or question. The back of the painting is not flat, and the glue face of the battens are; when you clamp them, it looked a bit like they were exerting a fair amount of stress on the painting. Is that right?
