2002 BMW M3 SMG Review, Walkaround, Exhaust, Test Drive

  • A ten year old vehicle that will still put a smile on your face. BMW's fabulous M3 will no doubt, still be one sought after used vehicle on the market. It's jerky SMG transmission is it's only downfall, but we'd recommend finding one with the manual transmission anyways.

    A few of you are over reacting on his review. When I drove mine for the first time, it felt that way too. After about a month, it was totally different story. The 2002 M3 SMG still is a monster! I love it!!!

    • @TonyKimtheamusementparkfan
      @TonyKimtheamusementparkfan 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean I see why people think it sucks, because of how jerky it is, but I think this SMG transmission takes some time to get used to. I mean it is a manual that is automated, so just think of it as a normal manual, but it just feels weird not shifting yourself. The manual mode is definitely much smoother than the automatic mode, but again, it takes time to get used to. So it could go both ways.

    We mentioned it was a manual with an computer controlled clutch. It's also a single automated clutch as well. The new dual clutch automated manuals are much smoother compared to this earlier generation. Even when you adjust the bars in the transmission setting, it still shifts rather harshly. The first acceleration in the video was done in the "comfort" S1 setting. But yes, our mistake, this generation goes until 2006.

    M3 isn't just a souped up 3 series. The body is different, the engine is different... a lot of the things used on the 330 coupe doesn't fit the M3.
    I think SMG tranny just needs people to understand how to drive it, exactly like how a lamborghini e-drive, or the R8's rtronic.

    OK, so clearly this guy doesn't know anything about this car. Nothing about the transmission, the E46 M3 design or engine. Bad, bad, bad review. SMG stands for Sequential Manual Gearbox; the S-mode is for "Sequential" and A-mode is for "Automatic", as astounding as that may sound. The gear box also has 6 settings for the speed at which it will change gears. When you have it in A-mode it will default to setting 3 which is great for casual driving around town, but if you really push the car the shifts will seem too slow or jerky for that reason. In S-mode it will remember what you left it in last time and can change gears lightening fast in settings 5 and 6, though in 6 the DSC is switched off. Anyway, I can talk about this car for hours, whereas the reviewer struggled with just a few minutes. In summary, the car is epic! You just have to know something about the car, its for enthusiasts more than your casual driver who just wants to put their foot down in a fast car. Go buy a Nissan z350 or something....

    I think your getting lost with the SMG2 when its in A or S, I was the same when I purchased mine. Look closer. It's in A when the A is on, you appear to be looking at the S to the right but this just shows you what you can go to with the stick. When you press the paddles it turns A (automatic) off.

    this car is why were keeping our 2000 323Ci convertible in the family. straight six, top down, classic BMW styling. this can be said for alot of makers but Bmw's really arent like they used to be with the 3 series. kind of the 5 also.

  • @CellProcessor
    @CellProcessor 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's a matter of personal preference. The paddle shifters work very well for the track because it allows you to keep both of your hands on the wheel at all times. Another reason why you might have heard this is because BMW states that the SMG transmission shifts in 80 milliseconds. The average manual car driver shifts in about 500ms to 1s.

    I don't really understand why you are surprised that the shifting isn't smooth? It is a manual transmission with automated engagement. If you were driving a 6MT you would still be jerking around just as much during aggressive gear changes, only you wouldn't notice it because you would actually be doing the shifting yourself. SMG should not ever be compared to a typical torque-converter auto.

    Actually, the rear seats in the E46 M3 (I own one) is really good for a coupe. I am 6'5", and I have taken a road trip from San Diego, CA to Phoenix, AZ, with my sister in the passenger seat, and my two nephews in the back seats, aged at 25yrs, 11yrs, and 9yrs old, and it was just fine. I was pretty amazed at how comfortable we all were, and that I could take all of our luggage in the trunk just fine (we packed normally too, not lightly). I have also had my friend drive my car, and rode in the back, and I fit fine with the front seat forward a little, but the person in the passenger seat still had plenty of legroom up front. Also, the rear headroom is good too.

    No disrespect, I love youre reviews and everything( I personaly think that youre better than american top gear) but youre wrong about the transmision.The SMG is a more track purpuse transmision, it gives you a raw feel of the change, it doesn't care if youre uncomfortable, it just wants to get you fast to 60.I personaly prefer an unpluged manual. Nice videos btw and keep up the good work.Subscribed ;)

    Keep in mind that is also the cabriolet, which is much slower than the coupe version due to the weight difference. However, a 335i is as fast as the M3 coupe in a straight line, but the M3 was never about straight line performance alone.
    Take it around the track and there are not many cars that will be as fun or as fast to drive, especially with cars in the ~$20k price tag, which is what the E46 M3 is going for these days.

    The secret to driving the SMG is too drive exactly like a manual let go off the gas when shifting and blip the throttle when downshifting and don’t ride the clutch when waiting on a hill, it has the same transmission as the 6speed one expect the clutch and shifting is controlled by a computer hydraulic system

    Some of your information isn't correct, let me explain.
    The E46 M3 was actually made from 2001-2006. The E9X M3 began in 2008.
    And the reason why the SMG transmission seems "jerky" is because well, read it "Sequential MANUAL Gearbox" the the transmission is indeed a manual with a computer controlled clutch not an automatic. That's why you seem to find it jerky, you can't make a manual transmission smooth in between gears.
    If you wanted it smoother, adjust it using the bars under the shifter.

    I have a question.
    You say the transmission is horribly jerky, and I can see it is, but which one of the 5 shifting programs are you in?
    I can't imagine it's this jerky in the S1 program.
    S3 and up are ment for spirited driving shall we say. Driving it normally in those modes will result in horrible jerkyness because you're telling it you're gonna give it the beans and then you don't.
